The problem with parting with your collection is that it won’t make a dent in your life costs. Maybe it could solve a minor problem one time. Then you’re back where you started with the same problems but no collection.
I have a rule where I don't spend money on videogames unless I have at least 2k in savings. Nothing wrong with spoiling yourself, but make sure that you're taken care of first
@@johndiggle4229 Did you ever take a moment to analyze when I said "at least", or are you too pompous and smug to be amused by such simplistic words? It's not a competition by any means. If it was, I wouldn't be trying to compete with you or any one who wasted their time bashing others in TH-cam comments for self gratification
@@excaliburnorth446 wasn't trying to insult! Just have 4 kids and am 49 years old so $2000 and I would be scared 😂😂😂 all apologies seriously sorry if that came out wrong.
@@johndiggle4229 I'm sorry if my response seemed crash. I am only in my 20s and have no kids, but I can understand that your situation is completely different. That's actually great to hear tbh. Family comes first and providing for them should always be the main priority. I hope to be in the same mindset when I have children and a wife 👍🏻
I’m not in the resell or collection market. I exclusively buy my personal favorite games and physical media. I take a minimalist approach to buying media and games. I only want things I’ll actually play and watch, no dust collecting. Yes times are very hard, I’ve never seen these struggles and cost of living in my lifetime.(I’m in my 30s)
You should know you are in a unique and blessed situation. My local Gamestop does not give any games away for free if it’s a game that’s not in their system. They do not take it in and if it’s a game that’s in their system and comes off a trade hold they just put it on the shelf with whatever the price the system says to me it’s unusual in the area. I’m in for Gamestop to give anything away for freeso that is a blessing for you.
I sold parts of my collection (ps1 and ps2) when I went through a minimalist phase. I came to the realization I would never play these old games again, so why was I holding onto them? Just out of sentimental values wasn't enough reason to carry these baggage through life. But I started collecting again to archive against the age of digital and censorship.
We are deciding which bills to pay, it's crazy whats happening. Bay Area, $3k for 2 b3droom. None of mh neighbors bring home a shopping cart full of food anymore, its 2-3 bags. Disgusting
A topic that often gets overlooked is the idea of relocating to a more affordable area without having to part with your games. Many folks prefer living in densely populated places for the sake of convenience, but as costs keep rising, it might be smarter to consider moving to less crowded, more budget-friendly spots. High population density often correlates with increased crime and unrest. Plus, when the next pandemic rolls around, you'll be glad to be away from the strict lockdowns that big cities impose.
Easier said than done. Relocation are expensive, especially when you’re barely hanging on now. Also you must have work lined up where your moving. Plausible for some, unlikely for the majority.
Basically what you’re saying is to solve the underlying problem instead of selling off your collection for a pittance. Retro gaming isn’t cheap, but very few people actually have enough of a collection to actually make a dent in living costs.
That’s why I stick to one console. I wish I can afford to collect for all the consoles out there but it becomes way to much. I have my switch library and just sticking with that.
1. my car needs repairs 2. dental work debt 3. looking for work 4. behind on rent currently 5. funeral cost I would have to pretty much sell almost everything I own to get my car fixed. - Which is already a pain to do when you need money fast.
I went to a local one last week and asked if they had any original xbox game, a lady had just brought in about 20 they couldn't buy but she donated and they gave to me :)
I walked into a GameStop like 2 years ago and asked if they had any Xbox 360 games and the lady pulled out about 15 games from behind the counter and gave them to me for free
Yes the cost of living is up but there are tons of factors that come into play. The average person lives above their means. People go out to Dunkin and Starbucks instead of making coffee at home. People eat out at restaurants instead of packing a meal or cooking at home. People overspend on clothes, shoes, etc. instead of looking for the non “name brand”. Then you have people who overpay on games and their hobbies. People who prioritize them over basic life choices. I have always had budgets and goals when I collect. I am not rich by any means but I value my hobby as something I will continue as I make choices in other areas of life. If I didn’t own certain things (house/car) and if I couldn’t pay my bills I wouldn’t buy videogames. There are tons of things that impact how a person spends their money and on what. If most people broke down their spending and earnings they could see what they choose as a “luxury”. What they prioritize. Always interesting to hear what people think about collections and selling them.
I really appreciate the pragmatism you bring to your videos. Learning to become content with your living situation is the key to establishing a healthy foundation. Thanks for the video!
I can tell recently buying games on ebay or mecari how slashed prices for games are even brand new. It shows that people need money really fast now. Or how a seller will offer a discount more frequently on ebay
I live in Westchester and rent is just as bad. No difference whatsoever unless you go WAY up in Westchester where it starts to transition into upstate. And even then, it's a mixed bag. Any place that connects you to NYC via Metro North is going to be a kick-in-the-dick rent wise.
I'm actually going through my collection now and selling off stuff i don't play or can do with out till I can afford it again down the line. Life is so expensive and my wife can't work for 3-4 months but I hope after that it won't be as hard but till then the games gotta go.
Y2K have you heard of the 2K cover athlete curse? Seems like Allen Iverson managed to avoid it, but recent athletes seem to always get injured or have something bad happen to them after the game's release with them on the cover. Also that water bill is insane. Even with saving it feels impossible for younger folk to buy a house today and still have savings and money to cover other bills and potential damages to the home like plumbing even when you are at some of these high paying jobs. Most of my friends who have high paying jobs are still stuck in apartments.
I spoke to chris ( retro smash tv) about his water bill. It would seem from he told me that his water bill is only that high due to a leak that is beyond his control. I've told him to seek legal advice before he ever pays a penny to the water company.
It's funny I woke up this morning and decided that I was going to sell my PS3 collection among other things then this video popped up. I have a credit card that I should be able to get paid off if I sell it so I'd rather get that done. I'm trying to look at it like these things will come back to me eventually once I'm in a better space financially but it's hard to part with a collection you spent so much time building.
I don't think your UK friend did the right thing here. There are better options for that utility bill or any bill. For example, if you took out a loan for say $5,000. Depending upon the length of that loan to payoff and the interest rate assigned to it, the monthly bill to pay off that loan may be less than paying a ridiculously large utility bill. Unless.... I am understanding things wrong here and that utility bill was not a monthly bill but a quarterly or longer bill. Then maybe there is no advantage to a loan versus paying the bill...
I'm in MA. The average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment here is over $2k. I'm a manager of a warehouse and I can't afford that. At least not while also having car payments. Yes, I still buy games and maybe should cut back, but they are my get away from the pain of the world we live in. As they are for most people, I imagine. Going into 2025, I worry how much worse the housing market in the US will get. New housing costs are about to skyrocket.
Recently I lost quite a big amount of money due to some crypto scams but it was not all of my money at least, I have enough to still get buy but it hurts. And I did had to sell some of my games to make up some of my losses but still am able to keep a pretty big collection of games I truly enjoy :) Its tough out there and which is why I invest in crypto and secure the assets I still have for dear life and I see a lot of the games in my collection as assets in the future and 20+ sealed Pokemon booster packs too that I may hold until like 2030 lol

These are video games, they are not that important. If selling them, helps solve a real life problem even a minor one that its more than worth it.
Since when GameStop gives free games away never ! Lmfao 😂
I have a rule where I don't spend money on videogames unless I have at least 2k in savings. Nothing wrong with spoiling yourself, but make sure that you're taken care of first
Set a gaming budget, don’t go over it and keep track of if. It helps with not dipping into your personal savings.
I'm the same way but mine is $15000. $2000 won't really fix a serious issue but I'm probably a lil older than you 😂

I have about 400 games across several platforms, but have about 200k net worth so i am very blessed financially. Social life, not so much.
Blessed & greatful, despite everything. Thank you for reminding me
I did, I sold 90% of my collection when I became a father 2years ago. All worth it tho!

$1 for an egg. Insurance through the roof. Tough to survive in these conditions.
May your Monday be full of joy and happiness

Madden NFL 25 = Madden 2014...because it's the 25th Madden series game since 'John Madden Football' was released in 1988, on the Apple II.

Same here bought my house in 2019 with a 2.4% rate Blessed not to have to do so but I would real quick if given the situation
I’m about to get all my games in a bin and sell them for way under there value to pay rent.
