West Germany should have won the 1988 European Cup. They were the best team in the tournament. Holland luckily beat them in the semi final.

WG were the best up to SF. But Holland were better on the night, remember USSR bt Holl in group. But lost in final. Holland improved, they grew in belief.

One thing that comes to mind is how 36 years on SPAIN have the best EURO record, in 1988 ITALY & GERMANY beat SPAIN.

@@Jose-sy1je I don't watch football nowadays but I remember when Germany declined over the course of the 90s. They hung onto their aging stars of this video for as long as they could (at France 98 they must have had one of the oldest squads in the tournament, several were over 30) and then, at Euro 2000, they reached their lowest point. They were absolutely dire, even worse than England who also had a terrible tournament. Germany stumbled in a boring fashion to the 2002 world cup final and it was only natural that they lost, but in 2006 it was a new team and a new era, they played arguably the best football of any team in the tournament. I had already largely lost interest in football by that point but the Germany of 2006 (and they continued to play impressive attacking football over the next few tournaments) thrilled me and had me watching earnestly once more (I am English and didn't bother watching most England games in 2006, to put my lack of passion in context :)). It seems that they steadily declined again. I remember reading somewhere a few months back that a long standing problem in Germany is seen to be the lack of great out-and-out strikers for the national team.
@@shervinbehrad1848 Yep, Spain always used to be - along with Holland - the extremely talented European nation with decades of club success who nevertheless failed to do particularly well in tournaments, a pattern that continued until the late 2000s.
