    A suggestion on your bow sprit. Put the lower padeye directly under the top padeye that will be your tack for the spinnaker. Threw bolt top and bottom padeyes together. You can put a sleeve in the tube to run the bolts threw to keep from crushing the tube when tightening.
    Also with the size of your bowsprit tube diameter and wall thicknesses a 90° angle or less might be good on the dolphin striker, lower support wire, to the halyard sheave on the mast.

      Hi Kim.Had to look up a few of those terms!!! But I can see that it's all about moving those forces so you almost balance the Bowsprit.
      I'm not sure how much force I need to compensate for but I do think the current pole is possibly a bit thin.
      That dolphin breaker would help as the pad eye doesn't give much of an angle.
      However I need to also balance this up against how easily I can fit and remove it so it has become a good challenge to get right!

    If the boat was full of water when you put it on the trailer it will have been that. The boat probably weighed over a ton full of water. That load spread out is fine. But all that weight on 2 rollers is too much for the hull. Such a shame. Sorry for the bad news Dave 😢

      Hi George, cheers for the comment. Well I wondered about that myself, and whilst I think it probably didn't help, I don't think the crack happened at that point. Main reason is that the water had gone by the time I got the rollers up to that position. I'm thinking that something must have let the water in before that and the more I look at the bung, the more I think it was OK. The washer does need replacing but it still created a water tight fit.
      I think I may have found the route cause of the crack. IN the next video (or the next one!!) I htink we work it out.

    Maybe if you use thinner plywood (5 or 6 mm), you could bend it slightly to fit the hole, before you epoxy it.

      Hi David, cheers for the comment. So I don't think there's any hole, just a hairline crack. I am hoping when we have a closer look that it'll be a case of just re-fibreglassing the crack to make it watertight again.

    I admire your optimistic outlook, I would be very despondent to have made that discovery as you did. It seems to me that the hull may have become distorted and cracked along the seam when you were retrieving the boat at the time the trailer cradle also broke under the strain. I think the repair will be tricky as it will require access from both inside and outside and quite a bit of fiberglass repair skills as well. So here's wishing you all the best and I will be interested to follow your progress.

      Hi John. Cheers for the comment. Well my fibreglassing skills are getting better and better and will be tested once again here. I have spoken to a few Drascombe folk about it already and they have all told me it should be pretty simple. Repair from inside, make sure I fibreglass enough and then ensure the outside gelcoat crack is sealed with some new gelcoat. Just make sure the ends of the crack are identified or the leak will still be there!! Apparently i'm not the first person they've seen with this so that makes me feel a bit better!!!
      One of the club boats here has cracked down the middle, along the keel band and its been held together with tape for 12 months and still floating so here's hoping!!!
      The cradle I think has a story of its own. It definitely dragged when we tried to get the drain plug clear of the water on the trailer and perhaps I was a bit eager to get her out, however as for the crack, that should have technically already been done. Unless of course it was the bung originally and the crack has happened on top of that? However the boat was nowhere near that roller when I hauled her out and emptied her, so that crack would have already been there if my sherlock holmes logic has it right!!!.
      So right now, I think the crack was the cause, and i'm going to search through videos to work out what may have caused it. I have lots of them on that side. I wonder if me clambering all over the boat all winter has had an effect?
      Another thing I have remember is that over Christmas the cover was left on and collected about 2 tonnes of water. That may have done it?

      Haha, Yes i think thats pretty apt. It has been a bit of a calamity at the beginning of this season. Hopefully I can become Captain "Fixit" and get sailing again!!!

    Ah, well done on finding the crack, but I think I'd be starting to think about a replacement trailer with fewer rusty bits and a lot more support for the hull...
    I have the same crummy anemometer as your old one ... perhaps from seeing it on an earlier video 😊 What did you get to replace it?

    • @SailingWithDave
      @SailingWithDave  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Quentin, Well my trailer is a bit different to some of the Luggers here, but it's also the same as a few others i've seen. The ones here are defintely a bit more chunky and have no side rollers. However they compensate by having 4 sets of rollers each side on the swinging cradle, rather than the 2 I have. Either way we need to get to the bottom of this.
      Yes the old Anemometer turns out was a bit rubbish!!! The new one is this one here:
      www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07JBW8VPX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      So far it has been great. I used it next to one of the instructors that came down and he has a decent one and it was almost bang on with his.

    I'll be interested to see inside your bouyancy tanks and how the leak is fixed. Also if there was something that led to the split. Coincidence that it's right beside the trailer roller?

    • @SailingWithDave
      @SailingWithDave  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Phil. Well I don't think it's probably a coincidence being right on that roller. I've never been mega happy them and the position they are in and am now wondering what may have caused pressure on them over winter? I will get to the bottom of it though and yes it will be interesting to see what is inside those tanlks for sure!!

    • @philj3727
      @philj3727 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Dave, that outer roller of the pair near the leak doesn’t seem to be giving much support. If you haven't already it might be worth thinking about repositioning them.

    • @SailingWithDave
      @SailingWithDave  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@philj3727 I agree Phil. These rollers are pain to be honest and we need to give this some thought. I don;t really know why they take any weight at all. Really they need to be more on the side to stop the boat rocking so going to try and tweak them when I get the boat off the trailer and back into the water.

  • @HELIFAN1
    @HELIFAN1 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Mmm, that leak turns out to be much more complicated than expected. I’m curious what caused that bent in the hull in the first place. Could it be your movements inside the boat during your projects in winter while on the trailer?
    Did you examine previous footage for presence of that bent after Lulu was taken out of the water last season?

    • @SailingWithDave
      @SailingWithDave  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well Helifan we will be doing that without doubt and the story will unfold i'm sure, but needless to say it surprised everything that it wasn't the bung, despite the dodgy rubber washer!!!
