    One thing I forgot to try was to emergency stop it from the outside with the lift going upwards with no passengers. Would the brakes have managed to stop the lift against the full weight of the counterweight?
    If the brakes get any weaker the lift could runaway. Here is a video of this happening

    The track breaks are often also physically connected to the main cables so if all of the cables somehow broke then the track brakes would engage and lock the lift in place in the shaft.

      Generally they are not on all lifts but are pretty common on higher speed high rise lifts.

      The track brakes are separate to the main cables

    • @nidbahn
      @nidbahn 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      they're not. if the main cables break then both the lift and the counterweight start going down, which tightens the safety governor cable which then pulls on a mechanism on the lift, engaging the track brakes

    I've come across an Otis Europa like this in an office building in Glasgow. when I safety broke it, it slowed down gently and if it was really serious, your arm or leg would be gone.

    OTIS brakes are pretty hard to mantain overall...
    Once as i was fixing frequency converter for other maintenance company i had to make some simple safety tests... 1.0m/s lift... 7 seconds of braking with empty cab- after 2nd try brakes started to smoke... Frequency converter was the smallest issue of this lift :D
    Told them that this lift is not able to be in operation due to poorbrake efficiency, took money for my work and GOODBYE
    3 seconds is acceptable for empty cab and up to 1.3m/s

    • @benolifts

    Question: if, due to bad luck, the lift cables break but, at the same time, also the governor cable, what would happen?

    • @jakewynn
      @jakewynn ปีที่แล้ว +14

      This is such a niche scenario that it may as well be considered impossible. The only way I see this happening is by some sort of external mass damage is to occur, for example a terrorist attack or an explosive device. In these scenarios the cable's breaking is the least of the worries.

    • @dutchrailroadcrossings
      @dutchrailroadcrossings ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In rare cases this could happen. If so, then the lift would actually fall down. Luckily that chance is so small that it is actually a question that doesn't really need to be asked.

      Brake oil? Lifts use an electric solenoid connected to a brake

    • @jakewynn
      @jakewynn ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, it probably needs a new spring, or maybe the braking surface has some oil or lubricating substance on it that prevents it from working properly. Remember, when the solenoid receives power it disengages the brake, as a form of fail safe. By default, the brake's are engaged on the lift.
