I wonder why more bassists don't take inspiration from Cliff Burton. To make a bass guitar sound like a normal 6 string (or at least as close as you can get) was unique for the time. Unfortunately, I don't see too many examples of that style of bass being used in metal other than Cliff Era Metallica.
Funnily enough I really don't like Metallica, not any era of Metallica, but my tone is very dirt heavy, just lower and with a different tuning than you'd imagine
Thats kinda silly, he was the first to use some of those effects ,its perfectly fine to use some of the same effects and take it in another creative level or even some original works that would be showing respect to your influences, i mean imagine if that train of thought was prevailing after everyone heard jimi Hendrix or jaco pastorius? @lethalsparrow
The closest emulation of "Anesthesia" I've got is as following: BassWah (40% blend)->Ibanez TS (gain Muff(tone/sustain both around 45, mix 85)->AG750 amp (adjust to your liking, other amps are valid too)->delay(time
That's because Cliff actually didn't use fuzz for distortion, he used a tube screamer. The fuzz-wah was only used to get the screaming wah sound you hear in pulling teeth.
For "Bell Tolls" try the bridge pickup (or a blend of neck and bridge) and up the treble. Also, the expression pedal doesn't go with the song's rhythm but I've figured it sorta has a range between 2 bars (that is pedal down for 2 bars and halfway up for another 2 bars). Hope it helps. Great video man.
Cliff was playing above neck pickup or slightly close to bridge. He had mainly mids and lows with some drive, not full tone knob and used strings, that's why is that tone muffled (MoP sound). On RtL he had new strings, Alembic bass, tone had more treble and a lot more drive, I was never able to reproduce that tone as I lack bass and gear for that one but MoP one isn't that hard
@@agcacustoms2852 thanks. another question, have you played call of ktulu, pulling teeth, or orion with this? are the wah and distortion effects similar to the record?
@@roaming740 the wah is not the best and I really don’t like using it but it sounds alright just for playing but I wouldn’t recommend for an exact record sound. I’d try getting a real physical pedal for the wah but distortion wise it’s a decent emulator.
I gotta tell ya, I had a 20/20 Morley PFW and a 20/20 Morley Wah Boost and now the Zoom. I messed with quite a few different drives and settings on the wah on the Zoom and I can nail that Bells tone on the intro pretty closely. It helps if you go drive>wah>SVT head overdriven. But you NAILED the "clean" and slightly driven tones for MoP! 🤘. More Zoom videos for sure! It's way too fun to mess around with
Awesome video, i am really enjoying this series! there really isnt anything comparable here on yt and the zoom b1 four is the only pedal i have currently, so it really helps me out a lot. i'd love to see a rammstein or a system of a down episode!
What Cliff did in that song was play the straight notes from the main riff one half octave up so the guitar/bass form a power chord together. Steve Harris does that a lot.
Lol cliff was awesome. I found my own tone similar to his. 5 string basses, stereo signals rub through mesaBoogie bass400+ and a Peavey VB3. Turn up the gains past the reasonable level on the channel 2's and my wah started off a bass wah but has been heavily molested to boost the mids and lows. Tube amps getting overdriven are game changers.
Mannnnnn!!!! This tutorials for Zoom B1four are amazing. More please!!! Can you Make one with Mark King sound and Tony Levine ? Wheres is your Patreon!?
I'm so glad you enjoy this! Definitely will be more to come. I haven't looked into Mark King at all, but I did do a quick video on Tony Levin's tone in Sledgehammer on Instagram a while ago: instagram.com/tv/CAwX9FpgP-7/? Here's my Patreon: www.patreon.com/ampthebassplayer
Cliff's sound is so phenomenal and recognizable, a true 70s acid rock hippie and original executor of speed thrash death. His bass could annihilate an entire town.
Cliff doesn’t have a clean tone on master. It’s always overdriven amp. The difference is in your finger dynamics. Also cliff didn’t use any overdrive pedal during 1986. Just amp and compressor + wah boost
@AMP Why don't do the same with say Jason newsted and Cliff Burton but on zoom b3n and see whether a Morley Power Fuzz Wah will be compatible with the zoom b3n
Couple things wrong 1. Cliff only used a big muff on the recording of anesthesia 2.Cliff used a ts9 and not a ts808 3. Cliff used the Morley power wah boost and not fuzz after 1982
@@Fireglo Pictures show the TS9 profile. Fuzz wah was only used up until early 1984. Big muff was only studio anesthesia because he has never been seen using it live. Cliff himself said in an interview that he used the power wah boost
Like u hear on bell tolls the sound its a lot more clear and define and more agressive too but its close ...best bass player ever ret in peace great cliff lee burton 🙏
Most of Cliffs tone come from his hands, you could give him a cheap knock off and he would still sound like cliff, you could emulate everything he does and a lesser player wont sound like him
Metal is notorious for burying bass in the mix, but Metallica is so popular that it’s pretty easy to find the stems and get isolated bass. Here’s one where a fan puts the bass way up so you can hear it really well: th-cam.com/video/rUFjiu4K5-w/w-d-xo.html
I think it’s worst on Master of Puppets, like they went too far on the bass and fuzz. But on the first 2 albums I think it sticks out enough, should be a little louder for sure but it’s way better than MOP.
You didn't show the specific settings for any of those effects. Just what effects you were using. That's not that helpful, especially for someone who may not understand what all the specifics for each effect means.

Maybe a video about Les Claypool's sound? ;) Purple Onion era is IMHO the most interesting.

Because Cliff already did it? Idk about other bass players but I don't wanna sound like a copy of another player.
Because finding a lead who wouldn’t take a hit to his ego from a bass sounding better than him is impossible

Is wah pedal good?
I bought myself a Harley benton overdrive pedal, and now got a Vox classic wah wah for christmas. Legit sounds pretty close to cliff somehow🤣
I didn’t even know Harley benton made pedals lol

Issu my bass only has a single p style pickup in the middle position
Also. Don’t move the wah pedal. Keep it down
Just ordered the pedal today and had been looking for this exact thing a few months ago. Great video and thanks for the patch.

Tone is similar expect its fuzz>wah>Tube screamer and other effects( pitch shifter, delay and reverb)
cliff inspired me to play bass
Great video! I love my Bx1 Four! Can you do a Peter Steele bass done on that thing?
I keep getting requests for Peter Steele. I don’t think I’ve ever really listened to Type O Negative but I will put him on my list!

Cool video! Alfie did do a great job on Cliffs rig rundown for sure! That dude puts in a ton of work!!
That pedal is absolutely worth the money
cliffs tone was a little brighter than what you had going there
What's great about the patch I made is that you can increase the treble if you need. Try it out!
Loved this video, already a patron! Could you do a Les Claypool patch setup? Thanks!
He’s on my list, but in the meantime, Josh over at Bass Buzz has a fantastic video on him as well.
The most underrated bass line in any Metallica song has to be all of No Remorce.

Hey, I got a question, I’m wondering what pedal should buy, the valenton gp100 or the zoom b1x 4, in only play the bass, could you give and advice?
