This is going to run reeeeeeally slow after. I very much recommend turning off indexing, notifications, look up any guide on speeding up Windows. These things just do not have much power.
Since almost all Chromebooks use the same M.2 SSD style drive (on most any brand of Chromebook) it takes all of one screw to change from one drive to another The onloy warning I would give if you want to do it is to make sure you have the correct size drive for the replacement. And I'm not talking about how many GB the replacement drive is but the actual physical size of the drive. Unlike regular desktop or laptop computers the drives are not all the same size and then you just use a drive mounting kit that contains a mounting bracket kit that will adapt the drive to fit in the drive bay size you have. An M.2 SSD just screws directly onto the motherboard and as such must fit the space in the particular model Chromebook you have. It's simple through to find out though just by Googling for the information. I've had several friends purchase an M.2 SSD after seeing how well mine works. They purchase the cheapest SSD they can find on Amazon when they can't install it (because it doesn't fit) they think they have a Chromebook that can't be upgraded. While not every Chromebook can be upgraded, most can.) You will see instructions everywhere for the Acer C720, the first Chromebook I tried to upgrade and then changed the OS on was a Toshiba...and it didn't work. However, after searching Google I found that the same Toshiba Chromebook (except it was the 2015 model 2) worked perfectly. I've tried different OSs and had luck with Windows 7, 10, Linux Mint, Ubuntu. Try out a few OSs and see which one you like the best and runs the best on your system. Just remember the key is to do a little researching on your specific model first. Read and watch a TH-cam video or two. One last thing is to make sure there are drivers available for whichever OS you decide to use.(while all of them aren't necessary, it would be annoying to find what seems to be the perfect OS for your Chromebook won't support the backlit keyboard - which is one of the reasons I wanted that particular Toshib model in the first place. So read up a little, watch a few videos and you should have a good time.
I see that this process is so efficient and that you have found a solution doing your own coreboot, I realize, and I affirm that to work the boot instralaço of windows, and so format the pendriver correctly, as shown in this video.

I feel you. 16GB is barely enough for Windows. I managed to gain at least a gig back by deleting the hibernation file and uninstalling the stock Windows apps though. Luckily there are drivers now too lol.
Dave Bennett true, I actually tried installing the drivers that are the same in this video, enabled test mode and everything and they didn't work 🤷🏼♂️

I used a Thumb drive, and downloaded an ISO file from Microsoft site/for Media Creation Tool. Worked great so I didn't have to use Rufus which I find nothing wrong with it except to me it was more complicated.
When I get to the scripting part for the Chromebook (1:42), it tells me "Unknown or unsupported device (CELES); cannot continue." Is there anyway to get past this? I know that Braswell isn't supposed to be supported, so maybe i just have to wait. But if they is anything else about this that i should know please tell me.
The only problem I see with this is Windows 10 will fill the hard drive rather quickly with all those updates, and you will have a slow clunker soon enough.

He's blaming net neutrality as if net neutrality didn't exist he probably wouldn't be able to watch this video. The problem with his statement tho is that school's can still block websites using their admin access. Or block it using a DNS blocker, which would error if this site was accessed because the DNS won't have a entry for youtube.com or any website they would block. All of these things would probably be legal in the US I think, I don't really know.

i followed all of the steps but my usb isnt working. that rabbit thing shows up after typing in the commands and shutting it down, but the usb doesn't work. Now im stuck., PLEASE HELP!
on my HP Chromebook I took the screw out but it didn't disable the write protect screw. so then i went to the terminal and typed in shell , sudo sh, flashrom --wp-disable. then is disabled my write protect.
@@yootoober0523 One more thing-(I've really done this before) You can literally install programs such as ubuntu by just switching over to developer mode, and NOT messing around with your hardware.
I wish I had found your video first. I wasted so many hours with dual boot systems, crouton and other worthless crap. I just needed to remove that one screw, a few command promos and good to go. I'm now running Linux on a Chromebook! I wouldn't recommend Windows (well, for anything lol) but if you only have a 16 or 32gb chromebook you'll be pretty screwed. Thanks for the great video! I was awake for over 24 hours and was bored, so I did this tutorial but instead installed I linux (GalliumOS). I just sort of guessed most of the steps, and it worked. (I have several licences for windows, just didn't think windows 10 would run too well on 2GB, GalliumOS runs better than ChromOS on the other hand). The bios lock screw in my system was annoying to get out, and i used some needle nose pliers to twist it (ACER C740).
Don't know why you'd wanna try and use windows on a chromebook considering these two things 1. The Standard disk sizes for chromebooks are tiny as hell ranging from a mere 200GB or less, you'd be better off getting a new computer in all 2. The specs for standard issue chromebooks are extremely low-end for nearly all models which as stated before, you're better off buying a whole new computer
If anyone is going to do this Here's a few things I'd reccomend, 1. Get a bigger SSD, 2. Have a program that eliminates spyware and viruses, and 3. "If ram is removable" upgrade the ram.

Linux is a pain to set up, my Brother's trying to set it up on my ASUS Chromebox and it's a right pain he says, although to be fair he works full time and looks after 2 kids, so he struggles for PC time.

This fails to mention that if your max storage is 16GB it will not work, or will work but take up entire hard drive. You need to upgrade your chromebooks SSD. Buy a 42mm SSD its like $60 for 128GB, then you need to install it, and only THEN you can install windows.
A light Linux would be a better choice and the OS would only take up about 8GB. I use Xubuntu in older computers (although I have never attempted to convert a Chromebook), Lubuntu would also be a decent choice. There are other dedicated distros for really old computers but other than installing Puppy Linux once just for kicks I haven't done much with them.
Hi Dave Bennet, I have followed your instructions till the cleaning the disk part. I have made an error where I shut down the laptop instead of typing exit in the command prompt. Now when I turn on the chromebook, it won't read the windows 10 bootable flash drive. What should I do?
Hey Dave, I remember you mentioning that you could revert back to chromeOS, though very tedious. If you wanted to do this, how would you go about doing it? I need chromeOS back, but recovery mode isn't working from my USB stick. No where on your website do you illustrate how to go back to chromeOS (even though you said you would) which is why I'm asking you here
So I cleaned both drives and now it only boots to the UEFI v2.2. I tried to type in BLK1: and work from there but it keeps showing up with an "unknown command" message. Anyone have an idea on what to do from here?

yes, the only thing needed is to remove that one screw. you can put it back in when the install is finished if you want to.

you do know that solid state drives or hard drives remove some space from it. like my 2tb hdd is now 1.8tb because of it, it happens on everything

So I cleaned both drives and now it only boots to the UEFI v2.2. I tried to type in BLK1: and work from there but it keeps showing up with an "unknown command" message. Anyone have an idea on what to do from here?

Wait, at 0:07 how am i going to create a bootable usb using rufus if i only have a chromebook? it's a Windows executable, i'm trying to install windows on my chromebook (Acer chromebook 11 cb3-111-C9K2) but to do that i have to use rufus which is for windows and i only have a chromebook thus rendering this tutorial useless for me!
Edit: i forgot about using a virtual machine
but how do you get a virtual machine on a chromebook
you have to have a windows laptop to download it off of in the first place

install galliumos before you do the tutorial then use WoeUSB to create a bootable windows usb.

Windows will just take up all the disk space and there will be no room for installing anything
