    Number 4 happens all the time if you're working professionally. People think their mask is broken, their reg is broken, their tank is leaking etc etc, then panic when nothing is really wrong. Ive had some one girl swim over to me and grab the reg out of my mouth because she thought hers was broken (It wasn't), I had someone pull my mask off in a panic and bolt. There is no rational sometimes and the best thing to do is learn to recognise panic in others before it boils over and reassure them.

      @@elmo319 In theory, that would be the case. But in practice, you can tell a student what to do over and over again on the surface, then they get stressed or panicked and everything you've taught them goes out the window. Im sure they did go through and practice mask clearing before they went open water diving.

      @@elmo319 You’re well within your right to disagree. I think she knew to breath out through her nose but struggled to clear the mask in one exhale. You could see him telling her it was only partially clear. He was telling her to repeat the skill to clear the rest of it. She obviously just wasn’t happy yet having a flooded mask. Happens all the time with new divers and isn’t anyone’s fault.

      @@elmo319 You clearly have no idea how stress/panic hits a person and how all the rational thinking goes in the trash with it.
      If you need to remember things you've learned just a while ago and don't necessarily have any real experience with it, you won't remember those things when in panic unless you're just the kind of person who can remain calm.

      Instructor in 4 did not handle it well, poor instruction on how to clear a mask. No nose touch only pointing at goggles, throwing up stop signs when someone has a mask full of water and they cannot see you.

  • @karinahertz8631
    @karinahertz8631 3 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    The mask clearing skill is the trickiest one for new divers and the most likely to trigger panic. You can’t see, and water getting into your nostrils is not only uncomfortable but to some it mimics the sensation of drowning since we typically breathe through our noses. Having water flood them is an unnatural feeling at best. All you need to focus on is that you can breathe despite everything. Keep focused on the fact that you can breathe in and out of your mouth. This will help you keep calm by reassuring you that you’re not in danger and even if you fail to clear your mask the first time you will get there if you can keep panic at bay.

      The biggest problem is they blow out their mouth not their nose when trying to clear the mask. I carry a slate so I can clearly communicate with a new diver

    4 and 5 is the only ones you need to see to get an idea of a real world panic. The instructor in 4 did a really good job. 5 could have been prevented by the dive leader in my opinion. The person was in a sub panic before being told they are going up and never got the news that they are going up. This could have made her panic worse due to not seeing the dive leader.

    Number 4 reminds me a lot of my first attempts.... 🙈 I exhaled through my mouth instead of my nose to clean the mask, and then I choked on the water and stomped to the surface every time because I had to cough. If someone had told me before that you can just cough into the regulator, this probably wouldn't have happened…
    It took many dives before I was able to look at these practice diving platforms without fear. I always layed down on it and waited until I calmed down. Now, after two years, I had my 100th dive and I'm happy. 😇

      yea the 4th one made me feel bad. While training, i did mask clearing over and over in the pool, but my open water was in a cold quarry. It was very different. it was like i couldn't make my nose exhale. my instructor let me come to surface though when the panic set in after a few failed attempts. i am so grateful for that. i know the instructor in the video is doing a good job by keeping her down- its realistic training. but being that new and that scared... i would've punched him and fled lol
      and yes, i went back to the pool for a few days 😂

    ive swam since I was a kid so thats probably why, but I dont understand why the mask filling with water causes panic. I had mine fill all the way up all the time in the pool, you just cant see but its got nothing to do with your breathing you just either clear it or say dah well and go back up. When air is cutoff and you are not on an inhale, that makes more sense to me. I guess some people arent able to handle water on the eyes.

    First: Why is the student in this situation in the first place ? Because he did not receive proper briefing - instructor crap.
    Second: doesn’t he sees that student is blowing air from his mouth to clear his mask instead of his nose ?
    Third: does the instructor believe student can actually see his signs with a mask full of water ??
