Great analysis 🎉 I do think Jung's concepts of the anima and animus and The process of individuation are the topic of this song. I do have to say that in my opinion the anima and animus are those of The collective unconcious and not the personal unconcious. In this manner its about the theory of a Primal Unity, a Oneness ( as opposoed to duality) and the split of that Unity, a dispersion of a single conciousness into an incalculable amount of conciousness , individualities. So its about the return of humanity to the Great Uterus, the return of the individuated prodigal sons of God returning home. This schism is also represented in the prism for that Pink Floyd album. A single White light (God, Unity) is fragmented into many colors (humanity) as it passes through a mirror which multiplies apperances. Many cultures associate the prism or mirror with Choronzon, the demon of dispersion. Others say he is a magician who used a mirror to capture and humanity is the labyrith in which such God is trapped. So many references out there to this archetypical event. I just love this topic but don't wanna make this too long.
Nice video, love that album and great analysis, you're not just another pretty face - I just remember when Maynard chocked out a fan and still finished the song when he was appreocached and threatened on stage, what a boss
This one and "The Pot" have my favorite combinations of deep lyrics + amazing instrumentals. The Anima Animus relation is one of my favorite themes and to see how Tool provides a deep interpretation and enjoyment of a song is magnificent. Loved it, Nena ❤️
I completely agree agree! The thought and artistry behind Maynard’s lyrics are unparalleled. There is nothing I don’t like about this band lol! So glad you enjoyed the analysis, Matt! 😊🤘🏻
Great analysis as always ! I agree on the anima and animus interpretation (this is a topic I'll have to explore further) as it's the one that makes the most sense. Also as we've seen in Forty Six & 2, Jungian psychology is a topic that seems to be of interest in Tool's lyrics, which would seem to confirm that interpretation. Edit : I just watched the music video and according to that I'd go even a bit further and suspect that the song could cover both the internal split (between the animae and the self) and the communication and relationship issues the animae cause outside, both topics pretty intertwined and maybe suggesting that the external split can't be resolved without resolving the internal one.
Yes! Maynard seems to be very well versed in Jungian psychology 😊 Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, and I’m so glad you enjoyed the analysis, Denis! 🤘🏻🌀

I would like to hear your analysis of a hidden gem by Floyd...Childhoods End...the album is Obscured by Clouds released in 72 before DSOTM. Thanks Nena
Looking forward to hearing your theories on this one...do you think Jung's theory applies? What song would you like to see next?
