  • I've been hearing about way too many people lately with Megasquirt powered cars saying "I have no idea how much power it makes", there's no reason for that! One of the most commonly asked questions in the Turbo Miata community is "How much psi can the engine handle?" PSI doesn't bend rods - torque bends rods. If you're turning up the boost you need to know how much power you're making to stay safe. Of course this isn't going to be as accurate or as safe as using a real dyno (where you can easily listen for detonation, not worry about traffic, monitor engine vitals, etc), but it's certainly a super valuable tool.

    So I’m not sure if this was filmed before or after you did your trans swap but I think you are forgetting to factor that in. It will play a role in this calculation and I didn’t see that you changed ratios anywhere

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      This was before the trans swap. If you're running a non-factory trans, you just need to calculate how much to alter the diff ratio to offset the change in trans gearing. For the E30 trans, I just need to do this: (3rd gear pull)
      3.91 (diff) * 1.40 (E30 3rd) * 1.33 (Miata 3rd) = 4.12.
      VD only needs to know the final ratio, so you can alter the diff ratio input to counteract the trans ratio. Stock Miata 5-speed with 3.91 diff has a final of 5.20:1 in 3rd. With the Getrag trans, it's 5.47:1. So even though the car really has a 3.91, I need to do "4.12" * 1.33 (VD thinks 3rd is 1.33) to get the actual final of 5.47.
      Hopefully that makes sense. It would be much easier if VD just let you input the ratios on your own instead of having fixed values for the OEM transmissions in each car.

    Just a tip if you or anyone else isnt aware, tuner studio has a feature called "triggered logging" you can set different parameters for it to start and stop the datalog. I use throttle position (TPS) > 50% to start the log then when the throttle dips below 50% it shuts it off. Great way to isolate a pull in a single gear since you have to left of inbetween shifts and since virtual dyno can only use one gear. A lot easier than dicking around with your laptop in your passenger seat while driving.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@That_fella_named_J Not really, the only real requirement is that you need an ECU that can datalog. It's *possible* to do a pseudo Virtual Dyno with a stock ECU, using a stable/HD video camera on the tachometer, and using editing software to analyze the video frame by frame, to make a chart of RPM vs time (needs to be precise). Then make a 3 column excel spreadsheet with RPM, time in seconds, and throttle (pre-fill to 100). You can import that to Virtual Dyno. It's time consuming, and is subject to many innaccuracies (like tach being off, low quality video) but, it's possible.

So as long as youre going down or up the same slope, each time, you can still use that part of the road because youre mainly interested in the changes in power rather than the absolute power.

    but still my app was based on phone and just used accelerometer data and gps speed
    and use "calibration" to set rpms to certain speed this way calculate gearing
    still might be decent app to make no need for dataloging just phone with gps
    my app would use rolling on clutch pressed as drag calibration
    offset it on torque graph
    torque is just force we can calculate drag as torque going oposite side and add graphs together
    ive made some tests mainly in assetto corsa because i could just get a lot of data in short time
    but it should work fine in rl
    but for my use program you showed would be much much better

      You should be able to. VD can't import logs from all software, but most logging software (or logs) should be able to output, or be converted to, a .csv file which is very common. And VD can import .csv files. You may need to edit certain rows or columns of the .csv for VD to read it right (using Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets). Sometimes the tuning software adds an extra row on top, or titles a column weird, but .csv are easy to edit so it's usually a quick fix.

      At the time of this video it wasn't installed yet - but it absolutely can. You just have to alter the "diff ratio" based on what gear you're in, essentially tricking it into using the correct overall ratio. Easy calculation

      You can use a vehicle that's similar to yours (aerodynamically) and then customize that vehicle with your gear ratios, etc. Then once you save it it will show up under "Custom" when you choose your vehicle.

  • @lcq4blackstar

    I know this is old but maybe someone has an answer? I converted a Hondata datalog that was about 15 min total to .csv so I could check this software out, in that log there is a 3rd gear pull to 6500RPM with PSI recorded at 8.9. I couldn't chop just the pull from the log but when uploading the full log to virtual dyno it appears it can pull a run out on its own? (there were multiple pulls in the log), BUT the one it pulled only goes to 5200 and PSI is 5.4, is there a way to target just the beginning and end of the pull I want it to use from the log? I would just cut the pull in Hondata but couldn't do that either. I have Megalogviewer that Is setup for logs of my motorcycle which I haven't use in forever but maybe I can chop the pull from the log with that software? This old datalog has my stock manifold which I'd like to compare with the fabricated one I am currently using.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have a couple options, if the log will open with Mega Log Viewer you can edit the log using the "Search -> Log Editing" feature (not sure if full version is required) then "Export loaded log as..." Back into a .CSV
      Or, take the .CSV file and open it with Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel, then you can delete the unwanted rows and re -save it as a .CSV.

    • @lcq4blackstar

      So I did use google sheets to edit the .CSV file cutting the rows before and after the pull and varified the pull data by the rpm and map values columns, then even saved it to a different location and named it datalog-googlesheets BUT when loaded into the virtual Dyno I still am getting the same dynograph max RPM 5200 max map psi 5.2. the same google sheets file I see 8.9psi at 6493RPM 🤔.

      Yes, but it's a bit more tricky. I might do a write-up on it at some point. You have to film your tachometer and create your own time-vs-rpm .CSV file by hand with the data from a video editor, and import that into VD.
