In this video I cast a piece of Cholla cactus in resin, and turned it into a vase. We picked this piece up in Quartzsite AZ last year on our road trip. The vase is 7" x 4" and cast with Super cast epoxy. Stone Coat Epoxy www.stonecoatcountertops.com?a...
Cactus 🌵. I have never had an opportunity to work with it. With the resin, yours came out great. The contrast between the cactus and the resin is awesome.
Oh my gosh, I just wanted to tell you how awesome that was to watch, like for real I wasn't feeling good, and it made my day. Thank you for that video.
Carl -- It turned out great. I'm sure any of us would be proud to have turned it ourselves. I know I would be. I live in Arizona and haven't seen too many pieces of cholla that large and that straight. Obviously, I need to look more closely when I'm out hiking. I mean, it grows wild around here... An advantage of stabilizing the cactus before casting is that your vase could have been used with water to hold fresh flowers. That's the only reason I can think of for stabilizing the cactus. With a vase, that might be reason enough!
Thanks for the video. Finally someone who actually tells us how to load the blank along with what fittings, tools and products to use. Brilliant. Cheers
Of all my years growing up in the desert southwest, I never thought the cholla could be turned. In fact, I never thought it was good for anything other than being a cactus plant skelton, firewood or for decorative purposes. Nice idea, Carl!!! Thanks for sharing. Cholla...chȯi-yə or if this helps “Choh yah”, Choi yah, Choy ya. Though some may disagree with the last one.
Looks great Carl. You probably know this, but instead of wrestling those resin shavings wrapped around the tailstock. An air tool blast removes them in an instant. Enjoy your work and your knowledge!
Very cool project. Have you tried putting a light inside to see how it shines through the resin and the thinner parts of the cholla? Also, I think an owl would make a good project with it, maybe using the cholla for the head. The larger holes would make great owl eyes. Again, a great project.
I love Cholla! Have not seen it that large (I'm only familar w/ Walking Stick Cholla in New Mexico). Got to be careful as it throws it's spines (at least it seems to)
Hey Carl. Try and test use Pam cooking spray as a mold release. I have never tried it but I was thinking it should work. Mold release for injection molding I have seen what look and feels a lot like a silicone spray which may work also. Although Woodcraft does like taking your money. Lol.
Wasn't sure, did you use a pressure pot on this or just let it set at room temp? I've not used this resin--do you normally need a pressure pot for deep pours? Ho do you get rid of bubbles? Neat piece. I wonder where I can get it in NJ. Will check Amazon
Hi Tom, I didn't us a pressure pot. This is a deep casting epoxy and you don't need a pressure pot. Woodcraft may have it, but here's the link www.stonecoatcountertops.com/woodworking?aff=5
I'm catching up on my Carl Jacobson videos. I have a couple ?'s. 1. How much did the vase weigh when you took it out of the mold? 2. I saw you have a fair bit left of the cactus. Will we see more projects with this material or do you like to save some for projects to sell?
Boa tarde Sr Cal, me diga uma coisa, ao tornear resina, suas goivas , perdem o corte ?? __ Lhe enviei um e-mail de uma das minhas peças terminada dia 30-1-2021, abraços.
If your talking about the resin part, I barley know what I'm doing. I would check out Jack Thompson, and Zac Higgins. If you're talking about the turning part, I would start out with something smaller, like a pen or bottle stopper. I hope this helps.

Thank you David! Yes I would keep an eye out this stuff is cool. I'll try and stabilize the next piece I'm sure it'll help.

Thank you! It's really cool stuff! I'm looking forward to coming up with something for the rest of it.
If you come across it while it’s alive...it’s nasty, a jumping cactus!
That came out great Buddy! Love it, and your shirt, thanks for sharing brother!
Thank you brother!!
Looks great Carl. You probably know this, but instead of wrestling those resin shavings wrapped around the tailstock. An air tool blast removes them in an instant. Enjoy your work and your knowledge!
Thank you very much, and Thanks for the tip!

Thank you very much!! I do have another large piece that I want to make a lamp with. The light shines really nice through it!

Beautiful 💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you!!
Man I could listen to you read a book or a cereal box or a blender manual. Neat voice!
😊 thank you!!
Thanks for sharing Carl! Cholla makes for interesting casted turnings. By the way that's pronounced choya.
Take care, Dave
Thank you David!! I got the translation from Google Translate.. lol
Olá você e um fenomeno, ficou uma obra de arte super linda meus parabéns e um forte abraço....🎃😊
Muito obrigado!!
Looks great :)
Thanks!
What the heck is that cactus 🌵 so nice
Ya, it's really cool.
Hey Carl, another beautiful piece, thank you for sharing. One thing that always bothers me though is the amount of waste resin.
Thank you Rob!! Yeah there's always going to be some waste.
thank you for sharing
Thank you!

Good idea! Iv'e never looked to see what's in the mold release, it might be the same stuff.
Try rubbing Vaseline inside the mold instead of mold release. Works well.
Thanks foe the tip :)
Awesome Carl! Pronounced “Choy-uh” though ;)
Thanks Michael :)
nice carl!! Cover that crack with a clock :D
Hahaha...Thanks buddy!
Wasn't too sure of the colour when you poured it but it really turned out beautiful! Lots of problems on the way but in the end it looked great!
Thank you buddy :)
That's a really nice piece. A lot of beautiful, deep dimension. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you very much!
Wondering if it would have been better to fill the inside/center with something other then the resin then fill the outside? Still looks nice.
Thank you, yes something inside would work and save resin.
Nice
Thanks Tim!!
Beautiful. Please forgive me but I have a question. You have put this on TH-cam so it must be ok but I thought you couldn't pick cactus'.
Thank you Tina!! I bought this at a store. I'm sure it was already dry when they got it :)
Wasn't sure, did you use a pressure pot on this or just let it set at room temp? I've not used this resin--do you normally need a pressure pot for deep pours? Ho do you get rid of bubbles? Neat piece. I wonder where I can get it in NJ. Will check Amazon

Carl please what did you use in your head stock to screw the cone on when you turned the vase around ?
It was just my spur center www.turnrobust.com/product/cup-center-wbowl-drive-set/
I'm catching up on my Carl Jacobson videos. I have a couple ?'s.
1. How much did the vase weigh when you took it out of the mold?
2. I saw you have a fair bit left of the cactus. Will we see more projects with this material or do you like to save some for projects to sell?
Thank you Tracy!! It was pretty heavy, probably about 10lbs Yes definitely! I'm thinking about making a table lamp out of the other piece.
Wow, that is beautiful, love the color. Also, how do you have your magnifying lamp attached to your lathe?
Thank you very much Christopher! There's hole on my head stock that it fits in perfectly.
OBRIGADO.
Over my skill level. Is there a easier method for novice like myself ?
If your talking about the resin part, I barley know what I'm doing. I would check out Jack Thompson, and Zac Higgins. If you're talking about the turning part, I would start out with something smaller, like a pen or bottle stopper. I hope this helps.
@@CarlJacobson ,
You need some more wood ?
Wow. You sure are going to get a lot of question about what that is inside the resin.
Ya, it's really cool stuff!
0:44 Called an interference fit. Should have put a softwood plug in the center.
Yeah that would of saved some resin.
Red resin looks like💩
Thank you!
