      @@rapunzel39 actually, its the kind of fun filled shenaniganz I've started doing as of recently. I figured why not-especially the cardboard aspect since many stores toss their cardboard into separate dumpsters-so that material is pretty easy to come by and not necessarily having to worry about if their is something mysteriously spilled on the cardboard that may smell questionable sketchy. Now if only I could find free acetate to go with the Styrofoam to make my waterproof adhesive for the cardboard projects, Id be a happy dumpster diving diva!!😎🤙

    • @MoonpieCreations
      @MoonpieCreations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hey G58, There was a way. I could have made the wood waste block larger, but there are a few issues. 1. I wasn't sure if the cardboard would hold up to the resin. 2. I wasn't sure of the shape of the final bowl. 3. The bowl was only 7 in in diameter. There's only some much resin to save. In the end not much of these shavings went to waste. I recycle about 85% of all my shavings (wood and resin) into other bowls. I made a video using a larger waste block and you will see the issues I encounter. At the end of the video I explain a few things about this process: th-cam.com/video/1yYgsHl5a5I/w-d-xo.html

    I just found your channel today. I admire the way you think outside, under , behind and over the box! Good job , Sir; well executed. 40+ years ago,, I had the pleasure of going shopping with the founder of the company I was with at the time.. I had heard many stories of his "shopping trips" while trying to come up with a solution to a design problem. He was from an island in the UK. Walking through a Walmart in Tucson , AZ was a trip I will never forget. Where I saw a bowl, he saw a curve; where I saw a fork, he saw a material divider. His mind was not hampered by conventional thinking. He was able to usable detail mere mortals couldn't/didn't see. I believe you may enjoy the same affliction.( meant in the highest of compliments). Stay with it. Good job!

      I was wondering about air pockets. But I guess that’s what the pressure pot was for? Seems like a lot of wasted resin though... Why not stick an empty (or filled) container to fill the space? Would it collapse, or perhaps the piece of wood was giving it stability when it’s turned? I don’t know much about woodwork or acrylic, for that matter. Thanks!

    • @wizzlestick111
      @wizzlestick111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RokiMowntinHi The wood was to give the thing something to bite on the lathe. Resin can be fragile when turned, and the last thing you want is it to snap in the middle and go flying across the room and at you. Plus, wood is MUCH easier to drill out and attach than resin. The pressure pot was to make the air bubbles so tiny you cant see them. If he used a vacuum, the air would be pulled out, but the resin would foam and it would take much more time to get the bubbles out. The pressure also helps it to cure.

      @@saltycreole2673 😲 Boy, you got *that* right! 😳
      I was joking, and NEVER would I argue that having or getting an idea is terrible. Generally I *like* people who think, and even if I think the idea is bunk, it could engender interesting conversation. 😏
      I think I got that "four most feared words" from an old "I Love Lucy" show episode. Lucy could come up with the most outlandish (but at least entertaining) ideas. It really fed the show. Heh! 😁

    When turning bowls like these, most of the material in the center is just cut away, why not make a much deeper and wider inner plug so you use even less materials? or are the materials cheap enough where it just doesnt matter? A bowl like that has about what 80-90% waste? with a plug of the right size, you could make two of them using the same amount of materials.

      That would Look like a dog‘s Bowl. As far as I know, woodturners try to avoid that kind of bowls, because it‘s pretty unelegant. With expensive woods, most woodturners use a device like a woodcut to cut out the inner Part.

      @@horstp.7995 there is no reason it would have to look like a dogs bowl, just change the shape of the plug. In this case rather then a cylinder the plug shape would roughly match the shape of the bowl hes making.

      Hey Jessie, Good question. I wasn't sure is the cardboard would hold up to this experiment. So I went very cautious with the waste block. Normally I would have used a much bigger one. I also do not know the shape of a bowl until I am well into shaping it. The bowl tells me the shape as I make it.

    The end product looks good.
    EDIT: Nailed it. Like, I knew I would believe the result, but that's only because I know you're a damn good craftsman and artist. Good frickin' work!

    That’s really good if you have all those tools; machines; even that packaging! When you’ve only got a hammer; couple of screws and nails; you won’t get very far! I see all these great things being made; but not a chance I could make them! Just saying ......

      All you need is a lathe. I also have a friend who uses a grinder and cut off disc to make bowls.

    Have you done a gummy bear casting? Or rather, a faux gummy bear casting. I saw someone cast them in resin before and it was a sticky mess. My idea is to get some of those gummy bear silicone molds and whenever you have a little bit of excess resin you just pour it into a bear. After a while, when you’re have enough bears you can pile them I to a container and just fill the rest of the space with clear resin. Because the bears are NOT made of sugar, this should work out great.

      You can buy gummy bear molds on Amazon, could you cast the gummy bears in resin in different colors, and then cast it into clear? That would be super cool!
