My mom was a marine biologist who worked primarily with plankton and other small critters in oceans. She and her OECD colleagues knew how bad the climate was 25-30 years ago, because the lil critters, in particular in the Northern polar circle couldn't find food because of the warmer water, so the fish were less fatty which meant that polar bears couldn't find the calories they needed. This in turn is why the polar bears have been disappearing/dying off. At least back then they could see this being one of the main reasons for it.
That's around the time they tried to rebrand Climate Change to Climate Crisis. Which didn't stick and seemed to have _pushed_ people away instead, as they felt it was "silly" now. Alas, "crisis" was/is an apt label. 🫤
Just to clarify, the image at 11:35 is not a Giant Pangolin (Smutsia gigantea) but the extinct Giant Asian Pangolin (Manis paleojavanica) which was much bigger than any pangolin alive today. Although the figures for the size and weight Connor gave are correct for the Giant Pangolin, it's just the image that is inaccurate. Love the pod btw!
HOLY when Maya asked what scolopendra cataracta was I said centipede AND I WAS RIGHT because scolo sounded like scoliosis and scoliosis = spine = long back = centipede. I feel like a genius. Subscrobbled.
I would like an episode about animals that were thought to be extinct, but turned out to still exist and animals that went extinct but basically re-evolved themselves, like the aldabra rail! That would be so interesting
Hi Connor, since you've been reading comments I want you to know that the hard work you and Maya and all the folks at Alveus are doing is invaluable, and that the world is made better by you all doing what you do. I've learned so much from Alveus and now from World's Wildest! This is basically my dream podcast. Animals are a life-long special interest of mine and I'm so excited to have my gourd filled with more amazing facts (one really can't have enough, I'm sure you understand).
Nudebranch are amazing, there is one that eats plants, stores the chloroplasts and organelles needed to photosynthesize in its body like leafs, and uses the energy made.
They really are so cool. I was just researching and watching videos on rainbow nudebranchs that hunt tube anemones. They remind me of a real life goodra they are like sea dragons.
An episode on the deep sea would be cool. I think it would be fun if you guys also did an episode on the worlds oldest, like the Nautilus that have existed in our oceans before the dinosaurs and are still swimming around down there
Hi Maya and Conner!! Thanks for making this podcast! You both and the Alveus Team are incredible and have taught me so much about more about wildlife that I had no clue about! 🖤
I love the podcast! Suggestion for the scoring system - if the first person gets it right, they get 2 points, if they get it wrong, they get -1 point, and the second person to guess if the first person is wrong can get 1 point if right and no penalty if wrong. That’s how the scoring system for many different trivia bowls works
Honestly this podcast ignited my love of biology and animal science and now I’m thinking about getting a higher education in those areas. Hope y’all know you’re inspiring people to learn!!
TIL Sandshrew was critically endangered :( But actually, it's interesting to know that's where the design came from. I'd seen the pictures when pangolins gave been mentioned before.. But yea. Honestly, I wonder if a Pokémon-themed streamer charity stream to feature the plight of the pangolin might be a pretty successful thing. Perhaps. They've been talking about getting a pangolin for a while
Hyped that the Whitsunday Hinterland Pelican Spider made it on the pod, I posted it in the discord the other week after I heard about it, am just glad it got talked about tho since it's such a cool species. (Also "Hinterland" is a type of environment typically difficult to navigate, off a coast or river, most Australian wilderness off the coasts are called "blahblah hinterland" hence "Whitsunday Hinterland.")
i never thought i'd get into podcasts, let alone look forward to them but all episodes so far have been so nice and informative so far. thank you for teaching us new things. can't wait for more!
I just watched this episode, the first podcast on this channel, and I can confidently say it's my favorite podcast right now, absolutely loved it! Also, for about a year and a half ago, I started liking bugs and finding out new things about them, so the days when Maya talks about bugs are the greatest days for me, would love episodes about insects!! Once again, love the podcast and the hosts!!😫💖💖
I love, love, love this podcast. It's so nice to rewatch as I'm sculpting. Loe the energy y'all have. Thank you for teaching me new and interesting things! I already can't wait till next week! Thank you, guys,
hi connor 😂 great job to both of you! i love listening to these when im at work, and then later rewatching to wind down at home and see all the crazy creatures ❤️ can’t wait for more episodes!!
once when i was in primary school my friends and i found a really big centipede (we liked digging and finding little guys in the dirt because they're cool). one of my friends tried to pick it up, but i smacked their hand away because i had read once that centipedes could be super venomous and also their bite can really, really hurt. they said that i was being stupid and picked it up anyway, then proceeded to get bitten and had to go to the nurse.
I love the pod! Ordered the wolf merch and Alveus has taught me a lot about animals and how to appreciate nature. If I could give a suggestion, could y’all do an episode on most unique mating rituals? There’s so many animals that use songs, colors, gift giving etc that it would be cool to find some y’all find interesting!
I just want to put this here, I have been enjoying these podcasts so so so much. I hope there will be more, so much more. Try doing World's Oldest, like the most oldest living animal specie that still lives up to today. Also want to know more about shoebill, maybe you guys can feature it sometime in the upcoming episodes. Thank you so much for your efforts especially in your endless researches!!!
Hey peeps Love the pod, little production note/tip/somthing I love to see, When talking about an animal it would to see the picture of sed animal a bit quicker. I found myself listening to Miya and Connor talk about them and wanting see them as they talk/describe them. thanks for the pod🙂⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I really enjoy this podcast so far! I usually listen on the go on spotify, so I usually don't see the pictures of the animals you are talking about. Would it be possible to link the pictures in the shownotes on spotify etc. for audio listeners? Ether way, thank you!
recently found this pod and had fun thinking of ep ideas: World’s smartest, World’s biggest a-holes, World’s ugliest, World’s cutest, World’s stinkiest, World’s horniest
This podcast is making me realize how many rare animal facts I actually know... I'm such a nature nerd lol (edit: learning about that last spider made me way too excited)
Giant Pangolians look like Ankylosaurus and Therizinosaurus combined and smaller of course. The idea for the next episode: smallest and largest prehistoric land, marine and flying and today.
Really enjoying the podcast and watching it develop. The blue sea dragon is one of my favorite animals, up there with Halitrephes maasi. Would be cool to have a combo episode world's smallest/largest that didn't actually focus on the smallest/largest animals but animals that are outliers in their families, like a giant rat (Gambian Pouch Rat which also detects mines) or the dwarf sperm whale.
Casual Geographic has talked about these Kirby slugs and pangolins (and them being the most trafficked after humans) too. I forgot the name but there's an anti trafficking charity where they have photoshoots with pangolin. He also mentioned they perpetually look like they're waiting for their mom to get off the phone lol
Something nice in the commends for connor's sake! (hahahh just kidding- I am SO excited for this podcast whenever there is a new release. I learn so much, it is so fascinating, and you are great presenters)
As an entomologist, I'm convinced this podcast is just a way for Maya to slowly but surely get Connor to love bugs. And I couldn't be happier for it

I only knew it was a centipede due to Coyote Peterson recently doing a live stream where he got 'bitten' by one 😅
I guessed it because centipedes are literally called "scolopendra" in a lot of languages. But your way was more impressive.
