  • Walked all the way around this beautiful old structure, Security did not bother us, nor did the people working on the site, so this audit became a Detroit history lesson. Now ownwed by Ford Motor Co. The station was opened back in January of 1914 and remained in service until January of 1988, it has been sitting derelict ever since. Ford paid 300 million for the property and is going to make it the hub for electric and autonomous vehicle research and development.

    Cool video! Good thing it's been saved in time. Have seen other too far gone to be restored. The quarry is in Indiana.

    It is good to bring the old beautiful buildings back. I hate it when they demolish them and put up the ugly glass buildings.

    • @Tater_Salad
      @Tater_Salad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      right, no craftsmanship in square glass structures.

    Beautiful building.... but instead of letting it do into dereliction, perhaps continual maintainance would be a better option...

      I'm sure Ford will do that once the restoration is complete. They only bought the building in June of 2018.

      michigan central railroad (part of Penn Central and NY Central owned by Vanderbuilt) left a long time ago. then it was owned by local billionaire slumlord Matty Maroun. he did NOTHING to it and im really surprised Ford was able to buy it from him...

    Me and my buddies used to hang out in that building there would be bums living in there and in the very top floor there was a led Zeppelin tag oh I'm going to look for them pictures... People were stealing the marble off the walls...and we were throwing shit down the elevator shafts crazy...

      If you remember on the first floor there was lockers they were still there in the 90s then like on the third floor there was a bank with a huge vault and then there was a room that had wood up on the wall that showed all the tracks with wiring and lights behind it...

    • @Tater_Salad
      @Tater_Salad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There were no elevator shafts

    • @313barrygmail
      @313barrygmail 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there were elevators we even went to the roof and seen the huge motors that would lift them.... I was trying to get one of the indicators of what floor you were on but somebody had stolen all of them they were like a dial on a clock above the elevator door....... The very top floor was all mechanical stuff no offices I even hung over the edge and took pictures down

      Where they installed the elevator was originally a smoke stack for the boilers in the basement. They modified the stack to put the elevator in. Sorry, I sift through so much information all the time. Your right, there were antique elevators. I was thinking about the one they installed 4 or 5 years ago.

    Henry Ford owned every part of the Model T., from raw material to finished product. Mines, forest, foundries, mills, factories, freighters, trains... Pioneered the assembly line and 8hr day. He was so far ahead of ALL auto makers that they never should've caught him but his vision was to continue to make the Model T. and was soon surpassed. No vision of the future and that's why the (Ford) Lions will always suck. Ironically they're the highest grossing NFL team. We love a loser and I bleed Honolulu blue.

    You might notice on the end of one of those pieces that you thought weighed as much is a car there was a tag that said 11,300 pounds.

      Just a monumental undertaking but remembering of course it was built in the early 1900s. It just makes you wonder how they did it then without all of the machinerywe have now. It is a beautiful building and will be again.
