The one thing I would love to see is a comparison of the finish from say a 180 grit wheel and a 600 grit wheel…. It’s just not something I have any reference to. I use my grinder to set primary bevels on wood working Chisels and hand plane blades.
I have the 180 600 set up after e-mailing you - your advice is spot on for the combo - 180 to 600 sounds like a big grit jump but after small reshaping I only need the 600 for refreshing - the CBN material makes it fast - bowl gouge I run from one side to the other and back with a very light touch and I am all set and dangerously sharp - thanks Ken

I sharpen often and sometimes the 1 HP Rikon grinder with two CBN wheels (4-in-1 on one side and Mega Square on other side) is still coasting down when I go back for that resharpen for a final cut. The grinder and wheels are so well balanced it seems like it will coast forever.
Ken, I recently bought a used Tormek Supergrind 2000 and looking to use it for sharpening knifes primarily. Would you please reach out to Tormek owners for a review of your Tornato and spartan wheels for knife and plane blade sharpening. I love the idea of not using water, but not sure on grit(s) to buy. I have not seen on TH-cam any of your CBN wheels for Tormek being used with out water. I have your cbn wheels for my low speed grinder for turning tools and love them.
I have a question for you. My brother out-law is rebuilding a "Forney" reel sharpening machine, for the golf course where he works at, and it uses the typical grey and pink grinding wheels to sharpen the reel blades and the bed knives. Would you recommend a CBN wheel to do the job?
Another CBN wheel manufacturer claims that his company's wheels should only be used with very wear resistant steels. Otherwise they will become permanently and irreparably clogged? Can that be true? Can your wheels be used to sharpen a high volume of ordinary kitchen knives without issue? Also, you mentioned recommended grits for woodworking tools, but not for knives. What two grits would you recommend for a knife grinding business running the wheels on Tormeks? Thanks!

Hi Ken --As anyone ever experimented ( or do you know) if those type of wheels are useful for lapidary work? My hobby is polishing stone for jewelry … mostly The 80 grit Spartan seems like it would be a good wheel for the initial shaping & rough doming of the stone. The hardest stones are mostly a 7 on the mohs scale. Jaspers and agates ect… A difficult question--- but maybe you have some insight? Thanks

I am looking at a cbn wheel after spending hours on a 500 shapton with resetting primary bevel on my plane blade (pmv-11). I am looking at the mega wheel possibly and mainly will be chisels and plane blades. I have water stones of 1000 up to 16000 and I want to be able to go from setting the primary bevel from the cbn wheel to the 500 or 1000 grit and was wondering if I should get a higher grit than 80 because it would defeat the purpose if the 80 left me a lot of time back on the water stones. I have already decided on the 1/2 rikon just need some tips on the wheel grits because they ain't cheap but worth it the investment.

But now am wondering if the 1hp RIKON base will fit my JET grinder even if a minor modification are required.. I already sent him an email with some other questions about the washers needed to fit the CBN wheels on that grinder and am waiting for his reply.

I use a 120 and a 600 as a medium skill turner, and have never felt the wheels are the limit to how well I can sharpen. A wider wheel is nice if you are using larger tools (3/4" gouges, 1 1/2" skews, things like that), but generally the stone wheels you'll be replacing at 1" thick, so it should feel pretty natural.
I went with 180/600 1” wide also. They’re not narrow. They’re the width of the stone wheels that were there. You just have to swing your gouges carefully to keep them in the 1”. That’s not hard.
The article you mentioned was “Modern Tool Steels and Grinders,” by Tom Wirsing, but I’d be interested in reading the carbide insert sharpening article as well.

Should be great for your flat grinds, woodworking tools. I can't answer for a wood Turner or wood turning tools. Sorry
