Good video and tips. In my experience, heating the whole engine case in an oven or on the bbq grill works much better as it retains the heat longer and eliminates the possibility of warping the case half. I heat the case to 325 F. and of course freeze the bearing. Cheers
I pretty much follow the steps that you showed here, except never used an air-con for that job. Just on a side note, bearing protrusion in a housing - same for seals, spacers, washers, shafts etc - is something many do not note down when disassembling parts. It is assumed the new bearing will fit in the space, and many do. But there are some which can make a difference and cause things to not fit properly.🐞
Great info Tom. One observation though. Short exposure to a higher temperature when assembling will not do anything to the bearing. The manufacturer states a not-to exceed OPERATING temperature, meaning RUNNING the bearing at that temperature, which in some cases would compromise the lubrication and reduce assembly clearances. All good info as always Mate!
Good show Tom......again. For anyone interested in a dual fuel torch, Flame King has what LOOKS to be the same torch as the Bernzomatic for about $22 less. I have a Bernzomatic and can't speak on the quality of the Flame King. 👍🍺
Very fun. In canada, labour prices (and taxes) exceed buying a new small engine, so no decent shop here could do it. Furthermore from my experience, engineers design these machines to last the life of the bearings-once they go every other part is also expired. Personally, heating that aluminum/mag case would deform or melt it and chances are that the bearing made the pocket/seat to lose. Awesome vid.
Hey mate, thanks for sharing. I haven’t experienced any of what you’ve said, but ultimately, you have to do what makes you feel most comfortable :) thanks for the kind words!
@@VintageEngineRepairs yeah man, um im asking you now, a 1500$ chain saw got cooked with straight gas(fngood saw dumb user). I say its shot cus the entire machine was overheatedk
No no, you can clean up the cylinder is most cases and put a new piston, rings and small end bearings and it will be fine. Do check the bottom end bearings (crankshaft and big end con-rod too)
Yeah as far as I knew, they stopped selling true MAPP gas a number of years ago, that Map pro is the alternative, but not as hot. I’m not sure, but I do know the bernzomatic ts8000 torch with the flute design is hotter burning than standard propane straight nozzles
The consequences of heating the bearing too much is softening of the material. This leads to more wear, as bearing materials are supposed to have a high hardness.

Thank you sir, you obviously know a lot about your craft
Thanks for the kind words! I know some, but I’m learning something new all the time :)
another great video, Ive been a mechanic for 14 years or so now and its refreshing to see content like this.
Thank you :) it’s much appreciated!
Thanks for the lesson Tom 👍
You’re welcome Bill :)
Wayching from Canada.
Great video. Havent seen anyone else cover this. Thx!!!
You’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
Good advice, I was taught to put the part in an oven to iheat it when installing tight bearings when I was a kid.
Thanks mate :) it’s hard to beat the hot cold method!
That is really great advice. I will hopefully be fixing up some old cut-off saws this summer. You're a bit of a legend mate.
Glad it helped mate 👍
You gave me some advice I'd never considered before- thank you.
You’re welcome :)

Yep spot on, some times there are specific depths to set things :) thanks for watching!
Great vid; this info is useful for moto rebuilders, too. Your presentation and video quality is 👌👌👌
Thank you! Much appreciated :)
Excellent tip Tom 👍
Thanks Nev :)

That’s great to know for some reassurance when installing them mate :) thanks for sharing!
@@VintageEngineRepairs I worked in the Bearing industry for 12 years, nice to know I can use some of the things I learned!
Great video!
Thanks!

Thanks John mate :)
Yes sir 🙂
Excellent Tips Bearing Installation Can’t Be Rushed It’s Very Critical Too Do It Correctly 😊😀👍🏼
So true! Well said :)
Excellent 👍 thank you. Cheers 🥂
MAP gas yellow can much much hotter flame than propane .
Thanks mate :) glad you enjoyed it!
Ha, but today's MAP gas ain't MAP gas, at least in many parts of the world. It's "enhanced propane".

I’d suggest whatever the manual states 👍

Una pregunta maestro por qué los mete al hielo
It cools them so they don’t absorb as much heat from the hot cases :)

Another great video! Out of curiosity, are you on Arboristsite and do you have a hobby of carving wooden spoons?
Thanks for the kind words :) I’m on arb site yes and use to carve spoons! I haven’t for a few years now, but it’s an awesome hobby!!
Tom makes wonderful spoons (I have one!), as well as superb kangaroo leather strops for sharpening carving blades.
@@VintageEngineRepairs I thought so! Turns out we have posted on many of the same threads. I go by thetone on that site.
Thanks for the kind words mate!! :) much appreciated - it’s what I’m doing right now actually - making sharpening systems haha
Awesome :) I’ll keep an eye out!
I’ve never installed crank shaft bearings, if I need to I now can. Cheers Big Dawg....oops Cheers Tom( I saw the shirt)
All good mate! Glad you enjoyed it! Haha yep big dog repairs shirt!
A propane torch with hotter Map gas.
Sadly they don’t sell true MAPP gas anymore. Just map pro.

Yep best not to heat them! 👍🏻
Good video Tom. Thanks 👍
