I wish I've seen your video before putting together my Homelite 4620C. I lost the clip so many times that I was about to give up. I'll follow your advice on my next built. Thanks for tip.
I always dread installing these circlips, as I have had them come loose in two stroke engines on more than one occasion, ruining the piston and the bore, needing a second rebore, two oversizes larger.
I assemble them so that the closed end is away from the notch so that the circlip doesn't come out. When I rebuilt a Honda 4 stroke lawnmower engine last year & that's what I did,I also reused the old circlips which I don't think will fall out too easily. I know that Honda doesn't have any specific instructions for which way the circlip has to face !
Hey, they actually do, they don’t want you aligning the open part of the clip with the notch, they specifically state this. Page 187 of their GX 120-160-200 manual. They show the clip open end up.
Some great advice Tom I have no use because I"ll never tear down a 2 stroke engine not worth the parts and time I have to put into the repair . The return of investment is non existent !
On good equipment, that you own, it is both very rewarding and also a huge cost savings. I have rebuilt two of my Stihl chainsaws and they run like a top.
Thanks Kenny! No, not for a home owner in my opinion, so long as they buy a few extra clips and follow the points I cover here - cost wise, not cheap, but I actually can’t remember! Over $100 Australian. It’s a tool for life though, so if someone rebuilds engines regularly it’s worth it.
Hey Tom, got a question concerning a ms 250 stihl chainsaw. I've broken 4 pawls so far because of kick back when starting. Im almost certain it's firing before crossing tdc which pushes the rotation of the saw in the opposite direction slappin the groves of the fly wheel onto the engaged pawl. When the chainsaw is in the off position I can pull that sucker and it would never damage the pawl. Only happens when I put it on the run position. I've changed the spark plug and removed the flywheel to check the key to make sure it's not sheared. I've also tried different coil gapping to see if it makes a difference, but nothing. One last thing when the saw starts it runs perfectly.
Interesting! It could be the coil has started to fail and is kicking at the wrong time, that’s about all it can really be from here on out. Try replacing it with a good known one. Your local dealer will have a bunch of used good parts out the back you could inquire about!

Great vid Tom! How much is that tool? Is it worth purchasing for the homeowner?

Think you must have seen and heard my problems with these clips Tom. The tool over here in the UK is around £35 - £40
They can be tricky if you don’t know how to do it :) maybe this will help you next time mate!
Got the tool after all my trials and tribulations mate
@@topconker2909 oh haha, for £40 it’s a worth it. Out here it’s the equivalent of about 60-70 from memory!
