When I was a kid, a couple of the old timers told me "never get a Social Security number. That's how they get their hooks in ya' ". Kinda difficult these days but I know what they meant. Stay small, keep it all. Good advice Mike!

The "Go getter" joke literally made me LOL.
I found masonry via necessity because of my old house needing repair. I discovered that I loved masonry work at the tender young age of 54. I now belong to a Bricklayers union where I am teasingly called "Apprentisaurus".
I love it but it is very physically demanding, and I thank GOD for my strength and stamina at this age. I'm even going to get certified to rappel because my company does that.
I have journeymen tell me they make a lot of money doing side work. It seems to be a good thing for them.
Thank you for sharing decades and decades of knowledge, Mike. You have probably been the biggest influence of this career change I made. I like your style, and as a teacher, you are magnificent. My goal is to in my later years, fix old ladies' porches and get free plates of food. Sounds good to me cause my wife can't cook.

Good advice, Mike. It's best to stay behind the scenes as much as possible working for yourself. Just doing people right will keep you in business because it really is hard for homeowners and small businesses to find dependable services. I've always used an older van to keep most of what I need and work out of, no need for a $50k plus truck to show off. Besides, if I see a guy pull up in a new shiny pick-m-up to bid I know he needs to add on some high-dollar payments. P.S. Thanks for including the Lord's word here. --Brant

    Hey Mike,
My name is Rena. I am a Yooper girl. That means I live in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Called the U.P. I am in my 60’s I bought my first duplex when I was 26. Since then I been buying houses & living in them for 3 to 5 years then resell. I do all the work myself, slow and steady. But I NEVER attempted concrete until last year when I started watching your channel. I love your channel. The stuff I did this summer and last summer, like you always say,,, NO BIG DEAL!! I was able to take my backhoe and backfill a couple of my walls because of learning to block up some basement windows, then instead of a wooden deck, I have a concrete patio.. THANK YOU!!
But this video was different. I always thought, I wonder what kind of guy he really is? The reason I wondered is because I would sometimes catch a glimpse of a light that would shine from you. And this video, it seemed to shine even brighter. Am I wrong in what I see, do you carry a torch for the Sun of Man?
Ok, if this is to personal, and you would rather not respond, I completely understand. Maybe a little bold of me to be asking. But, even though this video is approximately a year old, I will pray for your dad, you and your family.
    God Bless you Mike,
    RENA L DENNISON

I’ve had inspectors do the same thing you say make up what they want, I did what they wanted for free even though I was right. My strangely is I stick with ppl that are loyal to me that get me more work. I’m starting to avoid working out of town bc I get burned, they don’t want me there like you said before. Being in business isn’t always about money it’s liking your job. When you understand that the value of money is created by what you do with money not just the money . Most ppl don’t like fixing drywall or plaster but I can fix it without tearing it all out, a skill most ppl know nothing about. Doing the right thing and giving a fair honest service will create you wealth and good business in the future. Everyone’s about instant gratification not the long term results.

You say you’ve never met a rich mason. Well it’s mason’s and the like that I want to associate with. The value that you and others like you hold is a hundred fold, compared to heaps of money. Your honesty, wisdom, helpfulness, humbleness and many other great attributes are what make you rich in my books! You’re are an inspiration and hero to the common sense working class! As a humble man myself, the praise given to us may be hard to to hear at times. I hope you receive it well and are proud of your accomplishments. Thank you for being an excellent role model!

I had a building inspector who told me I wasn’t allowed to do what I needed to do, which was to place a demolition dumpster in the front yard near a house, so the roofers could throw shingles in the dumpster. He said that if I did not pick the dumpster back up and move it into the driveway out of the front yard. He would fine the homeowner $100. So he was very surprised the next morning, he walked into his office at city hall. I was standing in the waiting area, having a wonderful conversation with the mayor and the mayor asked me what he could do to help me and what my issue was, and I explained that I was trying to get information regarding this code and I wanted to see a copy stating that I could not place a rolloff dumpster where I had it placed. When the inspector came in, he immediately became upset and said he would get back with me. Long story short he never got back with me and I was able to put the dumpster where the contractor wanted it.

Great video Mike, Thank You for taking the time to explain the ins and outs of working in general! I remember when you could walk up to a job, meet the foreman, if they needed help they would put you to work. Now you have to get a physical, the application is 16 pages! Seriously 16 pages for the contractor I worked for. You have to wear a safety vest & safety harness, gloves and safety glasses. Don’t get me wrong, safety should be #1. We did crazy stuff back in the day. But the paper work is totally out of control. Insurance companies now rule. Staying small is the way to go! Take care.

Hi Mike I have been a carpenter for 40 years I am 57. it is nice to see these younger guys intresed in the trades . I have made a decent living and i feel like college is pushed to much and trades are frowned on today. Its hard to find young guys wanting to learn. I love your channel ,referred to you many times for some masonry tips. I am in the Philly area..Thanks

I started out 30 yrs ago in construction with intent of moving into rental properties. I purchased a ten unit bld & things were on a fast track. Then i ran into a customer from hell. A family member of my ex wife was out of work & i made mistake of hiring him. No need for details. I am 54 now & ladt week i had to knock out a drunk sub contractor that was harassing me on a job. This whole industry sucks.. I chuckle when i see the young guys at home chepo with big shiny trucks & trailors ..

Hello Mike, When you work with another mason/company for a few days to help you out on low risk jobs, what type of contract do you use if any? Or do you just pay them.

    • @MikeHaduck
      @MikeHaduck  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi Jon, almost all the time they are companies I work for before, no contract needed, usually send them a bill and they pay you that way, if it's your first time ask them how they want to pay, sometimes you will get paid for that day, everything depends on the situation and how long your helping them for, fairness and trust usually rule in those Situations, thanks Mike

Nice stove. I build masonry foundations, stoves, heaters, and ovens. I do post and beam timber framing, siding, roofing, hard scapes, and lake scapes too. I have commercial license. Working for lawyer now on oldest commercial building in that town. Hogs get slaughtered pigs stay in the pen. I am going to build a masonry earthship to get rid of bills. One of the things I had to look into was under foundation insulation. Fan of rock wool insulation. Simple rectangular building with a mono slope roof. Big masonry columns and 20 foot tall window openings. I install and remove docks and boat lifts too. Niche thing. I build and keep structures from sinking into the ground and shedding water. I like people that want to work from the poorest areas. Hire everybody as sub contractor. I pay by production. The inspector always laughs when I put down window big enough for fat fireman in gear for egress window. For what I pay for inspections. It's my my hour with inspector. I ask questions. Bank appraisers are a whole different story from inspectors. My name is a curse word to real estate agents. I make more off houses than they do to make bank appraiser happy. I am excited to be able to get nice stone in the U.P. of Michigan for my place. Fixing and flipping up the oldest houses I can buy is how I make extra money. If it's not a 150 years old I don't work on the building. Richardsonian Romanesque is my favorite masonry architecture style.

Until I left the valley at age 18 I had to deal with our coal stove so much, every day that I was glad to leave that kind of stove behind. In addition to being a cooking device it was a powerful heating device Winter AND Summer whether you wanted the heat or not. A lot of memories of those stoves, but no so much love.

Mike, I am not a builder, I am a retired accountant in England (the original one not the new one across the pond) and a bit of a "do-it-yourself"er. I came across your channel doing research to rectify some pointing that had been done badly and was causing bricks to spall. I have to say that I think watching this video would be the best 50 minutes anyone planning to start a business in any field, not just masonry, could spend! There is a lifetime of lessons learned in this 50 minutes. If you are ever in my neck of the woods I would just love to meet you and share a beer or three. Keep up the good work. With very best wishes.

I was wondering about your Dad*, when i heard you* say you're now in "Florida".. I was wondering if he's still healthy and safe. Or if he passed away. Sorry for the personal inquiry. You* don't have to answer, if you* think it's too personal of a question or topic to answer. Anyway, hope you're doing & feeling all well in Florida*. Just enjoy watching your videos for enjoyment, & much food for thought. And if i need to do a personal masonry job, i know where to find some of your excellent videos to watch & educate me. I have a friend who does foundations and the guy who did the trees and lot clearing showed up asking if the contractor had been around 🤔? Apparently he had been getting blown off and was owed $18,000. My friend luckily made sure he had a signed contract agreement as to what he was doing and amount of money. Previous guy had no contract lost out, my friend had to put a lean on it, and later received his money 10 years later when property was sold. Never trust anyone to pay even if they seem so nice, people that seem so nice sometimes do that to make you comfortable and feel a contract is not needed. Make sure it's signed, dated, and eligible printed and signed name not just a quick scribble that in court they could say that's not my signature 😉.

@@MikeHaduck The patronizing comment says it all, but just in general the whole "Don't trust anyone but your own two-hands" is a great way to not get anywhere in today's economy.
I'm 35, and have gotten three major raises in my life. All involved either taking a risk by betting against my employer or being willing to move to another state/country. None of it was based on my skill or credentials.
Now I have my bachelor's and ccna but the idea that you just stick to your hometown, bust your ass and grind, is the type of boomer foolishness people buy into while wondering why they're stuck working paycheck to paycheck with no savings.
