@Namari12 this is a concern that should be front and center to people who care about climate. That is likely to happen if Project 2025 is enacted. The action step I'm asking folks to take today, to download the NCA5 data, is one thing we can do to preserve current information. More needs to be protected. If NOAA is privatized, I think we need to work together to source and compile privatized weather outlooks- and get everyone in the community access, so we can stay alert to severe weather events. People should not need to pay to get a heads up there's a hurricane heading their way.
In 2017, hackathons were organized for Data Refuge, with funding for archival storage. I don't know where the funding came from. Maybe universities with research departments that depend on the data? Is AR in a position to spearhead a new effort? If not, can AR search, find, and report on any such efforts? I'm a retired software developer. Too out of date to return to the field but want to help rescue data any way I can.
@robinschaufler444 I'm reaching out to see what's been/being organized elsewhere, and early next week we're going to get organized on the Discord and evaluate our total capacity for this effort. I intend to report out on video as our plans develop & we get more info- so that folks who aren't on the Discord can stay informed & get involved.
What will we do if NOAA is defunded or privatized?
