The Gamecube hype peaked during the lockdowns, and like just about every other console things are starting to trend back down to earth. The reality is we are in bad economic times and the collecting market is sustained as long as a large number of people can partake( and not just the people with tons of cash to burn). You're going to see alot of collections up for sale soon, if not already, which will further drive down prices.
So true. I just saw a listing on Facebook Marketplace for like 8 Sega Saturn games CIB and five or so Dreamcast games for only 150 bucks. That's insane!!
Yes and no. I think the games that peaked are “hidden gem” games that people found out were bad and just fell for the hype. There’s good games that keep rising. The two Pokemon games went from $60/$80 in 2022/3 to $180/$200 last year. Think people were just hoping that trash turned into gold like it did for TCGs also i remember passing on chibi robo in 2023 cuz i thought $90 was outrageous a year later its $200 and going up still. So peak is kinda broad as it was only peaked for the pretty bad games. But quality games seem to keep rising sadly
Except that even before then prices on all retro gaming had already been wildly out of control for years, and things aren't even getting back to what they were 5 years ago. Sadly, some influencers are still boosting the GameCube hype and keeping prices artificially inflated. Heck' N Steve pointed out in a livestream that while GTA San Andreas sold around 14.5 million copies, Wii Sports likely sold double or even triple that. Yet, GTA San Andreas is relatively cheap at $5, while Wii Sports is priced at four times that amount. When I check out my local retro game shops, I often see 30 copies of Wii Sports on the shelves, which definitely raises some eyebrows about what's really happening with those prices. So I can see the same hype with the GameCube with artificial pump and dump scheme.
The reason Wii Sports holds it's value is because it's the game all 'new' purchasers of Wii's want to get and go back to and play. So it benefits everyone that the best selling used game isn't $5. So person buys a $60 wii console and $35 wii sports and relives that nostalgia
@@warfidem3 It still doesn't explain why there are so many copies of Wii Sports at retro stores. They must be super valuable since they hardly sell, even during Black Friday. The store owners are practically giving them away if you buy a Wii console. I even found five copies out in the wild last month! This week, I spotted one at a thrift store for $30, which raises some eyebrows about price manipulation. If that's really what people are willing to pay, then they might be getting ripped off. It seems like speculators are using bots to buy them up and create an artificial market. I've talked to a bunch of people looking to buy a Wii, and most of them would rather get Mario Kart or Super Mario instead of paying $30 for Wii Sports. So, who’s really telling the truth here? Is it just a ploy to keep prices high, or do we need to expose these speculators in the gaming world?
To be slightly fair to Wii Sports, it was sold in a paper sleeve which is horrible for discs. I wouldn't be surprised if a good chunk of discs out there have massive reading issues due to scratches. Meanwhile GTA would have been in a proper plastic case which protects it.

These prices are still through the roof-it’s almost like the hype is never going to end. At this rate, you might as well buy a Nintendo Switch Lite instead. It’s just silly.
And that's why ads stay up and up and up for months on end sometimes even a year. And never sell. I see the same ads over and over and over. I think saying it was inflated for no reason is neglecting what actually happened. There were plenty of reasons, #1 being the 2020-2021 boom in collectibles and the #2 being it hit the 20 year nostalgia mark. Also, Gamecube really didn't sell all that well, the level of availability compared to other consoles is lower, plus its Nintendo.
Not really. It BARELY inflated for a reason. People are acting like the prices became absurd 5 years ago, when in fact, they've BEEN absurd for at least 10 years, now. While 5 years ago there was a noticeable bump due to people staying home, the impact it had is pretty severely over blown most of the time, and prices had been insanely inflated long before that.
O man this brings back memory. When i just got my gamecube the first two games i got with it was viewtiful joe and time splitter. Man i miss my gamecube
Gamecube hype was when the kids who grew up with gamecube are now in their 20s and nostalgic. Pandemic and lockdown happens and they get free time from college and a government check while living at home with their parents, so time to bing.
It was so weird seeing the Gamecube inflation bubble happen in real time. I used to live near a retro game store. Gamecube game prices have always been a bit iffy but I was particular nostalgic with the Sonic games the gamecube had. Every Sonic game sold well on that console, plenty of copies to go around. The amount of copies they had and condition they had them in reflected the prices too. $15-30 was what i was willing to spend on those games and those where the prices they had them at. Now when i go back to that store the games are $50+ AND behind glass that needs to be unlocked. what the fuck. Pretty much every Sonic game on that console has an easy/cheaper alternative. Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are both on steam for like $8, Sonic Heroes/Shadow/Riders were released on every console and even PC during that generation. Sonic Mega and Gems collection are pretty much made obsolete because there are even more modern ports of the retro games that are easier to grab and possibly cheaper considering how much resellers are charging for the pre owned copies. There is no shortage of these games what the heck is happening with these prices? Now that the prices are so ridiculously high, resellers aren't bringing them back down because they know eventually they will make a sale and they want to keep the fake value where it is now. The only decent option now is to just grab the games at a deal, emulate (kills the whole point of collecting), or wait for the game companies to port/remake those games for modern hardware. We've seen the value of games be absolutely killed by remakes/remasters so I hope those happen more often.
Sadly a cursory glance on ebay shows a big part of the problem are sellers / resellers rather than collectors. Every copy of Chibi Robo for example is listed at over £200 and being sold by a Reseller. I sold my mint fully boxed Gameboy Player in 2016 (stupid I know) for £80 if I was lucky enough to find one in pristine condition i'd be paying a reseller over £150 and probably more tbh. I've had my GC since 2003 but collecting games I want to play is a nightmare.
I first played Pikmin 1 and 2 and Metroid Prime 1 and 2 on Wii, but I will always see these games as GameCube and will continue to appreciate the GameCube for games that I played on other consoles. Even comparatively, the GameCube still has such a great selection of games even if they are no longer exclusive. Playing these GameCube re-releases just goes to show the quantity and quality of these games. GameCube was definitely peak Nintendo.
Yeah I'd say the peak hype has died down, but I don't think prices are going down for the most part. Some have slightly, but you still have the rare games at minimum retaining value, while other random games like Sonic adventure battle 2 jumped to 100 as of right now even though it is readily available for download on steam and probably elsewhere.
And even then, the Wii U version of Wind Waker completely changes the artstyle, so it's not the same experience as the original on GameCube... unlike the Twilight Princess port, which simply adds HD textures to the game.
I stopped collecting for the cube years ago because it got way too expensive so I bought the original Xbox and 360 and been enjoying collecting for those and much cheaper.
Using the AV inputs on modern TVs typically introduces a lot of input lag unfortunately. Your best bet is something like a Retrotink to convert the signal with the lowest possible lag and best picture.
@@Southized I’m not going to waste the energy telling you why you’re wrong, but you are. Don’t talk about things unless you know you’re right: it makes the world shittier.
I really wish GameCube prices would just go down. Collecting for it is depressing thanks to all the actual good games going for upwards of $70-100. All I want to do is build a good game collection. But without Mario Superstar Baseball or Wario World, I feel like my collection isn't "as good" as I want it to be.
I had every sixth gen console back then and the GameCube definitely struggled imo. There were some serious droughts with no big games. I remember the wait for Geist and it was a flop. These days I mainly collect for the Xbox. The games are for the most part cheap and usually have the superior ports.
Not when games like Chibi Robo are $200+ and games like Shadow the Hedgehog (come on now) going for 100+ and more. GameCube still feels absolutely ridiculous.
Retro gaming prices in general have settled a bit, either lessening or noticeably slowing growth. GC is relatively similar. The only titles that i feel have taken a massive hit in the last couple of years are ones that got ported to switch like Sunshine and Paper Mario TTYD. Both of them are about half of what they used to go for, and thats with sunshine being a limited switch release. Supply out there is massive now. As more ports happen now and on Switch 2, we could see similar moves. I expect that much for Wind Waker and TP. Wii U ports didnt impact much, but Switch 2 ports would. More broadly speaking, Gamecube will always be popular and a bit pricey though. It was underexplored at the time compared to ps2 while also having great games at the final gen of predominantly offline and physical media gaming before the market changed. That gen was full of complete experiences that didnt require dlc, but were still refined with a lot of experimentation due to the leap in hardware capability making this gen feel relatively modern in gameplay. Only xbox original was making notable strides in online and occasionally having expansions, but their games were also still complete day 1 releases for the most part. It can make that gen a bit simpler yet satisfying to collect for than future gens.
Here’s hoping I can find a decent copy of XD or Kirby Air Ride under $200 this year. I let my little cousin borrow them over a decade ago and haven’t seen them since, and I’d love to play them again.
Honestly paying $215 for a game disk in plastic case is as meaningless as $250. It's still an eye watering waste of money since you can play GC roms either on easily soft modded Wii if you fancy 'real hardware' or upscaled to perfection on PC using Dolphin.
I started buying GameCube games to play on my Wii last year, I think I started too late in the game bc at the end of the last decade, my local store use to have a ton of them, now but nowadays is preaty much just sports games or game adaptions of animated kids movies for the most part, tho in december they got a bit of a shipment, not as big as their selection for Wii, PS2, OG XBOX, XBOX 360, PS4, XBOX ONE, XBOX SERIES X, with the only (disc-based) consoles that also have small selection being PS1, SEGA Dreamcast, SEGA CD, and other SEGA consoles
I knew once Ninte do began remastering and remaking GameCube I knew the GameCube market was about to burst. Won't ever be dirt cheap but it's momentum and hype has begun to slow down.
It hasn't. In fact, retrogaming prices are just as bad if not worse than they've been since the plandemic. GameCube games shouldn't cost more than 20 bucks, yet you won't find Twilight Princess at anything lower than 90, sometimes as high as 150. It's absurd.
@ I kept it because it’s my most important gaming pick up memory. My parents took me to every GameStop in town and the neighboring towns on launch to find it. It was very rare and you could only find Wii copies.
I did that with the Wii. I backed up my collection onto a thumb drive and sold all the discs in an ebay bundle for around $150. This was around 10 years ago. I can't lie, I kind of regret disposing of those despite that space-saving convenience of an all-digital Wii. I've done the same with my GameCube games, but fortunately I still have all my physical copies. I don't blame you though! It's nice to have your cake and eat it too!
@bcj842 I'll admit I kept only a few games that I actually only cared about, but as far as the rest goes, it was easy to let go of them because I didn't really need that many in my collection since I already obtained an abundance of PS2 games.
As far as Melee goes; there's a huge fanbase who refuses to play anything else. As a result, loose copies go for $50 at the absolute cheapest, and compete copies are still over $100. Ikaruga and wind waker are NOT on the Switch, and viewtiful joe started as a GameCube exclusive before being ported to the PS2. No Xbox port of the original viewtiful joe exists.
As more Switch ports from the gamecube come. We will see prices decline for the system The hype train has left because no one has money. - Metroid Prime Remastered - Pikmin 1+2 - 3d all stars -Baiton Kaitos / origions = 1+2 hd remaster - tales of symphonia - harvest moon - paper mario ttyd ^ the gamecube versions have dropped in price due to the switch releases, but games like Mario Sunshine... will be probably go back up if 3d all stars doesn't come back in rotation. Everyone wants Zelda, Fire Emblem, & pokemon from the gamecube to the switch. Yet they continue to dissapoint every year. Any game not made by Nintendo for the gamecube... will not see a port most likely.
Collecting would be cool if more games were affordable again. Anyone viewing and justifying it as a pure investment is lame and anyone who can't appreciate the joys of phrsucal is also lame even if their ideas of emulating or using rom carts/ODEs is way smarter
The twin snakes is locked to gamecube because it was made by silcon knights who got in serious legal troubles. Its a rights issue. Im sure there are people who know more on the issue but thats my understanding of it.
Collecting is so expensive. A copy of trails in the sky for psp is 115 bucks. Dammit lol but the normie games are 15-30 bucks. I can only imagine how much gamecube games are. Nintendo games tend to be pricey.
game collecting is a mess because losers who just want to make a buck ruin it for everyone else. i think it's only worthwhile when you're going after something nobody cares about. i'm not a physical purist by any means, but i have a pretty large 360 collection just because 7th gen emulation still isn't perfect and likely won't be for a fair while. if you can find cool games for like $5-20 with the occasional rare and full-price thing in there, then that's good times. $200 for a game anyone can play either in a ported version or with minimal effort on a computer? zero interest in that.
Chaos Field was originally on Sega Naomi arcade systems and got ported to Dreamcast in Japan then Ported to Gamecube. It also has a compilation port on Nintendo Wii via. Ultimate Shooting Collection and a Japan only Xbox 360 port in the collection Sakura Flamingo Archives ( Best way to experience this one is with an RGH / Modded system ) because Sakura Flamingo Archives is stupid expensive >$400USD
@@anthonywhittica5687 You're welcome. Chaos Field is a pretty dope game I bought it way back in 2005 when it first came out. Sakura Flamingo Archives version outside of Emulation is the best way to play it imo on modern tv setups. If you got OG CRT I feel GameCube or Dreamcast is the best way to play it. Radirgy ( Radio Allergy ) and Karous were fun Milestone shooters too especially for the trippy Cel-Shading effects and not many other shooters have done that art style.
You do a great job speaking and make great points while being engaging. But the video is lacking. I’d recommend using b roll or gameplay footage over holding a camera over a couple games for a few minutes at a time. Just my 2 cents! Thanks for entertaining me!
Bring back the Hype Y2k! Make Nintendo Great Again! Lol. The reality is that the GC has lost it's luster, because Nintendo has also lost it's luster. Nintendo has sit back on their laurels and let the Switch get taken over by Indy devs. Once they start dropping the Major Nintendo Heavies, the GameCube stuff will rise once again.
Zelda windwaker /twilight princess is not on switch it's on wii u and gamecube personally gamecube version are better with u is a pain to use to many cords
Prices fell off a cliff in 2024. I love my picoboot swiss gamecube. It's amazing. I have wireless adapters for controllers. It's a beast! I think it's still going to dip further. Check the prices the past 3 months on the top games. the top 10 lost like $300 - $100 on cib for the top 10. Crazy stuff.
Call me crazy but I saw the decline since the FlippyDrive is a thing now. I’m not interested in supporting inflated 2nd hand market GCN prices. Same with PSX or Saturn or Dreamcast since we have ODEs.
Floppy drive seems cool but the release hasn’t even fully come out. U probably won’t be able to buy one till the end of the year. U could easily do a Swiss boot through a game save for cheaper.
@ if I recall correctly, batch 2 pre-orders will be available in Spring. I could’ve done Swiss already if I wanted. I didn’t and want the flippy as the convenience and layout is more streamlined. Same reason I like MODE over GDEmu for Dreamcast, even if I have a GDEmu already. The little things make it finally worth it for me.
Visited 2 thrift stores and didn't see hardly any video games what-so-ever. Very disappointed. But, I did walk away with 1 game that I can flip for $10 and a racing wheel I may be able to sell for $12. So, not a total wasted trip. When I start seeing Gamecube games everywhere then I will believe the GameCube hype is over. But, haven't seen this yet in my area... not that I won't...But, just not yet. GameCube Zelda The Windwaker has a rare variant. The rare variant is the Canadian version of the game in which the front and back cover of the box has French language on it. Also, a red sticker exists that says "Strategy guide available".
I would have loved to continue collecting physical media. However, capitalists ruined it for me. So i got a 40 dollar wii, hacked it, and now i got every gamecube game ever running on proper hardware -- no emulation required. Now i can PLAY the GAMES -- the most important part i remind you. This is the way.

I think saying it was inflated for no reason is neglecting what actually happened. There were plenty of reasons, #1 being the 2020-2021 boom in collectibles and the #2 being it hit the 20 year nostalgia mark. Also, Gamecube really didn't sell all that well, the level of availability compared to other consoles is lower, plus its Nintendo.
accurate. basically a perfect storm
The reason they're so expensive now is because of the shadow hype. Shadow and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle shot up to $100 recently
I'm still not able to get a copy of Fire Emblem Path Of Radiance without having to sell one of my kidneys
Exactly😅
I’m finally building my go collection
Twin Snakes is a nightmare of trademarks because the developer (Silicon Knights) doesn't exist anymore, so it's never getting rereleased.
I'm downsizing a huge part of my collection. I have every gem you can think of.
I'm intrested in looking if you have an ebay or something. I have a very small collection.
The Wind Waker doesn't have a switch port. it was ported to Wii U, but there are rumors of Twilight Princess HD & Wind Waker HD getting Switch ports.
And even then, the Wii U version of Wind Waker completely changes the artstyle, so it's not the same experience as the original on GameCube... unlike the Twilight Princess port, which simply adds HD textures to the game.
There have also been such rumors since the Switch first released. There's not really any point in even mentioning them.
Maybe they'll come to the switch 2, but I give up waiting for them to be ported to the current switch.
I stopped collecting for the cube years ago because it got way too expensive so I bought the original Xbox and 360 and been enjoying collecting for those and much cheaper.
I noticed TVs no longer coming with AV inputs. Last TV broke. Looked for a replacement and all I saw, only had HDMI ports. Is this another reason?
Onn sells brand new 4k tvs with av input.
AVI to HDMI converters are your best friend in this case
Using the AV inputs on modern TVs typically introduces a lot of input lag unfortunately. Your best bet is something like a Retrotink to convert the signal with the lowest possible lag and best picture.
@@tyraelhermosa lol. Only adapters introduce input lag.🤦🏻♂️ people just repeat anything these days.
@@Southized I’m not going to waste the energy telling you why you’re wrong, but you are. Don’t talk about things unless you know you’re right: it makes the world shittier.
Ikaruga was even ported to the 360, and i believe is still available on the xbox marketplace for 5$
I really wish GameCube prices would just go down. Collecting for it is depressing thanks to all the actual good games going for upwards of $70-100.
All I want to do is build a good game collection. But without Mario Superstar Baseball or Wario World, I feel like my collection isn't "as good" as I want it to be.
What kind of TV do you use for your GameCube? Is it tube tv or flat screen.
I'm sure others have already commented this, but as of this moment LoZ Windwaker is not on Switch.
I dont agree with you most of the prices are just going up.
For me the holy grail is windwaker on gamecube linked to GBA for the tingle tuner. Few have experienced it.
Here’s hoping I can find a decent copy of XD or Kirby Air Ride under $200 this year. I let my little cousin borrow them over a decade ago and haven’t seen them since, and I’d love to play them again.
I got a full GameCube rom set😂😂
04:50 windwaker is not on switch.
How is mario kart double dash going to go up when there are hundred of CIB copies on ebay
My favorite gamecube title is Naruto clash of ninja 4 arguably the best fighting game of all time
I have a sealed copy 😅 Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4
Don't know if I'd rate it THAT highly, but I'd still easily put it in the top 3 arena fighters of all time.
@@Sin_Alder if you’re a Naruto fan it’s probably your favorite fighting game.
I saw someone sell super mario sunshine cib for $20 nature is healing ☺️
Just in time for me to build my collection without destroying my wallet 😂😂
I knew once Ninte do began remastering and remaking GameCube I knew the GameCube market was about to burst. Won't ever be dirt cheap but it's momentum and hype has begun to slow down.
And now sonic games on the cube went up lol
I like to play Resident Evil on PlayStation 2. Because you only need one disk.
You’re well-spoken and deliver your thoughts clearly. I like the Scott the Woz-ish style of games on the carpet/sofa/whatever and talking. 😂 It works.
I have a decent size physical collection but I do have a hard drive with entire collections from the ps2 to Atari.
It hasn't. In fact, retrogaming prices are just as bad if not worse than they've been since the plandemic. GameCube games shouldn't cost more than 20 bucks, yet you won't find Twilight Princess at anything lower than 90, sometimes as high as 150. It's absurd.
I only have Twilight Princess, NFS Underground 2, and THAW left on GameCube. Don’t have a GameCube or Wii to play them though sadly.
Twillight Princess is a very expensive game on the GameCube.
I picked my copy up for $20 CIB about 6 years ago.
@ I kept it because it’s my most important gaming pick up memory. My parents took me to every GameStop in town and the neighboring towns on launch to find it. It was very rare and you could only find Wii copies.
All the GameStop employees get first dibs to sell on eBay lol
Sold all of my games that I previously owned for my gamecube, modded it, and never looked back. Best decision I ever made!
@@bcj842I like both. My consoles are softmodded but I also have a physical collection.
@bcj842 I'll admit I kept only a few games that I actually only cared about, but as far as the rest goes, it was easy to let go of them because I didn't really need that many in my collection since I already obtained an abundance of PS2 games.
I bet when someone called you …you know DAMN well you looked behind you just to see who that was STOP THE CAP!….
best decision of your life? doubt that
Great video!
We still have to see if more gamecube games gonna get remaster or remake, I can see capcom remaking viewtiful Joe but the nintendo games forget it
As far as Melee goes; there's a huge fanbase who refuses to play anything else.
They are through the roof right now lol what are you talking about. So many games are worth 80-100$ and not going down anytime soon
Haha I wish this was true since the GameCube is my fav console to collect because it was my childhood console.
As more Switch ports from the gamecube come. We will see prices decline for the system
The hype train has left because no one has money.
- Metroid Prime Remastered
- Pikmin 1+2
- 3d all stars
-Baiton Kaitos / origions = 1+2 hd remaster
- tales of symphonia
- harvest moon
- paper mario ttyd
^ the gamecube versions have dropped in price due to the switch releases, but games like Mario Sunshine... will be probably go back up if 3d all stars doesn't come back in rotation.
Everyone wants Zelda, Fire Emblem, & pokemon from the gamecube to the switch. Yet they continue to dissapoint every year.
Any game not made by Nintendo for the gamecube... will not see a port most likely.
Wii is on the way up.
Wind waker isnt on the switch
Good video
nintendont on a back compat wii
game collecting is a mess because losers who just want to make a buck ruin it for everyone else. i think it's only worthwhile when you're going after something nobody cares about.
i'm not a physical purist by any means, but i have a pretty large 360 collection just because 7th gen emulation still isn't perfect and likely won't be for a fair while. if you can find cool games for like $5-20 with the occasional rare and full-price thing in there, then that's good times. $200 for a game anyone can play either in a ported version or with minimal effort on a computer? zero interest in that.
Hey I do have a Billy Hatcher
Chaos Field also released on the Dreamcast in Japan
Chaos Field was originally on Sega Naomi arcade systems and got ported to Dreamcast in Japan then Ported to Gamecube. It also has a compilation port on Nintendo Wii via. Ultimate Shooting Collection and a Japan only Xbox 360 port in the collection Sakura Flamingo Archives ( Best way to experience this one is with an RGH / Modded system ) because Sakura Flamingo Archives is stupid expensive >$400USD
@ wow thank you for the knowledge drop lol. Definitely gotta try those collections out lol
You can’t find wario world anywhere for under 100$ this is just wrong
The Wii was better than the game cube
Happy Wednesday
I have a soul caliber 2 and thousand year door for sell
Zelda windwaker /twilight princess is not on switch it's on wii u and gamecube personally gamecube version are better with u is a pain to use to many cords
Nintendo games are always overpriced.
Warioworld is a 2D platformer.
Its not an avtion adventure beat em up otr whatever you called it.
No, no, no. Collectors aren’t fake gamers (always). It’s more that collectors are more, well, collectors than video games players.
No
I collect and play. I like to own my games.
Yeah because people like garbage and the gamecube produced one of shitendos best
Prices are great for emulation. Never occurred to me it made sense to pay lol
Just need the console and a flippy drive, no need for expensive physical copies that can deteriorate
I have games from the 70s that are in good condition
Ye its been going down i cant resell games now much
Visited 2 thrift stores and didn't see hardly any video games what-so-ever.
Is "Batalion wars" worth 50€? 🫣
They are through the roof right now lol what are you talking about. So many games are worth 80-100$ and not going down anytime soon
