This is such a resonable video. Why do most people think the game is either the second coming of Christ or absolute garbage? There is a middleground internet...
Sneez Space noodle the middle ground was often annihilated by the fandom. So when the fandom was forcing their ideals onto people who were neutral about the game, their opinion worsened over time.
The entire section of the video from 5:23 to 6:06 pretty much summarizes exactly what Flowey talks about in the Genocide Route. "Sets of number, lines of dialogue. Once you've seen them all, that's it. That's all they are."

@@crazedrambling16 yes it is! Deltarune is actually technically an AU (alternate universe) of undertale, it was just made by toby fox so its considered official.
I call them a different thing entirely from the UnderTale community. Really I don't like most AU's because they were not to inspire the mind, but to just make an "OC". I am easily annoyed by those who always have to be stronger or more powerful than everything else. What I look for is creativity, see how far they can go while keeping the true spirit of the tree it came from.

@@smhgamersgamers7813 oh I get it now... truthfully I'm alittle disappointed in myself for not realising what he was taking about tbh (I had already seen abunch of videos about yandere dev)
It’s not, though. The game’s feel and sense of humor were partially inspired by Earthbound. Toby Fox himself has expressed this. You don’t have to make every comparison between UT and EB a Sans is Ness reference.
While a lot of his complaints seem like they miss the point of Undertale, I kinda understand where he's coming from, and how to fix it, with a very simple change: make the graphics better. I know (and enjoy) that the graphics are more of a meta thing than an actual lack of talent. But while some things work really well in connecting the *player* to the story rather than a character that you play (the save/load stuff, certain characters remembering what you did), if the rest of it felt and looked more like a living world, I don't think he would be complaining as much about how the game wasn't acting like a game. Basically, if the entire game was around the same graphical quality of the Deltarune Dark World. This is mostly what I think would make HIM like the game better, and what a lot of people would enjoy the most. I still like the janky graphics and weird aesthetic just as much as I would have liked a more fleshed out 16-bit graphical world.
@@allenholloway5109 That has nothing to do with anything. The problem you psychopats seem to ignore is that if you kill a single monster in Undertale, it was in self defense considering pretty much all monsters attack you if you do nothing against them

@@lollol6978 not really, some bosses can be spared before they even attacks, you can always flee from battles, the game dosen't really treat you as a monster in the natural route unless you really went too far, and that is noticed by the dialogue from sans in the judgement hall which changes based on your LOVE, same with the dialogues you get after finishing the route
i know this comment is 3 years old but whatever, the point isnt to say "violence bad, pacifist good!" in undertale you can canonicly save and load, its saying that if you have this power, why not use it for good, to quote undyne "you didn't kill them cause you had to, you killed them cause it was easy for you"
Nope. The "Steven Universe is Sans" theory is mostly a joke created by Redditors (I believe, don't quote me on that) to make fun of MatPat's "Sans is Ness" theory (in which he states multiple times he knows it's silly and a stretch, but wanted an excuse to talk about Earthbound and its connections to Undertale because they're two of his favorite things).
whenever people talk about how bad sonic or undertale is, they usually only talk about the fandom. The fandom doesn't make the game.I'm glad someone is actually pointing out the mistakes.
Opposite of FaZe no, generally with Sonic they do talk about the game. It’s just weather or not they can back up the statement with something that isn’t “3D Sonic suck.”
To be entirely fair to those "3D sonic suck", a majority of the time those are the games that become so glitchy to the point where they're unplayable. Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic '06, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Adventures being PRIME examples of games where progression can be entirely halted by bugs. I'm someone who can enjoy a sonic game, but I genuinely do not believe they're good games.
Sonic is pretty bad from a gameplay perspective too lol. I don’t just mean 06 either. I never liked the first game. It’s a game that is about going fast but actively discourages it when you’re going through a level. I don’t mean obstacles either, there’s points where you need to slow down and you don’t want to. Sonic Mania might be good, but I haven’t played it, but generally sonic is p shit from the games to the fan base. They’re pretty even in just how terrible they are, notably the recent games vs the fandom.

@Hayden H What happened then? Did the game actually let you do it or were you out of the pacifist route for good? Because I agree with Scott that learning from your mistakes should be a viable solution in the game. I don't think it's NECESSARY (the game wants to talk about themes of pacifism, not redemption, and not every game has to touch every subject ever), but it'd be an improvement. And if going back, ergo, sacrificing your game progress, allows you to fix your mistake, then I feel it's a decent enough approach to the theme itself. It does allow you to regret and fix your crimes after all.

9:26 I know this is more of a joke but I want to inform people about this so there's no confusion. A backer on Kickstarter for the game (Samael) did the tier where you put a character in the game (like Muffet), and Toby was fine with it and they had fun designing it. Later people found out it was based on his existing oc which liked a thing that people harassed him about (Fat fetish basically). He felt attacked and hurt by this and felt like his character was hidden away like sweeping something under the rug (wasn't even in the credits). After him posting his response on Twitter and Tumblr him and Toby talked it out and they feels better about it. Just wanted to say this not so people can look at that and go "OHH CRINGY FAN HAHA" but to go with the morals of the game and love and respect people no matter what they like or who they are.
The thing is... He was a fat fetishist yes, but he very much put that aside when designing the character. In this case, yes people should actually separate the creator from the creation
I mean, if you are going to ask someone famous to make YOUR OC REAL, you should expect some backlash. Also, both secret enemies are.... well secret. Hell, the oc even had a timeslot so you knew when to find him.
He also donated like 1000 dollars or something ridiculous. But yeah, the actual requirements to encounter the character are so specific and tedious, that you HAVE to search it out.
That's the thing. We need to realize that Samael's a human being just like any of us (despite maybe identifying with his Fursona) that genuinely meant no harm with his character. Could he have been more creative outside of a self-insert? Sure! But does that justify the harassment and depression he had to go through? Not at all. I highly recommend reading his blog posts regarding the backlash. It really puts into perspective how terrible people can treat you when they find out about your quirks. You can think he's weird or cringy, but I really don't agree with the comments attacking who he is as a person.

Eh, I feel like some people get stuck in the mindset that the Pacifist and Genocide routes are the only goals. When you lose sight of the journey only to hyperfocus on the ending, you never notice the roses along the way. Personally, my favorite parts of the game were actually the *Neutral* routes. Just seeing how certain characters face the loss of their comrades, how the monsters around you respond to this, and how the kingdom as a whole ends up with and without certain characters in the aftermath of your romp/death march. Undertale isn't the game where you _don't_ kill anything, or the game where you _have to_ kill everything. It's the game where you _don't have to_ kill, but you *can.* At least, that perspective is what gave me the most enjoyment.
Robert Blanchard I agree. Personally I liked the Undyne becoming Queen ending. I always felt Asgore while not wanting to harm others, he still did his best for the happiness of his kingdom. Characters with responsibility they feel they must upheld are always my favorites. Which is why I felt conflicted about Toriel. On one hand I pitied her for her loss, but also kinda disliked her. She’s always made it seem like Asgore is a terrible person for doing what he did in the game, but Toriel ran away from all of what he was doing. I love the conflict between them, but I felt her and the fanbase were being way to harsh and hypocritical towards Asgore. Seeing their interaction in the pacifist run didn’t sit well with me. Having almost all monsterkind behind Undyne tell her to shove it was both a wonderful yet sad moment. I don’t hate Toriel, but I find her ideals in the monster’s society unwanted. Especially considering in some endings Toriel takes over after everything is over and imposes her ideals on everyone. A human came in and left. The souls were all gone as well. All the hope Asgore built up was crumbled. And Toriel came in like “It’s okay this is our home, we can do this as a family.” Monsterkind would not appreciate that, especially in the Queen Undyne ending. Would’ve loved to see some kind of revolt in the end. The society itself interested me more than most of the characters.
@@SocraticMayhem Yeah, I feel like Asgore gets too much flak too. I mean, we can't say with any certainty at all that the other humans were peaceful. If they had killed monsters, as implied by the empty gun and the dusty tutu, why wouldn't monsterkind, the royal guard, and the king retaliate? Toriel means well, but she's hardly realistic when it comes to what's good for the monster kingdom. But that's another reason I like Undertale, the perspectives regarding each character. Is Toriel a reasonable goat-mom or is she too trusting for her own good? Is it good for the lovable Papyrus to follow his human-capturing dreams? Is Undyne a murderer for "beating up" humans, or was she just fulfilling her duty? [Alphys spoilers]? And is Asgore a misguided king with a thirst for revenge or just a pragmatic leader trying to do his best to keep order? [Also other character spoiler] The varying endings and interactions all give insight into different aspects of these characters. What they would do with power, what they would do with _others_ in power, what they would do without Asgore in power, what they would do in the aftermath of Frisk's journey, etc.
I can agree, but it's mostly said that the pacifist run is the "good" ending and that's what you should get. Even the game itself advises this to you from Sans himself saying "you're gonna have a bad time". Gonna be honest though, this is a game that I personally think treats the ending routes like undercooked steak with a shit load of spice. It does nothing to make certain paths enjoyable and forces a lot of morality ideas onto you without it feeling natural. Let the response of the character speak for itself and stop trying to add meta ideas into the plot. It could be considered profound, but it could also be considered pompous.
@@benlink202forever But why should getting any one ending be the end-all-be-all? No game has any replay value if you just have the mindset of "Okay, got the best ending. I'm done now." If you force yourself to go down any given route, of course it feels forced. Choosing to experiment on your own is where that freedom of choice kicks in. This could be anything from trying the different boss combinations of living and dead to just killing Jerry and seeing what happens. Sometimes the "best" option isn't always the one you'll enjoy the most, so why not just have fun with the game?
Robert Blanchard I don't know, beats me. But I don't like certain aspects of the game that's for sure. Not saying its a horrible game, that would be completely devaluing the enjoyment I did have with it. Which is why I agree with you. I guess I did sound harsh when I wrote out that comment though... so....
I'm not really bothered by the Undertale fandom. Yeah, there's plenty of cringe, but EVERY fandom has at least SOME cringe. If you refuse to like something because of the other people that like it, you won't end up liking ANYTHING.
Agree, I keep my distance from the bad side of the fandom- *cough* sans (and now Lancer) fangirls *cough* but I’m more in the neutral spectrum (I read and write fanfics for crying out loud, of course I’m not part of the good side) but the main thing is- Undertale’s fanbase taught me to respect opinions. Unless they disrespect mine- then I can go ham at them with their opinion-
Yeah... the fandom's fine as long as you don't become an Undertale cringe god who secretly loves the cringe + porn. Soooo as long as you don't 'learn' anything from the dirty stuff there's nothing to worry about.
It's really funny how, I love undertale, but I've never actually played it through myself, just watched countless lets plays and bought it to support the creator. Its definitelly a one time play through aside from getting different endings, I just really liked the storytelling, music, and characters I guess. And like why I watch most let's plays, I love seeing how other people react to things. But from a game play side, I cant comment at all. I also wouldn't say this game is shoving the creators morals at you, i always just saw it as a unique idea of thinking about video games in a realistic sense i guess? I dont know, all I know is it never felt preachy to me but that could just be me. All in all great video as always, you did a great job with the animation and jokes in this one, and of course did a great job at showing the flaws in the games I love lol. It was thoroughly entertaining!
I really wish I could go back and _not_ watch all the videos I watched about Undertale, bc I'm right there with you on enjoying it but never playing it. Shortly after I learned about it, I said something along the lines of "oh neat this is pretty cool" and immediately spoiled myself on every last piece of content in the game, thereby ruining the point of me ever actually playing it.
I was one of the few that played the game with little to no spoilers. like literaly everyone i know watched a lets play on it and i feel like this is part of the reason the fandom is cringe but actually when i think about it like me and this other dude where like super cringy about it and started drawing art of it. its actualy the reason i got into drawing n im pretty decent now days.
I like how you pointed out Undertale's flaws without making it out to be 200% perfect, or just complete garbage. Besides the flaws you pointed out, Undertale is a masterpiece, especially in the story and music, but the fandom threw that out the window.
I think undertale's characters are a great aspect of the game to and I personally like the gameplay (but I do wish I didn't have to wait 5 minutes to get a enemy encounter to kill them)
And not forgot the part where 75% items of the games are useless because they are either healing items giving more than 20 hp or unable to get in a genocide route
As a fan of UT... I can completely agree with you. The HP items are... kinda shite outside of pacifist, and the GOOD healing items (Temmie Armour), are locked behind a coin wall, or locked out of the Genocide/Neutral runs completely.
Well, is that not the point of the items? In the world the game sets, these items are just food or other items the monster use each day. So why would they heal you for 50 or 100% instead of being normal items for the mosters that can sometimes be used by you as a means to get through the game? I also feel there is a case to be made that there are enough items out there that do provide you with the heal that you need to get through the game. Even if 60% are not that great, you mostly would buy that item 1 time, use it, find out it's not great and move on, without having to be afraid that you run out of money or feeling cheated by the game. I get that there is a point to make that everything in a videogame should be there to help the player or atleast most items should do that, but I don't think this is true in a heavy metagame filled title like this one, where the items also serve as stroytelling/worldbuilding tools and jokes.
Only thing I disagree is that I feel like this video (and much of the Undertale community) ignores the netural ending. My first playthrough I was playing totally blind and I killed a bunch of people. I Toriel cause I tried to reduce her hp pokemans style, went back for it and flowey chastised me. I killed Undyne. I killed who knows how many monsters. The ending I got didn't really put me as a bad guy, just pretty...well, neutral. So I don't think the game shoves the "no kill" moral that hard. I mean, as in real life, it is better not to go around murdering people. But in the context of the game, getting a neutral ending won't erase your file and send you a letter saying that your Megahitler.
@@KoryLunaa yeah and depending on who all you kill or spare gets different endings in the game there's not just 2 or 3 outcomes but like 3 dozen it's nuts
Garl Vinland if the problem was the game shoving morals down your throat, which was part of Scott's argument, no, he did not address it properly. The game does not chastise you that heavely for killing random monsters. Some characters are more affected than others, which is part of the game's point, but most will treat you normally. So, on a phylosophical/moral standpoint, the neutral ending is different than the pacifist. It is the self preserving, "doing what you must" ending, where you're not a hero, just some kid trying to get out of a bad situation. The pacifist ending is made to expand on the save plot as the neutral one, which is common with "True Endings" all around, but I don't see how that makes them the same. And about a single kill "locking you into a road"...well, technically, killing the first monster locks you"out" of a road, you can still transition into genicide from neutral. Sparing a monster locks you out as much as killing one. And since neutral has a bunch of different sub-endings, you could say that killing certain monster puts you in different paths...which is what choice in a game is. If the problem is that some choices are permanent there is not much to be said, it just how the game is. It isn't a flaw. It's like complaining about soccer saying that you can't throw the ball with your hands. You may not like it, but that's why a lot of people do.
Yes, absolutely. Also, the reason the game punishes you so hard for the genocide route kinda goes with why it's so repetitive and tedious. Because you purposely put the effort into hunting everyone down, even though it takes forever and isn't even that fun, just for the sake of seeing a different ending. Which, from the perspective of the "self aware" characters is super messed up. I do get the argument that it sucks to be punished for playing a game you paid for, and I totally get why that sort of dynamic and overall "message" is not everyone's cup of tea. But I think it kinda misses the point a bit??
Someone: *Dislikes someone else's opinion* Idiots: it's the internets fault, what's that? Someone can dislike your thoughts? Nah, it is the internet, gotta be.
I find it funny how literally every comment I have read on this video is complaining about how bad the fan base is, and not a single triggered fan anywhere in sight. HMMMMMMM.
Scott: "the attacks are just dodging bullets" Me: struggling with the first battle and having broke 3 controllers But. For. Real. This is great and i love it. Love how your not afraid to speak your mind!!
Monsters only killed because they wanted to escape the prison they were wrongfully trap in, and not all monsters actually try to kill you, like Toriel that gives you the option to not fight and go back into the house and live peacfully, and Papyrus that simply tries to capture you and actually just captures you when you're 1 HP. He even offers to give you a hug of acceptence despite the horrible things you've done.
@@skmistress They didn't need to kill anyone as Toriel says. After Chara died one boss monster could walk through the barrier and gather 6 more souls from already dead humans. Papyrus is following orders to hand you over alive so of course he doesn't kill you but he knows you're going to die because of his actions. Toriel is the only monster who isn't trying to kill you or get you killed that you fight.
Undertale is a good game, and I have never understood why the fandom could ruin it for people. The fandom doesn't directly impact the game people. The game is the same, just don't interact with the community.
Tbf there are many people primarily lets players who's experiences have been ruined due to an excessive amount of backseat gaming by lots of people. These weren't people given a choice in meeting "that" side of the fandom but yet still get hurt anyway. Not to mention that people who see the "fans" from a given medium and not like it have every right to assume that the medium they come from (aka Undertale) is the primary reason for this behavior, justified or not it's a total normal and logical conclusion to make.
What made me hate Undertale was the fandom at my SCHOOL two years back. Unfortunately that’s something you can’t just ignore or “cut out”, especially when the fans are the loudest, screechiest people who’s voices pierce through your ears, even when they’re on the other side of the classroom. I have never played Undertale, and I just gave it a chance and am finally starting to play it on the switch, but the fandom really does make me cringe at hearing the name or seeing fanart alone.
it ruins the game for people because the game has bad rep due to the fandom, and when you want to socialize about it or relate to it or etc., you will be lumped in with the fandom.

A lot of the critiques are actually applicable for most of the turn based RPGs.

Yes
whenever people talk about how bad sonic or undertale is, they usually only talk about the fandom.
Neku actually, I’ve come across people say Unleashed and Colours are bad but praise Heroes AND Shadow...
That's just a matter of opinion tbf, all games have flaws, and some flaws bother people more than others.
atleast that's how I see it :P

No. He is cringy as fuck
Guess the “Switch edition” really sparked his anger.
It must've flipped his Switch.

@@cullenlatham2366 the problem there is war crimes. If a soldier kills a civilian then they're shunned for what they did.
[Also other character spoiler]
The varying endings and interactions all give insight into different aspects of these characters.
I guess I did sound harsh when I wrote out that comment though... so....
0:00 fair enough I like Undertale and that is how I would describe the fandom
25 people were thrown into the Bad Bin
Make that 74
I'm not really bothered by the Undertale fandom.
Unless they disrespect mine- then I can go ham at them with their opinion-
I know right people always look on the fandom
I personally dislike Undertale, but I'm a huge fan of Deltarune (Also Ralsei is best boi.)
Yeah... the fandom's fine as long as you don't become an Undertale cringe god who secretly loves the cringe + porn. Soooo as long as you don't 'learn' anything from the dirty stuff there's nothing to worry about.
@@LesbiansMarie what have they done to Lancer?
I can't say it ever got preachy either aside from the characters who antagonize you in the first place.
Same
I really wish I could go back and _not_ watch all the videos I watched about Undertale, bc I'm right there with you on enjoying it but never playing it.
Shortly after I learned about it, I said something along the lines of "oh neat this is pretty cool" and immediately spoiled myself on every last piece of content in the game, thereby ruining the point of me ever actually playing it.
BlueMaroon|Sarah Goran same fam, I just got a copy of undertale a month ago, and it was pirated.
You're forgetting neutral, where a player can have more than 20 life and still get those items.
Yeah he kinda missed it, if u kill 1 monster in the game, the game doesn't instantly call u a bad guy

But I think it kinda misses the point a bit??

it's ironic how the game forgives monsters for killing but throws you into the bad bin for self defense against a creature that attacked you first
True
Forgives monsters? Their punishment is literally being locked underground for what they did
Your able to reset and reload to your hearts content, it’s your responsibility to do the right thing if your unable to die
When games spawn hundreds of talented artists, singers, and programmers but people say the fandom is only 5 year old bitches.
it ruins the game for people because the game has bad rep due to the fandom, and when you want to socialize about it or relate to it or etc., you will be lumped in with the fandom.
That_one_jacob_guy Amen to that.
