Thanks Ken I am hoping that the blue will get darker this year as I like a darker blue. Sky blue is also very popular currently. It's part of the hobby that I enjoy.. I have a very hard time getting views on my koi and my main ponds but shubunkin goldfish videos I get most of my views... Go figure.. lol
Chris your shubunkins are beautiful! Btw I have suggestions that I have been saving according to my experience and the experience selected by professional goldfish, specifically in terms of substrate, water chemistry and nutritional enhancement directly proportional to their health rate; as well as cost easy, high quality feeds. I will display a link to the bottom of the worded list below :) ONE Find the food that is determined by koi. As people look for food that's best for goldfish, the feeding ratio instructions and ingredients are sparsely understood as well as respected. Fillers like wheat, corn, soy and "fish meal" are added in quantity over quality for mass production, those are what I would call "fast feed". Fast feeds are processed too much with molecular additives and too technical. For when it comes to koi, the majority of the stores you see are made by Hikari, a prestigious Japanese-made company. The same reason applies that their feed consists of manufacturing and packaging problems being that quantity is their top priority. I say Koi because people ought to wanna feed the best to their show-stopping fish if they wanna earn rewards, but foods of their lines like Pure White, Deep Red, Saki-Hikari ; are just too expensive. I would go ahead and stick to *Nijikawa* . The koi food has qualities of both quantity in production but quite a marginal hill of qualities found nowhere else in mass produced feed. These feeds have shown and processed by science and artistry to do wonders! And if you're asking how does this do goldfish, they are just the same family, cyprinidae. The effects on koi should factor the same benefits to goldfish since the feed is entirely based on cellular and fish science(unlike the majority of feeds paid attention to animal science). Id say for people who wanna save big and never spend a money on feed every time, this is for you, but it tends to be an overkill as the feed that is big as 15lbs at the lowest size being in a household tank or pond of just less than a dozen perfect sized goldfish/koi. where high quality show fish feeds cost about 200-500 dollars for a ten pound feed, this is usually less than that! 15 pounds for 85 dollars on the food is like to compare yourself buying a 90% discount premium subscription on a site you owe your life to read them all! The pellets are 4-7 mm and are too big for goldfish under 5 inches. However making a gel food out of it after you soak the pellets in water and them blender it with gel powder or Repashy Soilent Green will raise your little goldfish with no problem. TWO: Get the substrate that is not for your preference but for the fish. It is annoying when we say that we couldn't let go when we needed that fashionista-ish environment to go impress visitors watching a let's say a tank with artificial plants and colorful pebbles and would say "wow that is very pretty" !. But in all cases this just takes away the naturality of the view that suppose to be tempting to fish. I look over at Facebook at The Goldfish Council group and saw sand in mostly every post (me at the time when I hate sand because of how fine and powdery it is and of how less 'native' it looks for goldish). So my mind of still not want sand but gravel kept me from being proud of the things they do with it, I then skipped post after post. Until something interesting came out. Ya know when you want gravel you want it to sink and not get sucked into the filter intake? Or when you want something less prone to congestion in the guts? Whelp the link of the person's post shared the reader like me to a link where my eyes of deception has been fooling my mind all this time! I learned that all sands are different in what it does to the tank and not just their chemical or mineral composition that matters. So sands like Estes Stony River sand are moderately "expensive" but not significant than gravel for an average price tag. The cheap quality beach sand and others are the ones that are bad because lacking ceramic/clay layering and uniformity of grain size, it causes bad chemical imbalance and deprives oxygen which induces brown algae. However the Estes marine sand does not do that and even at over 3 inches deep, the oxygen can cling through small holes, maximizing the surface area for "beneficial" bacteria to cultivate. THREE: Add some clay to keep your goldfish and koi very happy. Clay can come in all varieties and these days they are of a great aspect to mineralize your water. Before I thought about clay, the first days when I thought of it, I went to Amazon and looked up some cost effective stuff on substrates that are made with clay after an assumption that Seachem fluorite black and red was great for planted tanks. However, the clay substrates now and then are opt for you to not use substrate disturbing fish like goldfish and koi because it will heavily cloud the tank, blocking the light and the sediments will get too fined. Also, these types of substrates are labor intensive if you want to rinse out the powdery clay from the pebbles whenever you need to change the water and it's absolutely impossible to entirely get rid of, being that they are brittle and prone to erosion when placed in wet areas. I came to conclusion that I wouldn't wanna get a substrate like this and instead hoping for a supplementary mineralizer for the water can come in handy with something like that. And so I researched my butt of and came to Koi Clay! also called Calcium Bentonite or Montmorillonite, the clay is valued to be a miracle mineral for pond keepers as it does multiple things! This includes adding it to your homemade food for the fish, adding the powder to your garden plants, for skin care, and so forth. In waters where mineral abundance is scarce such as in municipal water, this clay can replenish the missing minerals that only found to be in natural bodies of pond and river water. Calcium bentonite also is a source of Japanese breeders' major mud ponds and it is how their koi has became the most prestigious of all forms of beauty. So when you place powdered montmorillonite in your aquarium or pond, you can expect less algae, less sick fish, more energy and better vitality. The finely powdered calcium bentonite clay have positive charge ions that sticks or adhere to particles and microbes in the water, and when they do they'll fall to the bottom in an appearance of murky cloud soup. Now here are the links I listed to you! see to it the link groups are spread between information about the product or material (list Alpha) and the site to the product(List Omega) ! Wow.. thanks for all the time, effort and thought you put into this comment. I appreciate it very much. I like to use a Canadian fish food company northfin. Their ingredients are amazing. They list every ingredient as in what the fish they use as krill, sardine and herring for their fish meal. And that is the first ingredients not grain.. But I am always open to trying other foods. I have used several Japanese foods but I can't afford to keep them on it as their regular foods. I am going to highlight your comment so I can refer to it. I have been keeping fish including koi for 50 years now. I keep all kinds of cyprinids , including koi, barbs, mountain minnows and of course shubunkin goldfish. My Shubunkin Goldfish go outside for the summer and I add some clay...but in the winter they stay inside.. I don't have a large filtration system, I think the clay would clog it. .
@@stubbsaquatics6080 The good news! The recommended food I told you about is made within the largest fish feed manufacturer that sells its maximized aquaculture fish feeds globally; that being EWOS(right in Canada!!) . Another good news is Nijikawa is accepted by very skilled and well known koi breeders in Japan and since then due to their open responses of knowledge and criticism it has become the first ever American feed to grow positivity of the liking even more than Hikari and +40 farms are using it then. Nijikawa seems like a Japanese quality food but made right next to your door ;) When I look at the food I don't see it as a show fish grade meal but more of a premium pediatrician/probiotic kind of feed that acts with all the cellular performance. So when the founder of the company thought of biogenesis, he ought to make it as a food for the millions because he believes the beauty doesn't come from the outside but at the core of the fish. So with that that's how many of us in the US seem to love hard on the feed because it's not for "show type" fish but for any grade! That's why I ought to call it a pediatrician/probiotic feed While I read dissolved clay can damage that is only true for those reasons I'll explain. When you get ordinary clay and pour it in your water, the mixed contents of other non essential matrix within the product clump up eventually, creating damages through the propeller axis and can no longer be powdered. That is also due to the size of the grain not being both consistent and small. I thanked you too for giving me a heart and a warming comment! I love to explain things that are related in suiting along being the best of the best and recieve great value to your pets. And when I'm wrong I'll go ask why am I or how I say that doesn't apply to your suits :). Really this is fun to be openly social because you can get quicker access to very interesting places not much of anyone known about ! Now keep raising your show stopping shiro utsuri, showa, and so forth of your beloved goldfish brother! I been looking forward to patiently wait so many more updates for the future ☺️
Thanks for the update on the shubunkins Chris. They are certainly developing nicely. I agree that the high protein feed helps them grow well. Temp also will assist as long as it's not too high. When picking them for an outside pond, choose ones that look good from the top. You'll be looking at them from the top. Seen too many mistakes of people buying Koi because they looked good all over.

Hello beautiful fish! I have a 300g pond I'm setting up and I'm going to go with Shubunkins. I live in South East Texas. Do I need to install a heater to the pond and if so what watt and how many do you recommend? I'm moving over to freshwater from Saltwater tanks etc. Thanks in advanced!
Hi there. Thanks for watching. How deep is your 300 gallon pond. . If it's at least 2 feet deep there should be no problem in southern Texas. I have kept them outside in central Ontario Canada in the winter in 3 feet of water. The deeper you go the better both for cold and heat. Hope that helped
Having less goldfish in a grow out tank and frequent water changes will reduce the growth inhibiting hormone in the water and will lead to more growth. I prefer the longer fins as well.
I totally agree with you. That hormone saves them from getting eaten generally by their brothers and sisters.. but stunts them.. I wish my pond that they went into got a little warmer to help with growth but they should do ok. Thanks again for your great comments

Hi Amanda in beautiful Ireland.
We get frost until the end of May where I live in Canada, unfortunately we get frost in September but the shubunkin can stay out until mid October..
I actually keep tropicals out in June to September.
Sounds like you have a great little set up.
My koi stay out year round
Thanks for your support and kindness.
Wow l just rewatched and went to comment! Thanks for your reply!
Im hoping to breed Koi patterned Shubs...my 'cull' fish are now 4 ins big healthy fish. Im very very happy how they coloured up too!
@amandadonegan2137 I look forward to seeing them..
I am releasing a video Friday of my very best shubbies... Some have a distinct koi pattern.. these are my best ever .. I think they are show quality if I can say so
Thanks so much for your kindness and support. It means a lot
Beautiful fish! Great video :)
Thanks so very much
Those shubunkins are so cute!..Man I love your crystal clear water. Your pond looks very pretty. Maybe I'll ask my husband to add wood around my lotus pond like how you did yours. Seems very low maintenence as well because of weeds. Hopefully you don't get hit to hard from that storm the other day. Stay safe buddy!.
Thanks Ra
Our area was hit pretty bad... Most areas are without power, or cell service.
We are ok... A lot of trees down.
I think you will love the deck around your pond.. much easier..
@@stubbsaquatics6080 awe... happy you guys are safe. I saw videos of the storm from Chris and other folks that I subs to and it looks pretty nasty. The folks that posted the storm on their channel got lots of views as well. My husband did make a sitting deck area in front of the pond. But, now that I saw yours I think I will ask him to expand it :)

All a little light for my taste as I prefer the darker blue/black ones but considering they're fry that you've spawned and raised you have some nice looking fish Chris. and something to be proud of. Here's hoping they develop the way you want them too over the summer. 👍🏻 👍🏻
Thanks Ken
I am hoping that the blue will get darker this year as I like a darker blue.
I will display a link to the bottom of the worded list below :)
ONE Find the food that is determined by koi.

Wow.. thanks for all the time, effort and thought you put into this comment.
Nijikawa seems like a Japanese quality food but made right next to your door ;)
When I look at the food I don't see it as a show fish grade meal but more of a premium pediatrician/probiotic kind of feed that acts with all the cellular performance. So when the founder of the company thought of biogenesis, he ought to make it as a food for the millions because he believes the beauty doesn't come from the outside but at the core of the fish. So with that that's how many of us in the US seem to love hard on the feed because it's not for "show type" fish but for any grade! That's why I ought to call it a pediatrician/probiotic feed
While I read dissolved clay can damage that is only true for those reasons I'll explain.

Totally agree 👍.. I always look at my fish from the top
I love 8 the black line is beautiful!! my goldies really love krill, I switched from brineshrimp to that because for some reason the frozen brine shrimp brand I get started having a really really weird and dirty consistency
Yeah you really got to be careful with the not getting good quality brine shrimp. But yeah krill is great for goldfish and koi and what Just about every fish that you have. Thanks Brennan for your continued support
@@stubbsaquatics6080 yesh it's the same brand I always get its usually pretty good. just 2 packs instead of 1 for a few more bucks. But this batch is beyond nasty almost nobody will eat it. Zabi doesn't care though so that's cool I guess 😂
