MOVING TO PORTUGAL | Can You Retire There

  • Can you retire moving to Portugal Live 6 months in Portugal over winter escaping the Canadian cold and snow, is it possible as a retired couple to live and retire in Portugal and Canada half the year in each. We are exploring retirement the idea of a long term rental in Portugal as a base to visit Europe and travel more of Portugal. We would not do this until the current travel restrictions have been lifted and we get vaccinated.
Winter time in The Algarve Portugal has a very nice climate and defiantly no snow! We have been traveling to The Algarve Portugal for three years, mainly staying in Albufeira and touring the rest of The Algarve from that base.
Portuguese culture is very nice, the cuisine is outstanding and the general cost of living very low for Europe. English language is popular so you can be understood most of the time.
More and more Canadians and Americans are traveling to Portugal and many have retired totally to Portugal where their retirement income goes further. There are special retirement visas available for foreigners and lower cost health insurance. After 5 years you can apply for permanent residency if you wish. We still want to stay in Canada for 6 months during the summer months so will not fully retire to Portugal.

Sounds like a great plan. Of course thanks to Brexit .... won’t say anything more. The only hurdle I can see is healthcare. My parents were Florida snowbirds for years. I remember them counting the days to make sure they didn’t lose the healthcare in Ontario. It is getting really expensive to get private healthcare coverage now to go to Europe. People over the age of 70 it goes up quite a bit. I am working on my Dutch citizenship as we speak. 🥰🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🍷🍷🍷

I’m now interested in visiting Portugal. I hope you have had an opportunity to visit Atlantic Canada - or that you’ll put that on your list once the restrictions have lifted. Thanks for your videos - you’ve opened my eyes to a few great points.

I didn't quite understand what you're doing with your apartment in Canada because I understood that you rented it in one of your videos. However, in the video about Portugal, you talk about it as if this apartment is your property. That's why I'm a little confused!
Do you only need this apartment because of your rights, e.g., concerning Canadian health insurance?
Then I'm surprised that you can stay in Portugal for six months because the Schengen area only allows you to stay for a maximum of 90 days as a non-European. How does this work?
That would be nice to enlighten me about it because the idea inspires me.
      Many Thanks

@@franknewman3629 I think you are correct thetas why you have not received a response in 2 months! Although I follow This is our retirement as I see it they sub let their apt. in order to rent elsewhere .

This is great news Tin and Norm! Very exciting. We’re putting our retirement plans into play in about a month. I’m 52, almost 53 and my husband is 63. We’re planning to visit Portugal, this Fall or next Spring, depending on COVID restrictions, for our 25th anniversary celebration. You’re so right, live now! You’ve been an inspiration for us so thank you! Keep up the great work. Maybe we’ll see you in Portugal.

Love your idea, because that's the same one that my wife and I are planning now. We always just thought we would do the standard 'snowbird' thing (i.e. spend the Canadian winters in Florida, Arizona, etc.), when we retire (in a few years). But after I took her, and our two girls to Portugal for two weeks in 2015, we started thinking about spending some of our retirement time in Portugal. Your videos have helped us confirm that this is a good plan, and that we don't need to wait until we're both 65. Keep the videos coming, we're enjoying them very much. Cheers.

I think your plan is FANtastic, truly! If I had my health, I would jump at the chance at your dream. I'm always giving my opinion to others, including younger people, that if you have a desire or dream to travel, please do it because you never know when you health is going to fail. I was just in the beginning of my travel journey (about 45yrs old), when my health started to fail but I am so grateful that I at least had a chance to see a bit, before my health became a significant factor. Thanks for sharing, and 'enjoy the ride'. from Ontario Canada

There are warmer places just 3.5 hours of flight from Toronto like Playa Del Carmen in Mexico or Bavaro or Samana in Dominican Republic. Spending 3-4 winter months down there will be cheaper and you will be able to swim in the ocean every day. After all, the weather at winter time is not that pleasant in Southern Europe as it is in the Caribbean.

Hello from BURNS LAKE, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA. I have been watching your videos for a while now and always enjoy. Thank you! This latest video on retiring to Portugal is totally in line with what my hubby and I are considering and working on right now so I was very excited to watch. We are planning for Sept 2022.... giving us time to plan and prepare here and get all our paperwork in order.... all while hoping that by that time COVID-19 will be in our rear view mirror. The pandemic has made us rethink our travel plans as well and having to adjust our plans has been difficult. We had been hoping to go this fall 2021 but feel that things are still just too uncertain so we will wait. It is great to hear of your plans from a fellow Canadian so I look forward to more videos. Stay well!

First of all I have to say you are a very sympatic and self- reflected couple. We are Danish/German and we already realized your plan. We have an apartment in a charming city in Germany and bought an apartment near Lisbon at the silver coast five years ago. We are so happy to have found your channel!! I'm 55, my wife is 48. We are also in Southwestern Ontario. Our goal is 5 years. We visited Portugal in 2018 and fell in love with it. Not only did we find Portugal picturesque, the Portuguese were friendly, we felt safe, there's no snow in Jan/Feb/Mar, the food and wine is fantastic, and it's inexpensive but it is also the gate way to the rest of Europe. We flew from Porto to Madrid (on a Ryan Air seat sale) for 29 Euro, and then went on to France and Italy via Ryan Air, rental car, Italian rail for way less then anybody would guess. Thanks for doing your channel, you have hit on every question we've had about retiring and retiring in the Algarve.

If you choose the Algarve take into account that in the summer a good portion is taken over by many tourists from countries that have mandatory summer off periods and lodging becomes more expensive and scarce. You would do better spending the off season there. I have family ties there and I only go in the off seasons. Fall is probably the best time. Not to hot cheaper to find lodging basically a lot less tourists. Have fun

I've been 'away' a wee while, taking a break and I haven't watched a few of the previous videos so this was quite an eye opener you two! Wow, that's an awesome adventure you'd be embarking on. My dad would say ( an accountant) if you can afford it, if you've answered all your own questions, if you've eliminated negatives, kept an eye on the realities, then do it! whatever my dilemma would have been. You sound like a very sensible couple still daring to dream and make dreams happen. I'm now looking forward to further developments. No need to wish you both wisdom in your decision making- you've done that already. ❤️ 👍 🎥 🌷 🙋‍♀️

I love that idea. We were supposed to travel to Portugal last April but of course our trip was cancelled when COVID arrived.. Like you we have now decided to move as well. We live near Vancouver BC and though we don't receive a lot of snow it is always rainy and gloomy. We hate the dampness so are retiring in the Okanagan Valley about a 5 hour drive from here. It is semi desert and is one of the warmest and sunniest places to live in Canada. I grew up there and can't wait to get back. Good luck. I look forward to watching you in your new adventure.

Good morning Holly ☕️ sorry your trip was cancelled last April, we were lucky we were already there for a month we came back February, but we are missing not being there now. We hear you we don’t like damp and gloomy that’s why we moved from England 29 years ago . Thanks for the Okanagan valley suggestion maybe we could go there for a couple of months over winter if we can’t back to Portugal 🇵🇹.

Good video. It provoked some thoughts to me. We have a little experience with this that might be relevant(?). A lot of Canadians winter in Florida, Arizona or even Mexico for some of the same reasons that you mention. Our parents did this and some of our retired friends do so also. The main consideration is health care that you have already identified. In addition to the Canadian coverage you will probably need to buy additional out of country insurance. If you are relatively healthy this is not exorbitant and works well however as we get older things change. If either of you develop any sort of chronic issue the insurance premiums go up rapidly and continue to do so with each passing year so if you haven't already done so please check into this. Eventually it can become so prohibitive that people have to stop going. Hope it works for you though. Best of luck!

My wife and I love Portugal, so much so we bought a flat in Albufeira during Covid essentially using email and WhatsApp. We love your videos featuring the Algarve towns. You have the spirit. Everything you mention about the accessibility of the rest of Europe from the Algarve is spot on. And the Algarve is absolutely beautiful, the people are fantastic and the lifestyle is amazing. We are not technically retired, but we understand that were not getting any younger and its best to experience the world and make memories now. Keep up the inspiring work.

Hi Cathie These are some great suggestions we will see if we can do something. There are plenty of opportunities for lower cost areas and accommodations. There are a lot of expat residents and there are fun things going on like a Robert Burns supper in January, a carnival in Loule in February. Google The Algarve Daily News, an English Language newspaper has lot of adverts and announcements. Someone above has linked to it. Thanks so much for watching.

Good idea about 6m escape winter in Algarve, home from home. In fact, we have a similar idea, we are now based in the Netherlands, kind of semi-retirement, and considering visiting Algarve every winter since it is a long and cloudy winter in The Netherlands. Due to the pandemic, we have to stay where we are now. Hopefully next winter we can pursue our plan in Portugal.

I’m continuing to enjoy your videos. How does the south coast of Spain compare to Portugal’s Algarve as a winter getaway? Cost? Weather? Accommodations? Activity options, Etc.
We spend winters in Mexico and enjoy it. Great weather. We have the advantage that my wife is Mexican and has a nice home here. But I would love to try some other winter places, especially Europe, Spain, Portugal, Italy or maybe France - maybe try a new place each year for a few years or move about with a month in each spot.
We also looked at the possibility of a 3+ month world cruise during the winter, maybe 2023. Lots of possibilities.
I didn’t retire early but did ramp up the traveling and vacation during my last few years of work. I looked back and by working from 60 to 65, our retirement savings pretty much doubled in value. Makes a world of difference going forward, though the trade off was a delayed full retirement. All the best. Jeff and Gloria

Look into the town/city of Tavira. It is right near the border with Spain. There is a real benefit of driving 5 minutes to Ayemont and doing groceries in Spain. Or a short drive and you are in Seville.... AND as Brits you can have a little taste of home in Gibraltar and still return home to Tavira for dinner.

The language was a barrier , food fantastic and yes close to fly to other countries .Regarding renting an apartment in Canada , it is all good until the landlord wants to sell it or move back in . What a nice couple you are, l gather Portugal is very nice but l have never been. I lived in Spain for 8 years and love to travel. I think your idea is good, because rental leaves you free in a sense. When l had a Spanish house and a UK too l found the running of two places stressful, you have 2 lots of maintenance, two lots of bills, two lots of things to go wrong! In the end l sold the Spanish one. Had l rented it would have been a lot more simple for me, and if l go to Portugal as l plan to l will certainly rent. Good luck with whatever you do. Life is for living, which sadly in the uk we seem to have forgotten!

I am really enjoying your series. I have been a financial advisor for 35 years . I agree I tell clients to always travel in the first 5 - 10 years .I am testing the waters while still running my business . I take 1 month in Arizona and looking at Portugal next year as well . We take 1 month in the summer . Just curious on your budget, an apartment, trailer and 6 months away . Safe & healthy travels All The Best

Your travel plans sound great we haven’t been to Arizona but have travelled extensively since we took early retirement 5 years ago . We do like Portugal 🇵🇹 and been there quite a few times and this year will enjoy our trailer at the Lake.
Hope you are well have a great weekend Cheers 🍷🙂🍺
