I've been a fan of Matti (and Peter) for a while so when I saw his video pop up, I had to make a little response really! These videos are never in defence of Resolve, nor are they a 'look at how smart I am'! But simply if someone like Matti has issues, then I'm sure others are too so I try to get some useful info packed into them to help folks out! Hopefully you enjoy it :)

If you use the EOS R with the Ninja V, set the output color to Rec/BT.2020 with any C-Log flavor, the HDMI standard doesn't include Canon Cinema Gamut color space. 2. If you use Adobe Premiere, enable the Legalize Toggle in the Ninja before recording, if you use Resolve, you can leave it off knowing that you are NOT seeing the levels as intended, and that in Resolve you'll have to set the levels to "full/data" on each imported clip. 3. The Canon provided lut for the recorded footage, using Rec/BT.2020 and C-Log (1) is "BT2020_CanonLog-to-BT709_WideDR_65_FF_Ver.2.0.cube", and in the case of the EOS R5 using C-Log 3 is "BT2020_CanonLog3-to-BT709_WideDR_65_FF_Ver.2.0.cube", unless is recorder internally either in HEVC or RAW, using Cinema Gamut, in that case is "CinemaGamut_CanonLog3-to-BT709_WideDR_65_FF_Ver.2.0.cube"… and in the case of recording RAW without LOG, thus having C-Log2 and Cinema Gamut: "CinemaGamut_CanonLog2-to-BT709_WideDR_65_FF_Ver.2.0.cube", that's all.

So many of your videos as well as others made by the community have made my editing work so much faster and easier. Also a lot of people who have tried making the switch are comparing Resolve to a product they've been using for 5-10 years or more. It takes time to get your skills and settings to a place that you're comfortable/happy with in my opinion.
@@_Caddac Yeaaah I'm always tweaking the setup tbh trying to get it just right and I change my mind often (hence why it looks different basically every video 😂) But I think i'm happy with it ATM! Shooting on the Lumix S5ii through HDMI to OBS! I do get some stuttering though (as seen in this video) but I've just installed a 2nd GPU solely to handle the OBS encoding so hopefully, that fixed the issues!
18:28 - Tip : You can also ALT/OPT-click the tracks to hide them (not disable them). This way they are still visible but the clips thumbnails won't show up. 👍
Disable tracks in the Color Page was what I was looking for, thanks a lot! Happen to me that I graded the Adjustment Clips instead of the individual clips and the adjustment clips are selected by default cause they are on top in the timeline
A lot of valuable tips in here. Please do more of these! :) Also there are some isssues with davinci that still make me hesitant about switching from premiere pro: 1. You can't change clip or audio speed while also changing the duration of said clip WITHOUT having ripple timeline checked. When having ripple timeline checked it will often times mess up other clips as well. Its super annoying especially if you need to use A LOT of sound effects and want to change their speed frequently. In premier you can change clip speed and duration easily without affecting other clips. 2. While retime controls are great (they act like the rate stretch tool in premiere), there's no such thing for audio clips. I know theres elastic waves in fairlight but i would muxh rather have retime controls for audio only clips in the edit page. 3.Why cant i keyframe the pitch? Ive read that u could in older versions but why did they remove it?? I hate premiere with a passion (and adobe lmao) so i will switch but i dont want to frequently think "damn would be less annoying to do in premier" :(
This is doing and creating actual content about DVR. You pick up a recent subject and video and worked around it very well. I did that in my head when I saw Matti complains (I don't agree in general) and try to find an answer to that problem, but you nailed perfectly and much better in term of sharing to the community.
All good points! But honestly, I put Resolve in the same category as PhotoShop. I spend more time watching tutorials than I do actually editing. Then using these programs just a few times a week makes it difficult to become efficient.
Love watching Matti and Peter and was beyond thrilled to see they were going to start using Rseolve. I love when you do these videos as I learn so much about Resolve!! Keep up the great work Alex!!
Your video is always the first I look for any doubt I may have. About Cut page, me too I would like to see some of the options moved to Edit. Especially the one that allow to change timeline resolution with one click.

I know you have lots of videos about DaVinci, but I was wondering if you can make an in-depth video demonstrating how you edit a video from start to finish. I’m new to DaVinci, and it seems like every video I watch - each creator glazes over an important detail, and I’m left confused. These “details” are probably intuitive and obvious, but for someone like me - I’m left confused lol. Essentially, if you had to teach a 5 year old how to use DaVinci, then how would that look? I think it would be awesome if you had the time to make a video like that. I really enjoy watching Cullen Kelly, but he typically focuses on color management and color science. I haven’t seen a tutorial of someone editing a video shot in log from start to finish while covering literally every click and button. Thanks!

Learning there are presets for the Deliver function after like 1.5 years of constantly forgetting to add subtitles or other stuff in there, is a new level of pain I didnt expect to exist, but thank you very much for adding this point to the video!

I made the switch to DR a couple of months ago and loving it, although, I gotta say, the only thing that I miss from PR is the scrubbing speed. Davinci it's just not there at least yet, it chugs even with 1080p footage even tho PR let's me scrub perfectly in my laptop even with 4k footage. If the BlackMagic team can *resolve* (pun intended) this issue, then DR will be unstopabble! Any tips on that subject @mralextech ? Only if they are not the usual tips of "just use optimized media" because let's be honest, optimized media is cool for long format media but for 10 mins YT videos ain't nobody have time to render optimized media every project.
The Fairlight templates look great for setting up multi-channel audio tracks from OBS game recordings (i.e. game audio, mic audio, discord chat, SFX, Music, etc). Thx for sharing.
Great video. I keep on forgetting about those damn power bins 😂 I do use the cut page as it’s more precise to cut frames when editing a talking head video other than that I find it really messy!
Props to you Alex. You're the reason i learnt about Davinci way back! As much i love Matti, I feel like his video was quite under researched, or maybe he got frustrated too quickly because he switched just a month or two ago 😂 he even changed the title from "5 reasons why you shouldn't switch to Davinci" to "Don't switch to Davinci", it's hilarious honestly😂 Anyways, i don't think NLE's should be a point of discussion, it's all about what works best for you and your workflow. I love these tips! Every time i find something frustrating, i then find out there's a pretty simple solution. It's just hard to keep them all in my head as a very part-time hobbyist.

Bravo! You're absolutely HAMMERING out tip after tip - BlackMagic should hire you as an unreasonably well paid, internal instructor ! :) In the specific the tip about color marking clips to easily grade them in the Color Timeline was new and very good information for me! One thing I personally struggle with, is keeping the node tree "tidy" - I've been trying to find out if there's some kind of way to align the nodes automatically, like a grid or something - if you know about that, it would definitely be a "tip request" from my side :)
Im new to using DVR, but have been watching tutorials for a few years now. They for sure have a grid that will lock the nodes in place to make them more tidy. I cant remember which youtuber it was, but the video was able "how to color grade using nodes". It was from either William Justice or Casey Faris, but Im sure Mr.AlexTech has one talking about it was well. I hope you are able to use this info to find what you need.

For the export custom settings - you can click the say, 'YT' setting, move back to 'custom' -> and all the settings will be there for your to modify (useful for not missing some odd ones).
@21:07 I personally do not like using Timeline nodes for grading …. Things can get sticky working with mixed media… I personally use groups and Pre/Post clip… Pre clip has my input CSTs and Post has Output CST and look nodes … it’s just as quick to save input and output powergrades for each type of source media and apply them appropriately . This will give you great starting point pretty darn quick.. I only use timeline for trims and global changes as absolutely required!!!
Resolves edit page needs some upgrades in my opinion. For example when you zoom into the timeline.. the increments get really jumpy at a point and it zooms in too fast. The auto align clips based on waveform isnt that great, would like to see a multicam ai alignment option.. something like what plural eyes does. And theres a few other things premiere's got as far as editing that davinci still hasn't implemented.
I'm on 18.5 Public Beta. I've tried to replicate your Bin-export to have the settings already in the new project (color management, timeline resolution, smart rendering and others). But so far with no success. I must be doing something wrong!
Timeline settings and project settings are two differnet things. If you need to save the Project Settings - use the project settings templates (tip number 1 in this video). Exporting Bins saves everything contained within the bin you export aka the timeline. When you create a new timeline, it can have different settings (frame rate, colour management, resolution etc etc) than the actual project settings.
Also... Did you know that the Auto Colour short cut (Cmd E?) actually works for multiple clips in the Edit Page! And Alt+Click on the Video track numbers in the colour page timeline to hide, note mute these layers from colour.

you are right that we cannot become like the LOONIX community, however it is true that while adding interesting new AI powered features, BMD DVR is becoming too complex and a bit cumbersome to work with - i hope they keep the focus on keeping things simple! this is another gold standard video example of a helpful yet enjoyable tutorial, thanks again! if anyone asks me about where to start from while learning BMD DVR, i will tell them to watch this video right after the rudimentary stuff!!! ❤❤🎉🎉
I absolutely love the cut page. I go through my video put everything in the timeline cut down to what I wanted in one go then move over to the edit page after the rough cut is done. A lot of that could be replace with better AI/translation tools that they are working on. But right now when I have tried to translate them edit from that I still have to go through and it doesn't save me all that much time compared to just opening the cut page and going through quickly. If I try to delete sections from translation then I have to go back extending clips because it cuts them and leaves to much or sometimes weirdly cuts like 2 seconds of audio.
This is likely going to take a lot of viewing before I get to understand it. Seems promising though. Very structured thinking process. Valuable hints. Thank you.

Question for you Alex, amazing video by the way! I watched 10min before I had to hop off but will watch the rest later. In DaVinci Studio, I have a project saved called TFA Template. In it, my bins exist, my audio effects are already applied, etc. Every time I start a new project I just click on that then save as and boom. So what would be the value of extracting the bins to a drb file you mentioned early on and same with saving a Fairlight global preset? Lastly, I run into color correction issues when importing a photo with a AdobeRGB color profile as opposed to sRGB. It just needs a hit of 10points of saturation and good to go. But any idea why it reacts that way when I import into project i.e., slightly under-saturated?
Heyyy Norman! They were quite vague. They weren't super specific gripes like CameraConsipiracies has done in the past, more general grievances so I figured i'd just go with a generally useful timesaving video instead :)
So if I'm using power bins and I add more clips to the folder on my computer, how do I update the bin in DR? I'm hoping there's an easy way to do this so if I add 20 or so more clips to the folder I can easily update the bin? I have a folder called " stock footage " on my laptop, I created a bin in DR and just copied the folder to that. Do I just need to drag the folder and copy it to the bin again? Edit - So I was inspired by your most recent video and decided to just play around and try it ( I'm always nervous I'll mess something up ) so I just dragged the folder and copied it again to the bin and it worked! It updated it! Please keep the videos coming, I really learn a lot from them/you.

Resolves edit page needs some upgrades in my opinion. For example when you zoom into the timeline.. the increments get really jumpy at a point and it zooms in too fast. The auto align clips based on waveform isnt that great, would like to see a multicam ai alignment option.. something like what plural eyes does. And theres a few other things premiere's got as far as editing that davinci still hasn't implemented.

I'm on 18.5 Public Beta. I've tried to replicate your Bin-export to have the settings already in the new project (color management, timeline resolution, smart rendering and others). But so far with no success. I must be doing something wrong!
Timeline settings and project settings are two differnet things. If you need to save the Project Settings - use the project settings templates (tip number 1 in this video). Exporting Bins saves everything contained within the bin you export aka the timeline. When you create a new timeline, it can have different settings (frame rate, colour management, resolution etc etc) than the actual project settings.

Also... Did you know that the Auto Colour short cut (Cmd E?) actually works for multiple clips in the Edit Page!
And Alt+Click on the Video track numbers in the colour page timeline to hide, note mute these layers from colour.

you are right that we cannot become like the LOONIX community, however it is true that while adding interesting new AI powered features, BMD DVR is becoming too complex and a bit cumbersome to work with - i hope they keep the focus on keeping things simple!

hi, i have a question for you Mr.ALEX do you use the reactor plugin for resolve and if so how do you use it
man the cut page saves me a lot of time just some i and o and my footage is ready now what's left is to put transitions subs colour grading export

I absolutely love the cut page. I go through my video put everything in the timeline cut down to what I wanted in one go then move over to the edit page after the rough cut is done.
A lot of that could be replace with better AI/translation tools that they are working on. But right now when I have tried to translate them edit from that I still have to go through and it doesn't save me all that much time compared to just opening the cut page and going through quickly. If I try to delete sections from translation then I have to go back extending clips because it cuts them and leaves to much or sometimes weirdly cuts like 2 seconds of audio.
This is likely going to take a lot of viewing before I get to understand it. Seems promising though. Very structured thinking process. Valuable hints. Thank you.

Question for you Alex, amazing video by the way! I watched 10min before I had to hop off but will watch the rest later. In DaVinci Studio, I have a project saved called TFA Template. In it, my bins exist, my audio effects are already applied, etc. Every time I start a new project I just click on that then save as and boom. So what would be the value of extracting the bins to a drb file you mentioned early on and same with saving a Fairlight global preset? Lastly, I run into color correction issues when importing a photo with a AdobeRGB color profile as opposed to sRGB. It just needs a hit of 10points of saturation and good to go. But any idea why it reacts that way when I import into project i.e., slightly under-saturated?

So if I'm using power bins and I add more clips to the folder on my computer, how do I update the bin in DR? I'm hoping there's an easy way to do this so if I add 20 or so more clips to the folder I can easily update the bin? I have a folder called " stock footage " on my laptop, I created a bin in DR and just copied the folder to that. Do I just need to drag the folder and copy it to the bin again?
Edit - So I was inspired by your most recent video and decided to just play around and try it ( I'm always nervous I'll mess something up ) so I just dragged the folder and copied it again to the bin and it worked! It updated it! Please keep the videos coming, I really learn a lot from them/you.

I tried the cut page. It made my video and audio out of sync. That could be because it is 18.5 beta. But still, I had to start over.
