Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers encounter passion and tragedy in Kenneth MacMillan's 20th-century ballet masterpiece, screened live around the world and on BP Big Screens on 11 June 2019.
Christopher Saunders (Lord Capulet), Gary Avis (Tybalt), Nicol Edmonds (Paris) and artists of The Royal Ballet perform the Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet.
Kenneth MacMillan's passionate choreography for Romeo and Juliet shows The Royal Ballet at its dramatic finest. Sergey Prokofiev's iconic score provides the basis for the ballet's romantic pas de deux and vibrant crowd scenes, while 16th-century Verona is created by Nicholas Georgiadis's magnificent designs.
In 1965, MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet was given its premiere at Covent Garden by The Royal Ballet and was an immediate success: the first night was met with rapturous applause, which lasted for 40 minutes, and an incredible 43 curtain calls. The title roles were danced by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, although the ballet had been created on Christopher Gable and Lynn Seymour. It has been performed by The Royal Ballet more than four hundred times since, as well as touring the world, and has become a true classic of the 20th-century ballet repertory. - บันเทิง

@@DianaMoon11428 Prokofiev was from Donetsk, the most Russian city in present day Ukraine. Of course, in those days it was in the USSR. Today's war started in Donetsk and Lugansk. They wanted autonomy to be able to speak Russian and veto any attempts to join NATO (not independence), and Kiev didn't accept it. It launched the so called Anti-Terrorist Operation and 14,000 lost their lives, most of them civilians. Then Putin intervened and now Ukraine will be split between Russia and Poland. The remaining part will be smaller than Luxembourg. Geography is destiny and Real Politik triumphs. The end.

There is a memorial of Angels in Donetsk, where these children are buried. Russian Russian language, Russian schools were banned in Ukraine itself, and Russian books were destroyed. And the Russians were offered to go to Russia. The West looked at it indifferently.

A relatively simple dance, but elevated to the next level through costumes, scenery, and acting. It really shows you how important yet often overlooked these elements are to creating a memorable ballet.
The quality of the production is extremely important.
Too often I hear people defending unforgivably shitty productions by saying "but it's the music that matters, isn't it?" Sadly no, when it comes to ballet and opera. They are supposed to be visually as impressive as they are musically. If the production is utter garbage, you can just as well listen to a record. At least you don't lose a part of your soul.
@@WilfredIvanhoe I do agree with you. Some minimalist modern theatre can work on an intellectual level but when opera and ballet appeal to the visual sense as well as to the aural, the effect can be almost overwhelming in pleasure

This is an absolute gem. The haughty demeanor of the knights is terrific. One of Prokoviefs best compositions.
My favourite... and this my favourite video of this ballet, I never get tired of watching it. It is just perfect in every respect.

The music of Sergei Prokofiev is powerful. Great Russian soul at work.
I've been a fan of his music (AND that of Shostakovich) for almost 60 years - and THIS is a masterpiece.
This gives off such an intimidating yet graceful vibe to it.
I think the idea behind this music and choreography is to exemplify the pride and somewhat aggressive attitude of the Capulets. It works really well in this production and if you ever get the chance to see it live I would definitely recommend it!
This piece is one of Prokofiev's masterpieces. The music creeps me out, but I love it!

Never seen male dancers so beautiful, noble, expressive and elegant.
William Shakespeare's genius, being beautifully translated by Prokofiev. All of the drama and all of the despair of both Romeo and Juliet turned into music.
Geniality means likeableness, friendliness. You seek the word genius. When the French use the word genial, they mean outstandingly pleasurable - like geniality, NOT like genius.
Shakespeare's plays often taught multiple lessons, while being careful never to insult the nobility of his own country., as they, too, were often narcissistic and easily insulted.

My god but this is fantastic. As I watched I felt so profoundly grateful to each dancer on stage, who have all dedicated 1000s of hours of their lives to dance in order for me to enjoy such grace and talent that is there in every step.

I love this performance of "Dance of the Knights" better than any other I've seen on YT. The simple yet powerful choreography is just riveting and commanding. Fabulous!!
Prokofiev was a genius; this music is at once elegant and ominous, absolutely perfect for the scene.
This is a simply great fusion of wonderful music, choreography, and costumes. The choreography captures the spirit of the music perfectly. Compare the Nureyev version with the awkward knee raises to that one. This one just has done it right.

The theme is so rich and unusual, Russian. The way it is unusual reminds me of Mussorgsky and Stravinsky.
What I really love about the Royal Ballet is how they don't just send the older dancers away and instead they become teachers of the younger dancers. That way even if they're no longer on stage, their vast knowledge after years of actual dancing doesn't go to waste.

I was introduced to this piece by my school music teacher at the age of 13 some 40+ years ago. I may well have been the only leather jacketed Iron Maiden fan with Prokofiev in his albulm collection.

Finally got to see the dance that goes with the music. Simple but graceful and evocative moves, beautiful costumes. I first heard Dance of the Knights on a car commercial that featured (for some stupid reason) huge metal balls swinging above the cars.
What a treat for this Midsummer's eve! Sumptuous costumes, rousing music, beautiful ladies and handsome knights dancing - fabulous 😀💕💕💕
There's just something about the simplicity of this version that I like more than others. I think it's the feeling it invokes. The look the gentleman in the middle has on his face is just perfect.
