I know an artist that goes by patty-gurdy I think, she has a few songs and stuff and mainly uses the hurdy-gurdy in them, along with other instruments of course but she plays it
It was designed to play a very specific kind of music, and mostly by itself. It has such a "loud" voice it's hard to make it work with others. Not very versatile, not much of a team player
This young woman is clearly very talented and a wonderful musician. This is evidenced by the fact that she can make such beautiful sounds come out of the 3-way love child of a guitar, a manual meat grinder and a typewriter.
Just wait until you hear that the inside of the instrument is basically almost like an accordion- it doesn’t have a pumping action the same way that the accordion does, not like puffing air by extending and collapsing, but, the similar buzzing sound an accordion creates is made by drone strings and a “pumping” action of the “crank” (the wheel inside). It’s also been likened to bagpipes, instead of an accordion, for how it makes the buzzing sound. The “buzzing bridge” inside makes this sound. And it’s a little more like a violin with how the strings are played inside the instrument when the crank is turned, but it is held similar to a guitar.
@@Lights_of_Silver I don’t think anyone is insinuating that the hurdy gurdy actually comes from these other instruments. People are just comparing it to other instruments people are generally more familiar with. 😅
Would absolutely love to learn it one day. Unfortunately the only guy in like 100 miles who knew how to play it passed away shortly before moved to the place I am now.
I've never heard the hurdygurdy played so well - using different techniques to fully colour the music and so emotional. Great arrangement too.❤ Merry Christmas.
Fantastic arrangement! Really shows off techniques that are unique to the hurdy gurdy - well done. My favorite part starts at 1:50 and then the pattern that starts at 2:00.
That was amazing. At times it gave me Tocata and Fugue vibes which is another piece I love. So different from the sea shanty type pieces I’ve heard played on this brilliant instrument. Thank you so much.
That was a magnificent rendition. I think the hum, drone and echo improved the base spookiness of the song even further. Merry Christmas and all the best wishes 🎄🎁✨
It’s called a drone. Bagpipes have a drone as well. They have different mechanics in play, but the same charm. Or, if one doesn’t care for the reedy background sound, its anti-charm.🙂🙃 (I love the drone especially in the hurdy-gurdy.)
To be even more precise, the buzzing sound is produced by a special kind of drone string known as trompette string. It is tuned higher than the low drone and has a "floating" bridge which jumps when you turn faster and produces the buzz.
I am 54 years old and this is the first time I have seen this instrument it is beyond amazing 👏 and to hear my favorite song play was the absolute perfect end to the Christmas season
❄Thank you for introducing me to such an ethereal instrument ❄ The hurdy-gurdy sounds like an ancient machine working once a gain to sing a song older than everyone listening to it, It's like hearing magic. Happy Holidays!
Beautiful! The Ukrainian composer of this carol was Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych. He was an early 20th century advocate for independence for Ukraine from Russia. Ukraine was annexed by Russia under Catharine the Great in the 18th century. Leontovych was murdered by Soviet agents in 1921, yet his carol lives on and is extremely popular.
One of my Covid projects was to build a hurdy gurdy model out of wood. It doesn’t reeeeeally play, but you can turn the crank, work the keys, and get an awfully scratchy tune from the strings. Anyways, I love this instrument, and it’s always a pleasure to hear someone play one!
Donovan Leitch turned me onto the hurdy gurdy a long time ago, I wonder if I would've ever known what one was without that song. I recently watched an excellent documentary on TH-cam on the history of the hurdy gurdy, pretty cool stuff. 🕊💖🎸
Incredible instrument, hard to believe it is a string instrument. This one is top of the line, you can buy kits but just looking at the directions on how to build it will drive you insane

Very nice...
Your instrument is beautifully haunting is a way. Do you mind if i ask which country the hurdy-gurdy originated from?
You use reverb big time wrong and it sounds very bad.
the hurdy-gurdy does not get enough love in modern society. Thank you for making wonderful music like this.
My pleasure! More is to come! 😊
Fun fact. It didn't get the love it deserved back then either. It was considered a low class instrument. Despite its complexity.
This instrument is absolutely wonderful. And the way this lady is playing ... wowww ... just amazing !

Not sure about this, but what's funny is that this instrument is way older than any of the things you mentioned

@@kathleencove I know, just found the time-line funny and wanted to point out
Carol of the Bells is my all time favourite Christmas song, and I love the hurdy gurdy. Love this.
Funny story, it wasn't originally a Christmas song; it's an old Ukrainian folk tune before that.
@@TheRealSkeletor which is also the best version:)
@TheRealSkeletor but the original is pretty close to being a Christmas song. It's a "shchedrivka" which is a Ukrainian New Year's song
One of my favorite things about the hurdy gurdey is that the clicking of the keys plays a part in the music itself.
Would absolutely love to learn it one day. Unfortunately the only guy in like 100 miles who knew how to play it passed away shortly before moved to the place I am now.
@@toesniffer9452 TH-cam! ❤
Sorry, I found the clicking annoying.
You'll also like the nyckelharpa, then.
The superior version has arrived.
I liked the start especially kinda liked how dark it was, maybe another version with more of that darkness?
I've never heard the hurdygurdy played so well - using different techniques to fully colour the music and so emotional. Great arrangement too.❤ Merry Christmas.

I've always thought carol of the bells sound quite ominous, and the hurdy gurdy "cranks" that up to 11

That was truly amazing to hear. The gurdy's sound definitely compliments this beautiful song. Well played!
That's a beautiful hurdy hurdy. I'm absolutely obsessed with this instrument. Love this rendition

wow, I didn't know hurdy gurdies made that buzzing sound (0:45) , I always thought it was some sort of reed instrument
It’s called a drone. Bagpipes have a drone as well. They have different mechanics in play, but the same charm. Or, if one doesn’t care for the reedy background sound, its anti-charm.🙂🙃 (I love the drone especially in the hurdy-gurdy.)

Sooo awesome. Like baroque heavy metal. I love the release of the crank handle at the very end, it’s like the ultimate mic drop.
