It’s to oxygen rich outside. these work as a class a/b extinguisher (if I had to guess) I don’t think you could cool the fuel down enough with these. Or interrupted the chemical reaction enough.

I saw on YT short about this 'new tech' of fire extinguisher balls. Lol. I'm no fire fighter expert. But anyone who watched American Pickers back in the day knows fire extinguisher balls/bombs are actually mid 19th century tech. They just didn't work worth a damn. Any history nerd knows so, so many amazing buildings that would now likely be NHLs(National Historic Landmarks) burned to ash globally in the late 19th century. Due to excessive use of petrol based materials, creosote, and pitch tar, lack of tech like ANSUL & WW systems. Not to mention everyone smoked everywhere.
Now a days Joule Heating is a big silent fire starter. The easiest way to prevent this. Is never carelessly store or discard 9V batteries. Most just throw them in 'The Junk Drawer' I caught a coworker doing this one day and explained to her by doing this she could start what is called a smolder fire. We had some free time, so I told my boss and coworkers to come outside. Imma get Mr Wizard on y'all. I took some steel wool and just barely tapped the 9V and explained Joule Heating as I showed them. To boot I then demonstrated why to be careful with magnesium fire starter blocks. By pouring a big pile of shavings in the fire. Yeah, I'm the kinda guy who keeps a vile of Magnesium shavings in my go bag. Lol.

This isn’t a new idea. They had an extremely similar idea in the 20’s or 30s. And they worked really well. They chemically starved the fire of oxygen to great effect. The only issue is that it starved people of oxygen lol.

I don't think it can totally extinguish the fire specially in large scale,, coz it only remove the oxygen from fire triangle chain " compare to water" and the extreme heat may burn the extinguishing agent ("even if its a fire retardant" ) and the fire may reignite again. mostly if the material can sustain heat and easily burn like wood... however it will be good on extinguishing electrical fire.

Lots of fire safety products have expiration dates ie fire extinguishers, fire sprinklers, smoke detectors and many more it is a extra safety precaution as chemicals can degrade over time.
