This is how it used to be for the average middleclass family in 19th century europe.
After all making music yourself at this level at home was the only way to go in the absence of record and playback devices.
I went to school with siblings of a similar Musical family as the Masons.

It's got a way more bright tone than the grand piano, half the time you cant even hear the feckin solo parts in concert performances, but here its right at the top of the texture where it should be - phenomenal:) I love the fact that they all live in the same house, that's exactly how music should be.

This is really fun to listen to. It sounds quite a bit like I imagine the actual chamber music would have sounded in 1810... less than perfect pianos, very thin but well played orchestration, two pianos, etc. It would be fun to see more of this approach to quartets and chamber music generally, i.e. bring back The Salon and people actually living and playing such fine music as part of an ongoing communal life.

Even with the missing wind parts, the kettledrums, and of course the strings that give the piece a much richer texture? It’s a concerto not a chamber work. Their effort are admirable in the absence of an actual orchestra as Beethoven originally intended it. The soloist was brilliant though.

“Music expresses wordless odyssey’s.” This is truly very heady stuff indeed; to hear a chamber music version of this watermark concerto by this cosmic family unit of brilliant young musicians. I only wish I were able to give them a huge group hug! One of my favorite proverbs is “the steps of a good man are ordered by The Lord.” I am regularly amazed when He graces me to come upon such inspiration as what I have just enjoyed. How rare to see such gifts of devotion applied with this degree of fervent love. Their parents have the most sparkling legacy possible. When a boy my mother regularly gathered my baby sister and me around the dining room table to sing trios of sacred hymns and gospel songs. So I know somewhat of the joy of release and pure expression in these types of soirées. I love singing more than ever and at age sixty-nine my level of profound delivery and ardent zeal attends my ministry as I pour out my soul to The Lord and receptive hearts. God bless and keep you Kenneth-Mason family! PWG

This sort of music-making en famille of large works arranged for chamber ensemble was how most people in the 19th century would have experienced pieces like this. Although I wish the Kanneh-Mason music room were large enough to host two grand pianos, the jingly timbre of the upright is not unlike the sound of pianos in Beethoven's time.

I felt like i was going back in time to those days in 8th-9th centuries, when it was common to have music education as a part of social skills in society and friends and families had these kind of playings together. Beethoven also played with his friends and there is that feeling and intimacy on these kind of performances. Imagine being there and listening live: It's special, it's private, it's rare and you can feel to be part of music. You will never get that feeling in a concert hall. Bravo!
