    • @TheNotLostNomad
      @TheNotLostNomad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Santa Elena is really cool! We rented kayaks and paddled up river past the bend a few years ago. This park is such a treat with it being so far out of the way...somehow the extra effort to reach the parks makes it that much more special!

    Wow. My wife and I were there just 4 days before you guys. We actually did Long Meadows - SR - ER route. It took lot longer than your route. However, we did not want to carry 30lbs through Pinnacle trail. We added Emory Peak on the way back which was our mistake. I forgot to bring water filter and ran out of water right after Emory Peak. We barely made down while dehydrated. The view of sunrise and sunset at SR/ER are amazing. We are planning to make another return trip. We camped at EC2 and BC4. We also added Lost Maples and St Elena on 3rd day. Lost Maples was very good 1 day hike trip. We ran into many black bears (4) as well. I also saw glimpse of a cougar near JC trail which I thought was a cat. it looked lot smaller from 50 yards or so. lol

    • @TheNotLostNomad
      @TheNotLostNomad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      wow, that's crazy! It sounds like you guys had an amazing trip. And it's funny that you guys ran out of water after Emory because I did the very same thing a few years ago. Nothing worse than dehydrating yourself on a tough dry trail. Glad you made it out fine...And how cool that you guys saw so much wildlife. It's a real treat...most of the time I don't see a thing! thanks for watching

    Many years ago a buddy and I did multi-day hike from the opposite direction. When we came to the Emory Peak trail we couldn’t find the bear boxes. Being young and dumb, we just took our whole packs with us to the top. On the way back down we found them as soon as we made the turn to the main trail. Every time I see that trail head I remember hauling our way-too-heavy packs up that mile.

      Thank you! I have never been during April before...but I’ll be there at the end of April this year. So expect cool temperatures at night but hot during the day...Big Bend weather is funny...the temps could read mid 60s but feel like 90 degrees when you are hiking in the sun. So expect heat but bring something to keep you warm when the temp drops after the sun goes down. Enjoy your trip!

    Starting from the basin -
    Laguna Medows Trail, Colina Trail, South -West Rim Trail, Boot Canyon Trail then Pinacles Trail & come Chiosos Bsin. This way the Pinacles Trail will be down hill. This will be about 12-mile loop

      Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! Big Bend is one of my favorite parks!
      As for direction, I’ve done both and I really prefer going at it clockwise. To me the views are more interesting and you can enjoy them while you are fresh on the trail. I also prefer climbing the steeper trails and going down on the more gradual side...tends to be easier on my knees. The Laguna side is great but to me the other side is much more interesting.

      And as for my camera, I use a GoPro Hero 5 Black with a gimbal for stabilization. I keep my videos set at the linear setting to avoid the the wide angle look...linear is closer to a traditional camera view.

    • @TheNotLostNomad
      @TheNotLostNomad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! You'll love this hike! The first two times I went were both in February. The weather is great during the day but it gets pretty cold at night. And with that cold you probably won't see any bears. If you do just give them their space and get loud and big if they start coming towards you..most likely they will just be annoyed that you are there and leave. Enjoy your trip!

    May I ask when this was? We're going first week of December, trying to get an idea for our weather

    • @TheNotLostNomad
      @TheNotLostNomad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This trip was in late October...for December it can be hard to tell what the weather will do. It could be warm and sunny or you could have snow...it’s really hard to judge. Typically the weather reports will report accurate temperatures for the lower desert by Panther Junction, but it v I’ll be 20 degrees cooler up in the mountains.
      We had the opposite on this trip...temperatures were in the mid 40s at the top and 27 degrees by the time we made it down to the bottom.
      I’d say just watch the weather and have a backup plan to stay in the warmer lower desert if it gets dicey up top. Hope that helps!

    I'm a senior citizen planning my first hike in BB. Is there anyway to get to the South Rim view without hiking over 5 miles? I want to see the view but not sure I can hike 10 miles upward.

    • @TheNotLostNomad
      @TheNotLostNomad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately there isn’t any other way to get to the South Rim...it takes some work to get all the way up there. I’d probably suggest the Lost Mine Trail. It’s about 5 miles and is pretty mild. The views will give you a taste of what the south rim is like. Enjoy your trip!

    How long did you wait for the bear to leave the tree? How did you get by ? Do you carry bear spray? Enjoyed.

    • @TheNotLostNomad
      @TheNotLostNomad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! So we just left the bears alone...had lunch in the shade by the rim. We maybe waited about 45 minutes maybe.
      We didn’t carry bear spray...I’ve been to Big Bend many times and this is the first time I’ve seen bears. Even so, I don’t think I’ll carry bear spray...although adrenaline gets high when you see the bears they really haven’t caused any issues in Big Bend....just give them their distance if you see them and you’ll be fine.
