    Drop down out of sight behind some rocks and kelp, then build up speed and ZOOM right along the sandy bottom about 6 meters from them with a barrelroll so i got a good look at big eyes in oversized masks . . . HILARIOUS !!

    • @kaeolandon-lane3429
      @kaeolandon-lane3429  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Preventing decompression sickness is all about how fast you’re ascending to the surface. The longer and deeper you’ve been under, the slower your ascent should be, or the more safety stops you should do.
      Freedivers don’t need to do safety stops or worry about decompression sickness unless in special circumstances. We don’t stay down long enough to get a significant build up of dissolved gases, so we can go up and down as we please.

    • @kaeolandon-lane3429
      @kaeolandon-lane3429  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Take a freediving course is what I would recommend for extended breath hold! You'll learn everything you need and want to know, I wish I took one way sooner than I did.
      Otherwise google "carbon dioxide (CO2) tables freediving". I trained almost exclusively with CO2 tables and got my breath hold from 2:00 to 5:30 in a few months when I was 14 years old. You just hold your breath in your bed. Easy.
      It would've been a bit deeper than 10m, so you're spot on with 40ft.
      Good luck man!

      mammals have something called a dive reflex or dive response that makes us more efficient holding our breaths underwater. its how dolphins, sea lions, freedivers, etc. are able to hold their breaths for long periods underwater. look it up on google if youre interested in knowing what exactly activates the response and what changes happen in the body when we hold our breath underwater

      It is recommended to have a recovery period of 3 times your breathhold. Realistically, spearfishers don't do this if there is something that they are hunting, because it's not a controlled activity like freediving on a line.
      The ability to do it cheap is one of the reasons why I love freediving!

    • @kaeolandon-lane3429
      @kaeolandon-lane3429  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your comment is very important. I don't want to advocate diving alone.
      Here is my excuse:
      Where I lived I was the only freediver. There were some spearfishers and plenty of scuba divers, but they didn't have the passion for freediving that I do. I would go out with the spearfishers sometimes, and I would take out people just freediving every chance I could get, but there was often no one around to actually go diving with and definitely no one who I could take to the places I wanted to explore. So I would often go diving by myself. Which is incredibly dangerous! I have had moments which would have been scary by myself and ended up embarrassing instead because there were buddies there that were watching me.
      I teach all my students to never dive alone. Looking back on it now, I can't see myself having another choice apart from avoiding freediving entirely- something which I would never end up doing because it's like breathing to me.
      As an instructor now, I'm teaching safe freediving practises, training people to be better and building and connecting a community of people on my island that can go diving with each other. I know how frustrating it is to be limited constantly by who you can go diving with or risking your life diving alone. But there will always be people who will prefer to risk their lives- it's an ongoing challenge.

    Can someone explain to me how you guys manage to last so long without breathing?
    Once it happened to me that without realizing it I was diving for several minutes. I surprised myself. I have not been able to get into that "state" again...
    Does anyone know why this happens

    • @kaeolandon-lane3429
      @kaeolandon-lane3429  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Freediving can get you in to a state of flow. Flow state happens in many sports- you stop thinking and just do. It feels fantastic. That could be what happened, and you lost track of time. To add to that, the mammalian diving reflex could have altered your blood flow, hormones and consciousness.
      To get back into it, try some "blind line dives". Take a freediving course. Ask your instructor to help you with this. Pull yourself down the line with your eyes closed, occasionally checking to see if you're going to hit the bottom/go too deep. On the way back up, pull yourself up the line keeping your eyes closed the entire time. With your eyes closed, you're focussing on what is happening within you. It should recreate something like the experience you had- that's the feeling I get every time I do line freedives.

      Sounds like you may have experienced a degree of MDR (mammalian dive reflex), all mammals share it, although it usually takes time to develop a good one. If you are unable to experience it again, that's probably because you are anticipating it, which activates your brain with excitement, which in turn burns more O2. The brain is the biggest oxygen consumer.
      The best thing you can do is take the freediving course. Aside from that, you need to be very comfortable in the water, relax, don't make any unnecessary movements (muscles burns O2), try to enter a dreamy state, and try to not think much about anything, just pay attention to what's going on around you at the moment.
      Oh, and the two things that will eventually kill you are freediving alone & hyperventilation before the dive. So, stay safe and have fun :)

    So what I'm wondering watching freediver vids, how do they resurface so fast without getting 'the bends'? Is that something you worry about if you only go REALLY deep? Just curious.

    • @ghostface1066
      @ghostface1066 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main reason for the bends would be breathing compressed air at depth so scuba divers have more of an issue with this than freedivers. Granted, the deeper that freedivers go, the greater their chances of getting the bends sooo...

    • @Ilanawolf12
      @Ilanawolf12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ghostface1066 no there's no way for a free diver to get the bends. It's caused by too much nitrogen in your blood so if you take a breath at the surface you're only using that air during your dive.

    • @OvayBrandao
      @OvayBrandao 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ghostface1066 freedivers dont worry about the bends. It regards solely scuba divers.
      I hope this makes it easier for you to understand how it works:
      * you're breathing in compressed air in compressed lungs at a depth below 40 meters. You can't surface too soon because as you get closer to the surface, pressure drops, therefore your lungs decompress, but so is the air inside them. Therefore, you end up having way too much air for your lungs capacity as you resurface.
      ** free divers don't get the bends because they dive using one breath, which means the air amount in their lungs is the same no matter how deep they go.

    • @ghostface1066
      @ghostface1066 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OvayBrandao the lung expansion injuries aren't what I was referring to. I was talking about the dissolved gases bubbling out of the blood/tissue systems. Free divers that go very deep on repetitive dives with very short surface intervals can get gas bubbles in the blood stream. edit: I mean an excessive amount bubbles, since every diver will have some bubbles, but most of them aren't a problem.

    • @OvayBrandao
      @OvayBrandao 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ghostface1066 that's very rare. It'd have to be big depths and a lot of time spent underwater with really short surface intervals. Thank you for clearing that out though ! The guy asked on how come free divers don't need decompression stops on their way to the surface without getting dcs.

      Spent some time finding (and fixing) a stick, the right width and with a curve in it. When you hold it at the handle, it sits nicely and makes everything wobble less. You can also drop it and it sinks with the camera facing up and spinning slowly.
      Not nearly as good as a gimbal, but way better than a mask cam.

    • @kaeolandon-lane3429
      @kaeolandon-lane3429  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found a really good stick that curved in such a way that when I held it at the base it would always stay upright without me having to grip it tightly. It also spun nicely when I let it go as it sunk. Having it on a stick made it way more stable, and consciously thinking about keeping it steady. Otherwise buy a gimbal, but they're expensive.
      Have a look at the Hawai'i videos I made, I didn't have a stick then. I used a mask mount instead and it wasn't nearly as clear.
