I'm a guitarist of 15 years or so off and on, so mostly over the years I looked at 6 string players. But Cliff Burton has and always will be a huge influence on my personal style of playing. The guy had music and instrument mastery really figured out. Amazing and honorable musician that deserves love and respect.
@@WhichBass Never know, that whole story of the Hendrix Flying V shows that you *never* know how these things go. I mean, it was purposely painted over to remain hidden.
We all have to thank Dave Mustaine for Cliff Burton. Because if it wasnt for Dave making Ron quit, we never would have known who Cliff was. Thanks Dave.
When I first heard "FORMERLY of Metallica" I tought "wait dude, what do you mean by formerly???" and then ...I remembered :( I kinda forgot for a moment there..
Cliff’s sister Connie said in an video interview that Cliff once bemoaned to her that no amp could do what he wanted. So Connie suggested he go to college and learn electronics and make his own. He did this for a brief period but quit due to them requiring him to take classes such as English, and physical education. Connie then suggested that he go to the school bookstore and purchase the books he needed and teach himself. Which he did. Within six months he built his amplifier. Sadly, Connie never gave a time period for this, or whether he ever gigged with it. She claimed that she believes that Jim Martin has that amp, so it stands to reason it was during his Easy Street years. Other than that little bit, stand up job documenting his gear and rig.
very good info Alfie , there is no worse feeling than stolen equipment , back in 1980 my buddies and I rented a storage room to practice in so we didn't bother anyone One day we got back from lunch to find the lock cut and everything was stolen down to the last drum , we were devastated , that equipment was all we had and we never recovered after that and I alway wonder what could have been. Two weeks later our drummer lost his arm in a rollover car accident , it was horrible. We were doomed from the beginning.
Holy shit dude, that's absolutely horrible. I'm sorry to hear that, I have no words. I hope your mate made peace with his accident and the sting of stolen equipment has diminished over the years. My heart goes out to you all.
what I couldn't understand back then is how a guy playing my stolen bass could feel good about himself not to mention the guy that stole the drums, guitar and amps.
It's unfathomable. I got popped in 2011, one hot summer's day while sweating my balls off at work. The sub-human cock-swine entered through my kitchen window; 3 basses, Markbass LMK dual channel head, large travel bag with all my cords and pedals and stuff and things, a couple hundred dollars of change I was saving, my laptop. Got the head back a few weeks later after some grubby douche tried to pawn it, but the rest is gone. I had to question my humanity for the next little while as blood-drenched fantasies coursed through my spirit like black ichor. I have no patience for thieves. None.
sorry to hear this , there is no worse feeling than to be violated like this. I'm glad you got something back , I can imagine getting my bass back after some thief had his grubby hands on it. There's nothing worse than a dirty low down thief. I remember taking it very personal and yes my blood was boiling I was young and full of rage but has since passed.

I wanted to comment on the portion where you say Cliff used 2 Mesa Boogie Mark ii’s as shown in a photo. Those Boogies in that rack are both James Hetfield’s as the top one has the famous crunch berries sticker, which is the same one that would later sport James’ ‘Kill Bob Jovi’ sticker. Cheers and thanks for the video.
Thank you for the information for those of you who are interested in Cliff Burtons life, in the early years of Metallica, their rehearsal space and living quarters at the Music Building in Jamaica Queens NYC, along with other musicians filled the streets with their thrashing sounds... parents covered the ears of their children. On another occasion Cliff came across a rap concert held at the neighborhood local park where Run DMC were performing...at this time both groups hadn't released their debut album yet.
That was a really great presentation. I'm gonna watch the next one now. I really liked how you talked through it all. I don't know its hard to explain but you made it pump me up talking about Cliff and at the same time you never got douchy or lame O.
This channel is so unique because it finally shines light on some famous bass player rigs. There are millions dedicated to guitarists but what about bassists! Great video keep it up man :D

There is one more bass to mention, a natural rickenbacker. It was used as a backup on the Kill Em All tour and was stolen along with all the bands gear and van in late 83. This is also when the 2 backup flying v's and James's favovite Marshall head was stolen.

About to watch it!!!! My favorite channel on TH-cam!!! Edit: Came back to respond to video, at first I thought it was short, but so was his career. I absolutely till this day think he was the best bass player metal has ever had...miss you Cliff!
Ah Paul, you're too kind, thank you for the kind words! Cliff only played with Metallica for 3 years so there wasn't huge changes unfortunately. I'd love to have seen what he would play today if he was alive.
Which Bass...appreciation for you.... you answer your fan “bass”...Of all TH-cam channels out there, You respond...that’s loyalty. Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you Paul that's kind of you to say so. You and many others take the time out to let me know what you think. The least I can do is thank you for that. Glad to have you watching dude have a great weekend.
I purchased an Aria pro Cliff Burton signature series. Even though it sounds amazing it is not as low hard bashing as my Rickenbacker 4003 with the same set up as mentioned in this video. Thank you so much for the info!!!! It may not be that burgundy that Cliff's was but it sounds exactly the same and black suits me better
I like your Lemmy and Cliff videos, my basses are a mix of Cliff's Aria Pro and Lemmy's Rickenbastards and now i just finished my Murder One and Marsha replica amps. It's so much fun to play this incredible sounding gear, just unbelievable :)
Thank you Romualdo, part 2 will be out tomorrow don't miss it! You're the first person to suggest Paolo, I used to be obsessed with his BC Riches, that'll be an interesting video thanks!
You're kidding me?! That's awesome Fender J. No please don't mod it! I think vintage Rics are perfect the way they are. You got to share picture now, you know that right? :D
Which Bass ....no, I was joking. I'll NEVER do anything to it. It's beautiful . Looks just like it did in 75. I'll have to get a couple of pictures for you.
Hey Thomas, thanks for the comment dude. I used to talk about player EQs and settings but there wasn't much interest in it. If more viewers want that I'll gladly incorporate it! Make yourself known guys ;)
👍 Cliff's the reason I chose bass as my instrument! Also before his black and gold signature model was released Aria had put out the SB-CB (Cliff Burton). It was basically the SB-1000 with the oval inlays from the black and gold
Yeah, I read about the SB-CB. Since the official tribute come out it's in a bit of an odd place. Especially since they combine the BnG1 and the SB100 together. Just weird.
If you haven't played an Alembic and you get the chance jump on it, they feel amazing super comfortable , to me they feel like, a Washburn meets a 1970s P-bass. But my favorite bass of all time is the fender MB-4 so what do I know lol!
I'd love to play an Alembic, the build quality looks amazing and I want to see it for myself! After doing Jasons' rig the Alembics sound overtly heavy and that puts me off haha. MB-4? Wow interesting choice, what do you like about it?
(the Mb-4)Its super Comfortable, I it sounds good with low or high action( I like my action super low),and with the P/J pickups the tone options keep coming! Also I own 2 of them and they are both setup completely different one is tuned in drop C with slightly higher action(works great for death metal and black metal but I have played jazz on it)/ and the other the action is almost touching the frets ( no buzz at all) it's tuned to E standard or drop D (depending on whats being played) its great for thrash metal and funk I even play 80s pop songs on it, also I use Dean markley blue steel strings and play through a beheringer Bx4500H head and a bugera 4x12 cabnet.
Pete will be fun as you get to go all the way back to the 80s with Carnivore before his many rigs with Type O. When I saw them in the late 90s he had two Esh Stringers with B1 and B2 taped on the back (he swapped back and fourth seeming to prefer B2) I think these were slightly different from standard to accommodate the longer scale length for the B standard tuning. IIRC one of the Esh basses is in the 'My Girlfriend's Girlfriend' video briefly. I know he had a five string thunderbird briefly and then Ibanez' in Carnivore.
After you mentioned Damage Inc tour, you show a picture of day of the green (1985), I could not tell the amp he was using during this live but definitely was not his Randall, thanks for the info! But looks like he made the switch to Mesa Boogie before the Master of Puppet release.
Hi Wich Bass, I believe the Peavey Mark IV amp was played by someone else. I have the HH Bass Machine 250, which was a previous model of this amp, before Peavy bought the HH company. The inputs are on the front to the left of the white gain controls and - as far as I can see from the picture - no cable is connected.
@@WhichBass Hi Wich Bass, nice to hear from you again. I think we have to reveal some more information about Lemmy's amplifiers. I know all the very interesting details about the mods and I know lemmy wanted everyone to be able to have that great bass sound. I now know for sure that the Marshall 1992lem replica amp is different to Lemmy's "Murder One" and I think the original amp is more like a racecar, you can't sell a racecar to everyone and so the company decided on a soft version of this amplifier. Lemmy always said "Don't forget us" and I think keeping his sound alive is a good thing to do.
Cliff played that Rickenbacker 4001 since his hi school days. It didn't just appear during the Trauma Era! That can be easily checked. Also he didn't have his Rickenbacker modified until the Metallica tour of Ride the lightning. So he recorded "Kill em all" and "Ride the Lightning" with the Rickenbacker 4001 all original. It was at that time he had it modified with the Gibson EB-O pickup in the neck position and a Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position. This is also when the Strat pickup is said to have been added in the original bridge.
ive got one for them aria black an gold basses , was my first bass ,bought second hand in '91 its been battered an abused but i still have it ,great bass to play
@@WhichBass It does mate ,but finding it was blind luck , I had just joined a garage band but had no bass , the singer knew a guy selling one an it just happened to be the aria . Been a cliff fan I was beyond happy getting it .
Hi Alfie, great video. However the Boogie mark 3's are actually James' Boogie Mk2's. You can see the "Crunch Berries" sticker on the top one. I presume the other to be a spare, because the eq's are set the same. Keep on rocking!
Double D, good to see you back. Ah is that right?! I've had a quick look and I see what you mean. Bursting my bubble but thanks for the correction! I'd be pissed if my guitarist was sharing my effects rack. Jeeeez.
In the Back to the Front book Fleming the producer said that despite having an Aria deal Cliff only used the Ricky on Master of Puppets So all 3 records were recorded on that bass.
I own an Aria SB R-60. I believe Cliff used that instead of the SB-1000 just by looking at photos of both Aria's. I also have an original Aria catalog and the black and gold is a version of the R-60 not the 1000 as most people presume. The main difference is that the SB 1000 has a chicken head knob which changes the mids and a little bit of the treble. Also the R-60 has a 18mm spacing between the strings when the 1000 has a 16mm spacing, which in my opinion suits Cliff's attacking to string more.
Hey Alfie! I know it's been a while since this video but I know you still read the comments!. I'm looking to get a Cliff Burton ride the lightning NON lead bass tone. I know a lot of it comes from the EB0 pickup and I already got a mudbucker for my bass. My question is do you think I should put that mudbucker on a second output (Billy Sheehan style) or should I wire it in series and put every pickup in the same output jack? Thank you so much in advanced and I hope you answer!! Greetings from Mexico City.
I am not here to nitpick, but the Mesa 180 is not a poweramp. It is a full blown bassamp with tone controls, pre- and poweramp. The phrase "poweramp" is used for units without preamp and tone controls. You have to use a preamp, let be a pedal or a rackmount preamp, to go into a poweramp. You are able to use any full bassamp as poweramp, maybe using the preamp of another amp, routing the signal out of the "preamp out" - plug, and into the "poweramp in" plug of the amp you want to use as poweramp. This two plugs, "preamp out" and "poweramp in" are found on 99% of all bass and guitar amps, as they represent the intern effects loop, where you attach time based effects like delay or complete effects processors.

Cliff is the most innovative bass players since Paul McCartney. He was essentially the frontman of the band.

Great video dude I love the level of detail!! I’d love to see Matt freeman at some point.
Thank you Joshua, glad you enjoyed the details that makes me happy. Matt Freeman is a great suggestion, I'll see what I can do.
Both are awesome dude lucky you!
I like your Lemmy and Cliff videos, my basses are a mix of Cliff's Aria Pro and Lemmy's Rickenbastards and now i just finished my Murder One and Marsha replica amps. It's so much fun to play this incredible sounding gear, just unbelievable :)
That's awesome dude, you got to share some photos with me on Twitter @AlfieWilliamsUK I'd love to see them!
You should do one on Lemmy one of these days
You know what Chris, one of these days I'd love to. Thanks for the suggestion.
You're welcome! Thank you for making these great videos! I love them
He just did and completely forgot Lemmy's #2 bass in the early Motorhead days, the Thunderbird.
That's not true. A Thunderbird II and Thunderbird IV are both covered in the Lemmy vid.
very fast like button even before watching it :D
Too kind sir :)
Could you do a rundown of DD Verni's bass rig? He was one of the first guys to have that really punchy, treble heavy sound. Thanks a bunch!!!!!
DD has been suggested to me a lot so definitely John, I will see what I can do.
FINALLYYYYY it’s been so long! Awesome video!!!!!
Thanks Patricio, sorry for the wait, I hope you enjoyed it!
A damn informative run down, awesome sauce Alfie.
Luke! Nice to see you back, glad you enjoyed it :D
I think it'd be great if you could do Geddy Lee or Chris Squire. They're some of my favorite bassists, and I'd like to learn about his rig! Great vid!
Thank you Project Awesome, glad you liked the video. Geddy Lee is a top contender in the future for sure. I'll put Chris on the list!
Great video. Awesome channel. I just can't wait to see the part 2. I would like to see something about Paolo Gregoletto, from Trivium.
Thank you Romualdo, part 2 will be out tomorrow don't miss it! You're the first person to suggest Paolo, I used to be obsessed with his BC Riches, that'll be an interesting video thanks!
Billy Gould of Faith No More shared some nice Cliff stories. He was clearly a friend and fan.
Excellent again my friend. Keep em coming.
Thank you Lucy, I'll do just that!
Bro i love your comunication skills, thank you
Another great video! The Aria tribute bass looks amazing
Thank you for watching Eric, glad to have you. Man, that tribute bass. I don't think I'd want to play it. It's an epic art piece.
actually, the Sun AMP was used when Cliff and I played Kegger parties in the East Bay 1979, he never gigged with it otherwise.
Oh cool! Where did you hear that?
I still have the Ric 4001 I bought new in 75 in my collection. But I don't think I'll be doing any mods to it, at least in the near future....ha.
AAAAAAAAAW YEAAAAAAH BOYS, HERE WE GO
it'd be really cool if you talked about the player's eq (if possible) and the voicing of the amps and cabs, really loving the content btw :D
Hey Thomas, thanks for the comment dude. I used to talk about player EQs and settings but there wasn't much interest in it. If more viewers want that I'll gladly incorporate it!
Make yourself known guys ;)
good detailed video!
Thanks for filling in the info.
Glad it was helpful!
Just weird.
Great job! Im amazed you found the alembic info! Missed your videos!
Thanks Cyko, glad to have you watching. Ah man, the Alembic is a thing of mystery I hope this adds to the puzzle.
Wow dude, that's really interesting thanks for sharing. I'll have to try one of those basses if I see one.
Welcome back man great video
Thank you John! Glad to have you back watching too sir.
Impressed. Great work.
Thank you for watching Hamster, glad you enjoyed it.
this is a great video.
would you ever consider doing an episode on al cisneros.
Thank you Hippy, glad you enjoyed it. A lot of people have suggested Al Cisneros, I'll see what I can do sir.
This was a damn fun, and great video! Cheers :)
Thank you Alan, glad to have you watching.
I really like this informative video man, keep up the great WORK.
Peter Steele chapter pls!!
Peter Steele is a great suggestion Sergio, thank you.
Which Bass No problem, awesome videos by the way
@@WhichBass I second the motion for Peter Steele!!! I met him after a show in Cincinnati years ago. Could not have been nicer or more gracious.
Thanks Lemmy! Good call. After thinking about it a few years now I think it's someone elses rig.
Krist Novoselic next.
Great suggestion, I'll see what I can do.
Yes, about damn time!
Better late than neverrr :D
Cliff played that Rickenbacker 4001 since his hi school days. It didn't just appear during the Trauma Era! That can be easily checked. Also he didn't have his Rickenbacker modified until the Metallica tour of Ride the lightning. So he recorded "Kill em all" and "Ride the Lightning" with the Rickenbacker 4001 all original. It was at that time he had it modified with the Gibson EB-O pickup in the neck position and a Jazz Bass pickup in the bridge position. This is also when the Strat pickup is said to have been added in the original bridge.
Pretty sure I said all that!
Wow Jim Martin and Mike Bordin are awesome
That was a great video so many things i did not know about Cliff's Bass Rig....
Glad you liked it Kevin, there's so much more to Cliff than people think.
ive got one for them aria black an gold basses , was my first bass ,bought second hand in '91 its been battered an abused but i still have it ,great bass to play
Nice find! I bet it sound awesome.
@@WhichBass It does mate ,but finding it was blind luck , I had just joined a garage band but had no bass , the singer knew a guy selling one an it just happened to be the aria . Been a cliff fan I was beyond happy getting it .
No mention of the Wah pedal he used?
It's to my understnding that he used a Morley Wah that added some random fuzz to his tone.
I got you dude. th-cam.com/video/A1kwgxHO_Tc/w-d-xo.html
outstandig! great stuff man!
Thank you dude, glad you enjoyed it!
Welcome back my friend 😀
Thank you Joe, glad to have you watching :D
For a thrash band, Cliff used one of the most doom metal rigs ever!
I think if he'd lived he'd probably have started some sort of stoner doom side project. The guy smoked a lot of weed and was a huge Black Sabbath fan.
Cliff Burton 4 life!!!
I have waited so long
Nice vid man can't wait for the next one.
Thank you Crimson, I'll get it online as soon as I can.
Jeeeez.
No problem, I'm always glad to help. I really like the concept of your videos.
Cliff 1st used the sb1000 then used a black n gold.
@@Yourd4d correct but I'm saying is that that black n gold is a SB R-60 not a 1000 or an elite like most people think
Oh very interesting, good call.
Yeah I had a Mesa D-180 for many years. Very easy to get a Burton-esque tone on one (especially with a Rickenbacker).
