Hurricane Dorian batters Bahamas with severe flash floods and ferocious wind

- The storm has stalled over the Bahamas, lashing the islands with wind, rain and storm surges, and killing at least five people. Thousands of homes were inundated with floodwater as rescue operations tried to reach stranded residents, many trapped on roofs. Dorian has now weakened to a category-2 hurricane but expanded in size as it heads towards the US.

And thus we start to see it. We all knew this will be terrifying. Because days have passed without hardly any footage getting out while having the eye-wall of a cat 5 hurricane staying put. Just making sure that the small islands having sustained 150 mph winds (and storm-surge and torrential down-pour) from northerly to easterly to southerly directions.

I live 20 miles north of Palm Beach on the coast and we braced as much as we could. A lot of people left and we got seriously lucky Dorian didn’t hit us here in Florida. I’m thinking of quiting my job and dropping everything to go over to our neighbors that need help

Don't worry we also experienced a strong cat 5 in the phillipines it was Yolanda it did lots of destruction and there was 6000 people dead I think and around 1 million homes destroyed

Heartbreaking. Praying for all who are effected by Hurricane Dorian. Me, I don't know how to swim so I am terrified of large bodies of water. Don't think I could ever live close to a river, lake, pond or ocean. This is exactly what I am terrified of.
Lots of prayers to everyone effected by Hurricane Dorian. It’s making its way to Nova Scotia, PEI, Newfoundland and New Brunswick, where I live, so I’m feeling quite nervous. Lots of praying.

I'm from Long Island Bah. which is next to Exuma. Exuma probably got rain, like most of the central Bahamas, but nothing major. Dorian hit the islands in the North. I appreciate you thinking of us.

Also, it should go like this. The Feds build you a new house ONCE. If it happens again, and you are still there, it should suck to be you. But the feds just keep rebuilding and rebuilding.

That’s storm surge, not “flash floods”. The highest point on the island is only about ten feet above sea level, while the ocean rose 25 ft over normal sea level with the storm surge. Please report accurately.

I was apart of this tragic hurricane and my hometown abaco is now destroyed I hadn't slept overnight I stayed up cause I was terrified

They are going to have to be thinking about sea level rise when they rebuild. The airport is only eight feet above sea and things won't get any better.
You'd think, wouldn't you? Yet in one of the mainland US' States on the Eastern Seaboard that suffers from such storm, loss of land and rising sea levels they have banned legislators from even referencing official scientific data detailing the probable future issues. Kind of reminds me of the attitude of the Mayor in the film "Jaws" - just ignore the very real threat and pretend it doesn't exist... right up to the moment when denial is no longer an option!
And there are record level storm surges because... rising sea levels. But climate change deniers gonna climate change deny I guess...
This hurts my heart. This had me in tears when it happened and it still does.

Jason Alexander Or you could just do some research on weather. The wind patterns collapsed, which meant that no winds were around to carry away the hurricane. So it sat there for a day waiting for a wind pattern to pick it up. This isn’t that unusual. Happens a lot out in the open ocean. This time it happened over the Bahamas. Not very surprising.

Just hurts me knowing that so many families have been ripped from their foundations. Once I can get $$ in the bank or am able to go to the store,I am planning on helping somehow. Anything I can send to the Bahamas will be used gratefully.
When tphoon Haiyan striked us in the Philippines most of people survived from the floods by going up to trussess for those who only have one story houses. There were some who were holding each other's hand eventually let go the other person just to avoid from being carried away both by flood. The teenage daughter died, the mother didn't have any choice. This video reminds me how scary typhoon Haiyan was. Lucky these people survived with the help of that guy.
