Reminds me of my childhood in the 1450s when there were always buskers at Tyburn gallows entertaining the crowds before a nice execution. We'd buy a bag of roast chestnuts and put them in our pockets to keep our hands warm while we waited for the hangman. You'd never recognise the place today and the hurdy-gurdy man has long since gone.
saw my first hurdy gurdy being played by a busker near Covent Garden in 1982, my first trip to Europe. They vary quite a bit in appearance. i love the sound.
Thrown like a star in my vast sleep I opened my eyes to take a peek To find that I was by the sea Gazing with tranquility 'Twas then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man Came singing songs of love
This intrument is so cool and fun. I can only imagine how baffled someone might look after he asked you if you play any instruments and you whip this badboy out and hit the sickest tunes on earth on it.
in France, however, we don't say exactly "violon avec une roue", but "vielle à roue" it's quite similar, but not exactly the same. The nuance is difficult to express in english
I always imagine that the trompette came from someone who's gurdy bridge broke, and it started buzzing. People liked it once they realized it could be controlled, and then it turned into part of the technique. It seems like a serendipitous thing.
I heard hurdy-gurdy in the lyrics of a song and I came here to educate myself. Thank you for your magnificent teachings and for being so passionate about the arts 💕👏👏👏
If you like the hurdy gurdy so much, you should check out a guy called Guilhem Desq, who has his own solo repertoire, as well as a band he's in called Arcane Alchemists.
The trompette is the string that passes over the "dog" (chien), causing it to vibrate. And your grip on that handle is wrong. Get that elbow in towards you for a start, and relax the arm. For the grip itself: th-cam.com/video/OOBfNPEi9l0/w-d-xo.html
It took us a while, but we got there. The silliest instrument name I've ever heard. Also huge shoutout to "Deer's Antlers", the most aptly-named instrument ever conceived.
The Ugears hurdy gurdy kit has laser cut pieces that interlock together to make a functional, although somewhat thin sounding, instrument that can be played. How well it can be played is open to debate, but it makes somewhat appropriate noises for under $100.
You generally have to have one ordered from a maker, and for most luthiers theres a waiting list of 12 months but theres a Ukrainian maker with a shorter waiting list and a price tag of i think only around €500-600
I have thought when watching hurdy gurdy players that the instrument might possibly be improved by the addition of a small modern bearing for the handle. I know this would not be traditional - but it seems to me that the smoother the rotation of the handle the better the performance.
Very good. I have to be a musician myself. One of the instruments that I play is the Renaissance recorder. Although, I picked that instrument up in 2015. It's very much like the western concert Flute that I play, only, you play it vertically, and it has holes. You hear a lot of that in this group called The Mediaeval Baebes. They're from England. The Heady🏳️🌈 Gurdy is a very interesting instrument. I've never seen one up close, but I've seen many instruments in my time. That includes a kettle drum, a lute, a viola, a violin, an oboe,. I've even seen a piccolo up close. The only instrument I've not seen up close is the saxophone. By the way, I'm totally blind, and as a musician, I have to learn by ear. It's very simple, but it can also be a curse as well. Perfect pitch that is. It's kind of neat how the wood that jumps up when you turn the wheel in England as known as the dog.
As far as I know, the earliest depiction of a trompette on a hurdy-gurdy is in the "Garden of Earthly Delights" by Hieronymus Bosch, around the 15th century.

that thing absolutely does both hurd and gurd. great name.
I don't know why, but there's something I like about this person.
He is at once cheeky and kind - I like his sense of comedic timing while still keeping a gentle tone.
Omg he's in trouble now 😮
I love him. The cutest thing ever

What an interesting musical instrument. It resembles the French "musette de cour" in sound. There is a drone note souding along.
I'm terrible and bowing and don't have good intonation so this is a great way to cheat at violin.

The trumpet is derived from the tromba marina

it's one man band of tavern music.
Also possibly the answer to the question "what if an accordion and a bagpipe had a baby".
You get that question often? Apparently men can have babies now so I guess anythings possible 😊
A great overview, and example for anyone starting there journey with the Hurdy Gurdy.

That, and the intro theme to the Black Sails TV series.
The 0:50 clip nailed it
I wonder how often it needs to be retuned. Does anyone know? Maybe it depends on the string quality etc.

Lowering/increasing the play in the handle/shaft is an additional thing players do to control the sound.

Where and how much to get a decent one?
Is it easy to learn?
Leopold mozart, mozarts father 1719 1787 used the Hurdy Gurdy extensively in his composition peasants wedding march!
Now I want one.
That's 2 if we add up all the times you say this
It seems like such an engineered instrument, it's quite surprising that it would be considered an instrument for the peasantry!
Going a bit too hard on the downward stroke giving resonating feedback in the strings. Given that it's intentionally gives a nice percussion

Well, no, in French, it's called 'vielle à roue'. :)
Can't believe they let Swedish Chef from the Muppets name an instrument
