Put that ball inside an open SQUARE FRAME. That way when you throw it into a fire, it won't ROLL AWAY, out of the fire. You want the ball to stay INSIDE THE FIRE, not to roll out of the fire and then blow up a distance away from the fire, because that won't put out the fire if the chemicals are dispersed 10 feet away from the fire itself. Plus, the open frame will act as 'handles' the person can grab onto and more easily move the ball around.
I can't see this replacing the fire extinguisher, it requires a throw and it takes time to go off, which means it could bounce or roll away from the preferred spot for it to go off. However, as a concept, this is amazing. I could see something like this in use as a fire PREVENTION system, a sort of replacement for the sprinkler systems currently in use in commercial buildings. Instead of having sprinklers sticking out of the ceiling causing TONS of water damage and flooding issues, simply hanging one of these (perhaps in a different shape and with more extinguishing material) in the middle of the ceiling would be good enough. If a fire gets hot enough, it detonates the Elide and the whole room becomes covered in extinguishing powder and the fire stops. No water damage.

+Renato Paulista This probably works by using CO2 in the ball, which starves the fire of oxygen. Definitely wouldn't get good enough coverage to be useful....and would probably also be deadly to anyone trapped in a fire too...if the lack of oxygen doesn't get them, the resulting smoke cloud will.
I think it’s only going to put out specific types or fires in more confined spaces. It won’t work in a livjng room about to go flashover. But in an electrical cabinet, around a small batery UPS system, things like that, where you might not see or hear the fire right away and it could give you a jump start on battling it. I wouldn’t forego real extinguishers for these.
