Sam Westphalen
In the absence of a drummer, Sam hits his guitar a lot in an attempt to get as much music out of the instrument as possible. His TH-cam videos have reached over 500,000 views (that's over 1,000,000 eyeballs) with an overwhelmingly positive response. He can be spotted on the streets of Sydney, earning more than minimum wage by playing guitar and receiving money from generous passersby. He can also write about himself in the 3rd person when necessary.

Not sure if you're aware, but Tool has covered this song.
Michael Putrino Nice.

The acoustic guitar has such a range of expressive voices, this guy seems to know where all of them have been hiding. Wow, just... wow.
Dude... is this real life?
yeah Maynard posted it on his personal facebook page
Well. I guess anyone else who tries to upload a cover of Lateralus on an Acoustic should just not bother anymore.
Holy shit this is incredible.
Greetings from the future. Tell that to this guy:

Sam at his best, why this didn't get a million views i don't know!!
totally agree! his best performance ever and best cover of Tool song on a acoustic guitar!
Well, sometimes good things come to those who wait, I just now discovered this tonight and added to it's view count, so there ya go. =)
Gosh, Sam, can you teach me?
AimTVSydney only halfway there ;D
+Kikuchyo I do like this cover. My favorite tool and acoustic cover is ginarae18's cover of jimmy. Goosebumps every time.
Seriously... WTF... This is absolutely amazing. Speechless. I can't even begin to imagine how much concentration and skill is required to play this.
This is.. by FAR.. one of the best, if not THE best Tool cover I have ever witnessed!
I wish I could hit the like button a million times. I've listened to this song 5 times and it still is as epic as it was the first time. Thanks Sam for working so hard, and doing what you do. It's very much appreciated.
This body of work still holds up 9yrs later.
I looooooooove Tool. They are my favourite band of all time...
And this cover is phenomenal. Well done!
Best tool cover I've ever heard.
This is one of those videos you could watch over and over and always appreciate.
Not only does he capture the feel and chords of the song, he has this whole other thing going on in his head that comes out as a groove beat that reinterpreted the whole song. Hands down, freaking amazing
This guy rocks!!! I may be a 58 yr. old woman, however, I grew up w/ROCK. Thumbs up! :D
+Gayle Areheart HOTTTT! ; )
Why hasnt this guy been in everybodys ear by now? Why in the Blue Fuck, am i just now finding this guy? Where can i buy everything he has ever recorded? Does anybody want to buy my guitar? I no longer need it. Needless to say, thumbed up. Subbed. Well f'n done yougn fella.
LOVE your work Sam. Everything you do is amazing. Even when people comment about your voice, to me its just comedic contrast. You put so much character into your vocals and your guitar work is, well, that speaks for itself. Keep it up, man!
Amazing... this guy does the voice, the guitar, the bass and the drum at the same time, on a SINGLE instrument...
Without a doubt, one of the most impressing performances I've EVER seen.
Your focus and control of percussion and melody at unusual tempos is astonishing to say the least.
Congratulations, the hard work really payed up.
We need more musicians like you to get exposure instead of whatever new bland tune they pump out on the mass media and repeat to exhaustion. The best of lucks
One of my favorite songs, done beautifully. Absolutely amazing technique.
Absolutely love these versions of great songs
you nailed the entire song in one instrument, you're a genius
This song demonstrates your talent so well. It's amazing to see such a master at work
My jaw was on the floor throughout the entire video! Some INSANE skills he's got!
Well, now I am sure that it takes a 'Godlike' being to cover one of the songs from the GODS! This is an out of the world piece of music mate :-)
Truly an extraordinary rendition. That you even had the audacity to attempt such a complex song this way is worth commending, but you really blew me (and everyone) away. This must have taken you so long to put together! The only way this could've been better would've been if you did the 5:6 polyrhythm, but that much complexity is not something anyone would expect. You play through the 3:4 polyrhythm jam out really well even though it's literally impossible without more people. Very impressive!
Absolutely amazing! Beautiful performance of one of my favorite songs.
One of the most Extraordinary Tool covers I've ever heard....and by ONE person, alone. W0W! You, Sir- are the man. ;)
This is my favorite song by Tool, and one of my favorite Rock songs ever. Thank you!
This is amazing.....what talent! I usually skip around to different parts of cover videos but this I watched in full. Just amazing man keep it up!
Man, this is absolutely one of the best interpretation ever! Keep going.
Support and sharing from Italy.
Cheers, dude!
Drums, guitar, bass and voice! All-in-one
This must be one of the best cover of lateralus that I ever heard.
Just great man! Keep doing!
one of the best things ive seen / heard musically for a long long time, well done Sir
If Tool where ever to be one-upped by anything, it would rightfully be a single human being. Taking in and combining the efforts of each member into one beautiful rendition of their song. Bravo.
The last 30 seconds really blew my mind. Really good job.
this is honestly the greatest thing I have ever seen.
Acoustic guitar can be so underestimated. It's stuff like this that can really show what this instrument can do in the right hands
A very gifted talent playing the title track to the holy gift.
The drums alone on this song are hard to play but my god this guy is playing both drum beat and guitar at the same time. WELL DONE!
Keep coming back to this video.. This is the fourth time I've watched it this week
Just Awesome ..this kind of skills and dedication make that great song always be so fresh interpretated... Thanks Sam and Thanks AimTVSydney to support this talent....regards
Listening to your covers is like getting my ears laid. I listen and watch and it brings nonstop tears of happiness. Every band that you have covered should be fucking proud. You are a guitar playing GOD!!!! Keep it up man
this guys is a BEAST!
Wow...I was utterly mesmerized by that performance. Just incredible, man! This goes to show that Tool brings about amazing musicianship in not just themselves, but everyone!
Woooooooww!!!!! I just can´t belive he is actually playing all these sonunds with only his guitar, just AWESOME!!
Don't know that this could be done any better. Hats off to ya Sir.
This is absolutely mesmerizing to watch and listen to
Oh okay so this is why Tool hasn't come out with a new album. This guy ate ALL of their souls. It makes so much sense now.
This one is my favorite so far. Also my favorite tool song to watch Live.
Couldn't wipe the smile off of my face the entire time. Amazing.
That was amazing. I thought I was expecting too much of solo acoustic guitarists when I searched "Lateralus acoustic guitar" but now I know, nothing is too much.
so cool, that rhythm hand is something else
Note the classical guitar position, the left wrist kept straight to allow maximum access to the fretboard. This is a new and exciting breed of soloist that includes percussion with style still in development. Listen to the original version of the song to appreciate this young mastet and his brilliant dynamics.
I not only love his skills, but also the great insightful comments
Best I've heard for a long time! Magic!
This is what I think the concept of "a cover" stands for; this is great both by itself and as a 'paraphrase' of the original.
2020 COVID-19 lockdown brought me here. Thank you for entertaining us all with your unearthly talent!
Most crunchy. I give it 46&2 thumbs up
I would see this shit 10.000 times
Dudes amazing. He’s got that stinkfist
This guy is a monster!! this is the type of cover I'd watch!
Lost of Words...Speechless!!!
Dude is on another level of guitar playing. wow.
This gives me goosebumps.
He switched it up from the other one I saw of him performing Lateralus and I must say I like this one a lot more, but they are both such amazing performances.
Amazing! Love the song choice. Your interpretation is fabulous. Thank you for posting!
Absolutely incredible. What a talent.
The greatest tool cover I've heard and I don't believe it can be topped. I nearly prefer it than the original song.
The last 30 or so seconds were intense, loved it. Need to learn percussion for guitar
jesus h christ. I normally cant stand cover songs but this..... this is just blew my mind absolutely amazing
Wow, this one is the best cover you've done yet imo.... great work!
My heart's racing because it was just that good.
Incredible.
Please keep making more videos. You are amazing!!
Dude you deserve a lots and lots of more fame! Kudos Sam! Keep on doing good work! Best wishes from India :)
Still that BEST I've ever seen !!
Dude your da man
Holy shit. that must have taken so long to come up with and practice to that level of excellence. I hope tool sees this, I'm sure that'd make your day. anyway, much respect keep doing your thing
You are outstanding... SAM = GENIUS!
Sweet Cola of mercy, this is spectacular! God bless the mother that gave him birth!
Sweet! I love the vocals on top of the guitar percussion

This almost sounds like it was remastered to be as perfect as it is. amazing
You're doing very well as a human being, phenomenal talent.
Absolutely mind blowing
The poly timing thing spot on!
This guy is insane. Good stuff, and very good take on the song.
Amazing and just so unique! Love it!
Thanks for the human emotion & connection man. Great to see life feeds on life
Wow! And before I knew it I listened for 15 min on repeat!! More tool buddy!
phenomenal... really really phenomenal
Wowowowowowow. Speechless. I listen to this cover on repeat while at work, I love everything about it...
WOW!!!! That was INSANE! definite eargasm!
The intro song is 'Grey Pigs'. It's an original that we filmed in this shoot. It's the next video in the playlist.
Right on, thanks. Could tell by the open high strings that something out of the ordinary was going on. It certainly works well for this style of playing.
Frikkin Awesome !!!! More Tool PLEASE !!!!!!!
this is just beyond incredible
Best acoustic percussion Tool cover I've ever heard :O
Awesome skills, brother. Following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
this is amazing. best one yet
