Ebert's speech at 3:27 sounds like something that would be said to describe Robin William's the person, and not just the character he plays. He put up a wall with his words. "Don't look inside, I'm gonna keep you laughing the whole time".

In 2007, 20 years later I happened to see Robin Williams at the B.A.R.T. station in Oakland, Calif.. Robin was standing alone looking miserable. If I had known what he was going through I would have offered more help.

Kirby was excellent ("I know in my heart that I'm funny, sir"). So was Noble Willingham. And Forrest Tucker in a different role than any previous one. It was Williams' show, but other actors got some great lines. Except for Robert Wuhl, great character actors top to bottom.

Great movie thanks to Williams essentially doing his always funny stand-up type stuff, but sitting behind a radio mic. Some serious stuff in there, too: his little friend is with the Vietcong, the explosion at Jimmy's bar, the Army censoring the news, and the ironic use of "What a Wonderful World" over war footage. Awesome!

In the 90s I had the pleasure of briefly meeting Adrian Cronhaur. I was making a commercial and he happened to be visiting a recording engineer buddy from Vietnam. He was a lot more subdued than Robin Williams. All he'd say is the his shows were no where near as over the top but he and his pals still had a lot of fun on air. He seemed to be a genuinely decent fellow!

Great film! I'm a huge Barry Levinson fan. His fabulous film Tin Men (which came out earlier that year in 1987) is one of the most criminally underrated gems in film history! I really hope it gets a blu ray release eventually.

Good Morning Vietnam was entertaining on its own merit, and Robin Williams gave an awesome performance, one of his best. However, there were a number of historical inaccuracies. Adrian Cronauer himself said that if he'd done some of the things depicted in the film, "I'd still be in Leavenworth".

  • @BLAB-it5un

Fascinating to see these two supposedly movie review gods do such a colossally poor review of this film. They completely leave out the conflict that ultimately dooms the lead character. And neither of them mention the Lt. And I realize this was the 80's but it's cringeworthy that Siskel found it necessary to point out that one of the supporting characters was black. The observation about Cronauer not developing and being unemotional while true in an intentional way about comics and comedy fails to point out the very serious impact of the character being completely naive which ultimately undermines the safety of the soldiers and leads to the character's downfall from the lack of growth. And I realize this really was a break-through showcase for Williams' talent but the two reviewers seemed to get lost in gushing over Williams finally having a platform.

I never ever understood Robin William’s popularity. I don’t think he was brilliant, I think he was unbalanced. I worked with him at Paramount Pictures in the early 80s. I went out of my way to avoid him when I saw him approaching. He always thought he needed to entertain me instead of turning it off and just being a normal guy. It was always manic.
