Kerry Livgren, who wrote a good majority of the songs, became a Christian in 1979 everything after that had very strong Christian slant. Before that, as he says, he was searching. This particular song is not a Kansas song it is off of Livgren's solo album called Seeds of Change. The original vocals are by Ronnie James Dio.
Noooooo!!! Ronnie James Dio is the absolute original singer of this song written by Kerry! Nothing to do with Steve! Its insane how people make comparison! Dio has no competition! Steve its the original singer of Kansas and that it! This was a solo project of Kerry!
William Price. He really sounds totally fantastic. Until recently I was not aware they were so good and I have been in Kansas for 21 yrs. I know Dust in the Wind though has always been my favorite.
Steffan Pila I prefer the live version from Kansas of "The Mask Of The Great Deceiver." It's slightly more better than the studio version of the "Seeds of Change" album by Kerry Livgren.
Steve is only the original singer of Kansas! This is a solo project of Kerry and Dio being the original singer of the Song! No way in hell does he sings this song like DIO..NEVER!
Steve has always been a great vocalist and keyboardist. Even when Steve got older, he is still good-looking and sexy, but when he was young, he was simply gorgeous and and way too sexy.

Steve Walsh was getting into it. Great voice. Anyone know what led to him and Livgren having a falling out, apart from Kerry becoming a Christian? Was Walsh adamantly opposed to singing these songs?
Bobby Clemente I heard an interview on 96 Rock when they played Atlanta right after the split. They said the lyrics were just too Christian and they didn't want to be known as a Christian band. I remember I wasn't a Christian back then but I still thought that was completely screwed up seeing as how without Livgrens writing they would not have had their biggest hits and would have surely called it quits many years earlier. Heck Livgren was in another band when they asked him to join them. He even named the band! I guess darkness always steals, kills and destroys.
He had to be ready to run during the show, so it seems he was dressed appropriately! Actually, running was and is one of his favourite things to do, so why not when he was "In the Spirit of Things?" Pardon my pun.
Hey Kerrylives, any idea where this was recorded at? I saw them on this tour in Carbondale, IL, which I think was either the night before or the night after the show in Chicago that was recorded for radio broadcast. I'd live to find a recording of the Carbondale show if one exists....

I was used to Dio's voice in this song, but Miracles Out of Nowhere was on MTV (remember them? We just sang along to the lyrics and rocked with the band. Zero cares and taking it all in. Never missed a show of theirs in the 70's in Chicago. One of my all time favorite groups.
well many Songs had a Bible Vibe to them .. that's for sure ..... Even way back ! .. THE WALL is totally a 'Jesus" Faith Song ....... but they weren't a JESUS BAND . not at all .. ;)
LOVE the KANSAS .... Most All of their Stuff is So SO Awesome ! ...... :O MONOLITH is a Fav for an Over all Album ! .
@@cabbey31 I was there from the 70's and they were NEVER a Christian Band .. I don't know where you get that from .. bud . but NO They weren't a Christian band .. like I'd said . Several songs talk about Bible themed things etc .. but Man I NEVER heard KANSAS was a Christian band ...
Kerry Livgren, who wrote a good majority of the songs, became a Christian in 1979 everything after that had very strong Christian slant. Before that, as he says, he was searching. This particular song is not a Kansas song it is off of Livgren's solo album called Seeds of Change. The original vocals are by Ronnie James Dio.
i'm shure most folks are aware by now that ronnie james dio sings a great version of this tune with kerry livgren.
Steve Walsh...one of a kind!
DITTTO..... Steve is one of a kind.
Wish i had energy like these guys do
Sure wish i had his talent. I know there are other great ones but there is something in his voice
Steffan Pila
I prefer the live version from Kansas of "The Mask Of The Great Deceiver." It's slightly more better than the studio version of the "Seeds of Change" album by Kerry Livgren.
I thought the band kerry formed AD was awesome myself. Not much is heard of them.
Love the song, the studio version, Dio, but completely agree with you. Had NO idea Kansas performed this song.
Steve is only the original singer of Kansas! This is a solo project of Kerry and Dio being the original singer of the Song! No way in hell does he sings this song like DIO..NEVER!
i agree....steve was kansas for me
the music reminds me of Jethro Tull's "A" album. great song!
Big DIO shoes to fill on vocals. Steve Walsh is the only one who could, and fits perfectly!
Steve has always been a great vocalist and keyboardist. Even when Steve got older, he is still good-looking and sexy, but when he was young, he was simply gorgeous and and way too sexy.
@billyk34 nailed it... this is a board recording. There is no way this is a bootleg recording from a camcorder. THRILLED to see it on TH-cam tho.
I think the bootleg part was that the video feed was not supposed to be recorded at all, but so glad a KANSAS fan on staff smuggled in a VCR! I assume that was how it was done.
I love the way he dances when he say 's 'HE'S FALLEN, steve walsh at his peak
Phil is the shit! Period! He put the exclamation point on that!
Save Walsh is BEAST MODE!!!
i'm old and i spent the money to see the greats but these guys are off the chain good, the guitars are balanced between lead and rhythm but both rich and kerry are equal in ability steve has more facets than a diamond, he is a genious on the organ, piano, vocals are superior up there with gramm, perry, rodgers, plant man i'm glad they met
I agree. Dio never sang this in a "live" setting. No better concert performer than Walsh at his best.
Ofcource Dio never sang this song live, cause he was in Sabbath and later he formed his band, A live version of Dio singing this song would have blown Steve of the waters!
@@sds4life17 IN HIS PRIME STEVE WALSH WAS FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH,INCLUDING HIS INCREDIBLE KEYBOARD AND CONGAS,HE IS JUST BRILLIANT MUSICIAN AND VOCALIST
@@strattuner Alright we got the idea, take it easy dude
@@itstrivial1522 i'm now taking it easy, thanks for the reminder,i know steve, worked with his dad, first time i saw them rock,i was from 20 feet away,i was 19 and astounded at his prowess on the mic and instruments
Did Kansas play any tracks from Steve's solo album from the same year on this tour?
Yup, You Think You Got It Made, written by Steve and his wife Marie.
Steve Walsh fills up my ears and dazzles my eyes. Funny that he would sing that.
Steve Walsh sang every song with passion and quality..
VisionsAngel ,seriously, you missed out,as so many others, these guys were off the chain good,i have to say,i saw JIMI HENDRIX from twenty feet away,in 1968,i saw JIM Morrison,up close at a closed party where you don't repeat what you saw,but KANSAS was something to bhold in the begining,as far as i'm concerned BEST DAMN CONCERTS I EVER SAW
What a great band !
Thanks!
@@MarkEvanWhite there is too much darkness today. Gotta look for the good I guess in order to keep moving.
@@MarkEvanWhite we need music like this I believe.
The song Steve walked out of the studio on was Crossfire, a really good song that showcased the musicianship of these guys.
Steve Walsh knock this song out of the ballpark I didn't think. Could be equal with this song but Steve Walsh really gave this song Justice.
Walsh must've had a soccer game to get to. :)
Walsh must've had a soccer game to get to,.... Yes, I think the same
He had to be ready to run during the show, so it seems he was dressed appropriately! Actually, running was and is one of his favourite things to do, so why not when he was "In the Spirit of Things?" Pardon my pun.
dougconley you're an a******
Paul Godo At least someone has a sense of humor. :)
hahaha....lol
"With-out the gift of love..."
wonder why i can't find the studio version w/ronnie james dio off the winds of change album anymore
This si the best version of this sound.. Much better voccals
Hey Kerrylives, any idea where this was recorded at? I saw them on this tour in Carbondale, IL, which I think was either the night before or the night after the show in Chicago that was recorded for radio broadcast. I'd live to find a recording of the Carbondale show if one exists....
I believe this was filmed in Houston
I really liked John Elephantes voice for Kansas
Kansas band great 😎
Great for Steve to because I know he wasn't crazy about doing this stuff still really put himself into it. So much better than the studio version .
+charlie50201 sad that Steve walked away as his voice is my favorite. Kerry has been more successful with A.D. and beyond....When Things Get Electric i highly recommend among others...
I was used to Dio's voice in this song, but Miracles Out of Nowhere was on MTV (remember them? That was a TV station that played music videos), so I was perusing some Kansas songs and came across this.
Growing up in the Kansas City area it was mandatory to attend Kansas concerts. Watching these guys grow from great to awesome was quite the privelige. I like the energy of this live performance.
