I had someone come into the studio with a G&L 5 string bass not too long ago. It went straight to the top of my list of instruments to acquire for the studio. It sounded amazing and played amazing (I am a bass player as well, and he let me play it for a bit).

G&L's quality is unmatched. I believe they Plek all their USA instruments. I own 2 and they are superb instruments.

They don’t anymore just the custom shop. But I bought a v12 anyway because it’s awesome.

The MFD Humbuckers are no joke. If Gibson or Fender had them in their guitars, they would be much more desired in the humbucker space. Its amazing the clarity, grit and depth they have, its like everything we love about P90s, Fender Single coil and humbuckers put into one pickup. Love seeing G&L getting love.

Dude, nailed it with the "Do I look awkward holding this guitar?" comment! It seems like a trivial thing but one's self confidence is everything when you're trying to be deliberate and intentional with every note you play!

Got my CLF Research Doheny V12 in burst back in January of 2019.
I agree with your impressions of the guitar. That trem is super stable and very accurate.
Unlike a lot of the guitars out there this one reaches double digit possible combinations of sounds.
The V12 pickups were adapted from one of Leo's early designs.
I still have a photo of Leo's original pickup concept wired to a test board with an accompanying piece of masking tape and the handwritten words ":Series Single Parallel".
Great review. You're right, no need to modify this one.

As a Fullerton Doheny owner and someone who would love one of the v12 variants I appreciated this video.
Was the packing foam in the back so the vibrato springs don't make noise? Not sure what the point of it is so just curious.
Also just so ya know Leo Fender passed away in 92 i believe, on my birthday actually march 21 so he wasn't exactly around when they started the doheny guitar, george fullerton wasn't either for that matter, but the doheny IS based on all of fullerton and leo's previous concepts.
The JUMBO jazzmaster MFD pickups are essentially just larger asat special jumbo mfd's.
The V12's pickups are likely based on the mfd humbuckers from the f100 and superhawk I think iirc.
I also wanted a musicman really bad when I remembered g&l and went down that rabbit hole.
The bridges on both of those brands are fantastic, but I like the look and feel of the g&l one more, even though the music man bridges look rad too.

Yep I have a few g&l guitars and bass guitars my favorite is my offset doheny I have fender telecaster deluxe and a few ibanez bass guitars and a few ibanez acoustic and electric guitars it depends on the music you want to play style and feel as to which guitar you use for that song or album 😊

I also have a G&L CLF Research Doheney. I love that guitar. I got a longer trem arm that sits lower and doesn't have the cheap plastic end. Got it used from Sweetwater, and they even had photos of the actual guitar and the actual weight, so I was able to choose what I wanted. I love the pickups! I usually just use single coil or humbucker on the bridge. One thing that is weird though is that though it has the same scale length as my Strat and Tele, it feels harder to do bends on. It feels like the neck in longer, but it must be the same length right? Anyway, my fingers get tired a little easier, but otherwise this is my main guitar these days. For live work I need to be able to switch between single coil and humbucker and also have a trem arm. That being said, I think I like my Tele better in the studio. Still, the Dohene gets plenty of use there too. Cheers!

      Which trem did you get??
And yes the longer I play it I agree with your take. It’s become my 75% guitar. But for very specific things I switch. It is a beefier neck than I typically like. But I find the shape comfortable

@@RecordingStudioLoser I wrote G&L inquiring if another arm they sold was compatible (Vibrato Arm - G&L Dual Fulcrum (current USA and all Tribute Series) with the Dohene, and they actually sent me one for free, with a replacement socket that is needed for the alternate trem arm. Ground hum was getting through when I was holding the original arm's plastic tip. They may do the same thing for you of you inquire if the arm I listed works, and maybe complain about the same grounding issue. They also sent me some new tips for the coil switches, as a couple times those split on me. I found their customer service to be friendly and responsive, which is very valuable to us consumers.

The tension is the magic! I found it harder to play a first but now I don’t like my tele as much feels dead compared to the v12. Can’t wait till I get even more comfortable on it.

I had been playing Gibsons ES 330 and LP jr for years when a band I was in asked me to play about a '62 Telecaster. I remember feeling insulted. It was my first exposure to HAVING to play a Fender product. I loved that butterscotch wonder and own one and a Strat today.

the resonance of the strings and springs is half the sound of a JM style guitar to me. It's the reason the G&l have never worked as much as a Fender style JM trem, none of that behind the string ring you get from the Fender. I always kinda thought the G&L was more of a JM for people who really want a Strat. They sound too controlled for me, but I play weird music.

Jazzmasters are amazing and since I just decided to never buy any guitars from fender/gibson I can't wait to buy my Doheny Deluxe or CLF V12.. i'm split... I do love those MFD Singles but the Humbuckers sound so nice also plus no 60 cycle hum...

I've got 3 G&L tributes and love them. The build quality is insane for the price and they just play great. My ONLY complaint with them is the necks just don't feel as comfortable and natural as fender necks. If I could have a G&L legacy with a fender shape neck, that would be perfection.
Also, I REALLY wish they made a Doheny with the Mastery trem. I know, its not everyone's cup of tea and I love the DFV on my legacy, but when I pick up a jazzmaster I want that mastery goodness. Lol

    • @RecordingStudioLoser
      @RecordingStudioLoser  ปีที่แล้ว +1

The neck took me a minute. But having played it when I go back to a fender neck it feels off.
I like the hand stability on the G&L
