  • Philmont Gear is a series. Watch how I adjust my Philmont backpack gear, over time. This is the final look at my 2019 Philmont gear list as I prepare for Philmont Scout Ranch following our Third shakedown hike... If you are preparing for Philmont, you will realize that getting your gear "right" is a process. Research & then test your gear. Analyze it. Revise it. How can you make it better?
    My base weight is now at 14.86 lbs.
    Here is my Final 2019 Philmont packing list - www.lighterpac...
    Can you hike Philmont with a lightweight backpack setup? Yes, you can! We all want the best experience backpacking. One big piece of that is getting our packs down to a manageable weight. After careful consideration, I was able to make adjustments and eliminate unnecessary items and further lower my pack weight. You can do this too with some careful analysis.

    Just got back from Philmont 2 days ago. I suggest you take insect repellent, if you don’t already have some. Also, they weren’t kidding about colder than normal weather. We were in the south country and couldn’t summit Mt Phillips because of snow.

      We heard the same thing. “You can take insect repellent, but you won’t need it.” WRONG! Mosquitoes were everywhere, even at altitudes over 9000 ft and BIG. I’m sure it is due to the wet weather. Badly has been closed due to snow as well but there looked to be less snow as we were leaving. I’m sure it will be gone by the time you get there.

      Good call. No one had a tick issue that am aware of but you were sure to get some in your bag if you set it down in pine straw.

      Ours was Itinerary 14. ~60 miles in the south. I ope you guys have a lot of room to pack food. The sheer volume you get is crazy. Boxes and boxes of crackers. We even got several boxes of stove top stuffing mix at the start. Hope you guys have as much fun as we did.

    Nice gear set. Jealous. The smart water flip cap will fit on the filter to back flush. Save an ounce leave the plunger.

    My twins and I are doing this year the same trek you did! Watching your videos to get a sense of the trail, thanks for sharing. Wanted to ask if you had to use the solar panel charger, or was the Anker power bank enough to recharge all your devices throughout the 10 days on the trail.

      I used it daily to top off the battery. When we got back to Basecamp it was practically fully charged... If you power needs are minimal. A battery may be enough. Test it out on your shakedown hikes. I was filming and recording GPS tracking so my use is most likely more than average.
      That is an awesome trek. You get to see a lot of different areas... I really thought it was well designed. And it allowed us to ease our way into the hike before it became really challenging.

      I will also mention that there are a lot of similar options that can be had for cheaper. One of the next videos I am working on is specifically for those planning to do philmont on a budget. So watch for that...

      I have been using the Sea to Summit Aeros L for a while now. bit.ly/2sowMDc - I do like it much more than the Snugpak option I used previously.

    Quick question, I'm going to Philmont in August 2020 and I was told that boots were required. I have searched on the Philmont website and it never said that you have to have boots. So I'm just wondering if I could wear trail runners since I prefer them over boots. I will be going as an adult leader if that matters. Thanks in advance.

    • @AndyParrishOutdoors
      @AndyParrishOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can absolutely wear trail runners, I did, and so did my son. Boots are encouraged, because of the loose rock that is common, but not required.

      I took my Canon M50 with an ef-m 22 lens. Peak designs capture clip. A bunch of spare batteries and USB charger. My Samsung s10. Pedco ultra pod. I wish I would have brought my movo shotgun MIC and another lens with image stability for better motion shots.

    I see that you're using a Triplex. I was under the impression that the boys were encouraged to bunk together and the leaders to go solo or bunk together. Did you wind up bunking with a leader or your son?

    • @AndyParrishOutdoors
      @AndyParrishOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We had an odd number of boys. They bunked together and then had one solo tent for the crew leader. The dads decided to bunk together too. We had 4 dads, 2 to a tent.

    • @campchairchris
      @campchairchris 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 2019 Philmont guide states. (P.14) "If you choose to provide your own tent it must be a two-person tent." "Philmont will allow a single person tent in the event of an odd numbered crew". Andy, did they enforce this? I can't imagine anyone seeing your triplex would give you a hard time. Did they enforce or say anything about the only 1 and 2 tent rule?

    • @AndyParrishOutdoors
      @AndyParrishOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@campchairchris It was not a problem. Firstly, the adults didn't really have our gear looked at too closely. Also, I measured the dimensions against the Thunder ridge tents before I left. 88x54 & the Triplex is 90x48. The exteriors are very similar when you add vestibules too. The Triplex always struck me as a 2 person tent unless you wanted to be on top of each other... Many of the ultralight tents seem to be this way. I wanted to save weight but also have some room. We definitely did. It worked out great.

    What was the final price of all your gear?

    • @AndyParrishOutdoors
      @AndyParrishOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure I ever went through everything and tried to total it up... Some things I've had for a while. I will say that this is a very pricey list and took a while to build-up to the final setup. There are many other options that can keep your load toward the lighter end of the range without totally breaking the bank. Always start with your big 3 - Pack, Sleep system, and shelter. If you take Philmont's tent you can cut out a bunch of costs right off the bat. I think my son's kit was just over 20 lbs and I know his gear was a small fraction of what mine cost.
