Backed the Odin 2 max on August 22, and just got a mail that they sent it out today, so it should be here within the next week. 😍 I really like how the Odin 2 campaign is a huge victory for AYN. From the experience with the "old" Odins we already knew that these folks are capable of building the best emulation devices you could think of at the time, but now they proved that they can do so far quicker than announced.
I'm losing my mind I can't wait till I get mine, I keep watching odin 2 videos over and over. Its the steam deck all over again. This device is going to be so good that I think big players like One Plus and Samsung might make a device to cash in
@@retrotechdad definitely although i cant imagine more improvements since the chipser we have here is pretty much as good as it gets. Not sure if that can be fixed in future firmware but I don't think its bright enough to play outside at all...
Battery life literally sounds too good to be true. You're lucky to get 5 hours emulating 6th gen games on other handhelds. Only potential issue I see is poor emulation accuracy, as this is Android and not PC.
Thank you for your great Review, but i need something to clarify about VRAM 4G Swap, it is safe to turn on? Because i saw a video on youtube about ram swap and in the video said it will shorten the life span your device. Is it true? And if i get the pro model, do i need to turn on ram swap like the base model of ayn odin 2? I need an explanation about this so i can decide which model should i get. Thank you.
Odin 2 is really a new standard for Android Handhelds. AYN really put Retroid and ANBERNIC in a bad position, when they'll have to use high-end chips in order to stay in competition. Both Retroid and ANBERNIC probably wanted to suck some money out of buyers with a minor incremental updates and using low-end Dimensity chips.
It’s funny, I don’t see this as competition for the retroid pocket 2S. I finally pulled the trigger on the 2s because they currently have the 4+128gb model on sale for $99. It plays up to some PS2 and some GameCube. For $99 you just can’t beat that. The Odin 2 on the other hand uses the same quality sticks, d-pad, and triggers, but with everything else being a massive upgrade that puts its gaming power on a different level. One that’s more than 4X the price. For me, I just want to get into some retro handheld emulation that includes N64, PS1, and DC and I need to do it on a zero dollar budget. It’s just where I am with Christmas coming and having kids. So I just sold my 3DS XL to someone on Craigslist an hour ago for $120 and that paid for my RP 2S. I’d love to have an Odin 2 but I’m more of a 32-64 bit kinda guy anyway so it’s a no brainer. The day will come when a more powerful unit like the Odin 2 will be within my price range, but for now, the 2S is my only viable option based on price alone.
I definitely appreciate that AYN went right in and gave us the SD 8 Gen 2. I'm still shocked that we're seeing this flagship chip in a handheld this year.
We got a major crack in the screen, so we ordered a replacement shell which comes with a screen. Do you think the teardown that you went through will mostly cover the necessary work for swapping the shell/screen?
No testing of input lag? Can you please do it? Russ already tested and compared to other devices, and it still have more latency than other android handhelds, but his methodology were super weird, just the comparisons were useful.
@@Drivenby Man, i hate this mentality. I have an retroid pocket 3 plus, which has a lot less lag than the odin,(i measured around 70-90ms on 60fps games) but i can still feel it, tho i found out 100ms is the threshold of acceptable to me for fast games. I also had the odin lite, and it's huge latency was immediately a turn off for me, so much that i never really enjoyed playing on it and ended up selling it. I play mostly fps games on PC at 144hz, with around 35ms of latency, so i'm much more sensible to latency than the average person. Now considering the Russ testing, which showed the odin 2 has a 33% increase in latency (89 to 119) compared to the rp3plus, that has around 75ms of lag according to my testings, it's barely in the acceptable range (100ms). Also, i can't trust blindly it's testing, his methodology is very wrong, the only thing we can somewhat extract from his testing is that the odin 2 has higher than average latency.
Now take in consideration that some emulators have higher latency than others. Dolphin is the best emulator latency wise and aethersx2 is one of the worst, ppsspp also has a lot of added latency, now if the trend of 33% higher latency continues across all emulators, most games will go from 120ms(most ps2 and psp games has around this) to 160ms, absolutely not fine.
@@leonardomatheus1888 sorry man. I cannot feel it. You are not going to be playing any competitive shooters on this (or at least you shouldnt) . For the games I play it has been perfect. I also have a 144hz GSYNC display on my pc but my expectations when playing BF2042 vs playing on an android based emulation device are not the same. Perhaps you could get an ROG ally (120hz) or a lenovo legion go (144hz) to play retro games on . Perhaps that will satisfy your input latency desires.
Thermal PAD on the heatsink? Do you know what the thickness of that is? I wonder if it's thin enough to be replaced with a thermal paste or even PTM7950 for even better cooling performance
I was going to buy a red magic 8s pro, but this product totally changes things. And I highly doubt that the price will increase because it competes with other consoles.
@retrotechdad So I opened mine up just to see what's up, but the heatsink on my base unit is almost impossible to remove because there are 2 plastic tabs above the heat exhaust and it's basically lodged in there. after wiggling it for around 15 minutes or so, somehow physics bent and realities washed away and I was able to pull it out, but I can't for the life of me replicate it. Your unit doesn't seem like it has those tabs and allowing the heatsink to come off easily!
Hi, I see that the device has both bluetooth 5.3 and snap dragon 8 gen 2. Does this device support adaptx lossless codec for hifi audio? If so this could also be a very capable DAP for audiophile gamers with the right bluetooth amplifier
Really on the fence to change my order to the max. I ordered the pro, but I really don’t know if I have value for the max. I’m going to play up to the Wii at best. But mostly it’s below or Microsoft gamepass. Should I upgrade to the max?
No, I think the Pro will be more than enough for you based on your use case. The model in this video is the pro one and it handles Wii emulation very well. 🙏
@@retrotechdad thanks for the fast reply. Yeah I thought so, but people are talking about future proofing and yuzu being a ram eater. But I genuinely believe with time yuzu will get better with memory. Also maybe, maybe I’ll play switch, but that’s maybe 1 or 2 games like Mario kart. Can the pro handle that? Again thanks for the fast reply
Yes, Mario Kart 8 works great with the Pro model. I've got footage of that one in this video 37:14 I've been doing tons of Switch emulation this year with the Red Magic 8 Pro and my model had 12GB of RAM, so it should serve you very well.
My fan did not work from the first day. Tried everything I could without removing the back (though I am not afraid, I am just traveling cause of Christmas and have not my tooling): tapping, using a can of compressed air to force the fan to spin, set up high performance and fan to max...etc. All I can hear is a clicking sound but the fan does not seem to move (I can actually can see it still thorugh the vent inlet holes). That clicking sound seems to be electric sound, which suggest that the fan is short-circuited... Once I am able to remove the back I will be able to diagnose it properly! Also contacted AYN and waiting for their answer...any suggestions?
The XR2 Gen 2 is based on the SD 8 Gen 2 but it's not as powerful (less cores/lower clock speeds). I talked about it in my Quest 3 video here. 🙏 th-cam.com/video/bVGMSCmXh2U/w-d-xo.html
Friendly Tip : DO NOT buy the white version Odin 2. The plastic quality is bad and absorbs everything that it touches that is a different color. Mine became red after swiping the screen with a microfiber cloth used for glasses. So I tried that same cloth of a white ps5 controller...and it did leave some red color as well, but it was super easily wiped off with an alcohol wipe....but on the Odin 2, its IMPOSSIBLE to clean, I tried alcohol wipe, even toothpaste and ended up damaging the shell finish even more, but the red stains didnt come out. I regret not buying the black model. I paid so much money to have the Max model too, and now after 2 weeks it looks like crap.
Damn, that sucks to hear. My white model is holding up really well, but it's definitely something good to be mindful of and I appreciate you sharing here. 🙏 I actually backed the clear blue and I prefer the way the white looks, it's pretty sleek.
@@retrotechdad I managed to clean 90% of it with one of those Cleaning Sponge Erasers...it's the only thing that worked. But a good idea is to stay away from using colored cloths to clean the screen on the white model
I never buy white devices period. They almost always tend to stain easily. Even my rog ally started to discolor a little. Over the years it will only get worse
Great video! I know it may not matter too a lot of people but there is one android game in particular that I play that has me worried about something. That game is Call of Duty mobile. I don’t know if you have done any testing with it but my concern is that even tho it has key mapping capabilities, that is not a direct replace for controller play. With that being said I own a Logitech G Cloud and found that when opening the game it doesn’t recognize the handheld as a controller, I was able to come up with a work around that was suggested on Reddit that if you Bluetooth connect a PS4 controller to the console the app recognizes that there is a controller connected and it allows me to use the console controls as what I set it as. Where I don’t understand why it doesn’t recognize it on these devices but yet on my RG505 it does after the gamma squeeze install. Do you know if this is the same on this handheld?
This is a fantastic question! I went ahead and checked out CoD Mobile for you and I can't get it to detect the built-in controls even after messing around with a few settings. The weird thing is that it will show as connected in-game in the control settings. I believe with GammaOS, I remember Gamma saying he "tricked" the device to be seen as a bluetooth controller. I'll have to ask him to confirm.
Speaking of emulators needing to mature... Even with the 8 Gen 2, the Star Wars Rogue Leader GC games still has issues despite the extra horsepower. Dolphin runs everything else very nicely and so hopefully future versions will help. I just wanted to let others know that these games use the GC hardware in interesting ways and so you may be disappointed by stutters for these titles.
I got to say I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of issues with the battery charging I already got a refurbished device due to the Odin 2 pro not working anymore and I had to pay customs and DHL (shit courier) all over again.
I want to play retro console as far as gc, dc, ps2...other systems work fine..some ps2 are a bit sluggish..most run fine though. Does Odin 2 run most switch games fine?
Did you order/back an Odin 2 and if you've received it, what are your impressions?

No, but you can add a micro SD card to expand storage! 🙏
great video, nicely detailed, really in depth.
Let's go Dad!!!!! Stubbs ❤
Love ya, Stubbs! Thank you for coming by 🙏
F yeah!!!! Great video
Thank you, it really means a lot to me! 🤗
The white color really surprised me with how clean it looks
Battery life literally sounds too good to be true. You're lucky to get 5 hours emulating 6th gen games on other handhelds. Only potential issue I see is poor emulation accuracy, as this is Android and not PC.
it's fine, lasts really long. switch battery life is about the same as the sd oled.
RP2S is a great buy, I love it! 🤗
could you try put a high quality thermal paste and test how it's performance
That would be interesting to test out!
Awesome looking thumbnail!
Amazing review as always
Thank you, Aish! I always appreciate when you stop by 🙏
@@retrotechdad wouldn't miss it
We got a major crack in the screen, so we ordered a replacement shell which comes with a screen. Do you think the teardown that you went through will mostly cover the necessary work for swapping the shell/screen?
get a screen protector too!
No testing of input lag?
Can you please do it? Russ already tested and compared to other devices, and it still have more latency than other android handhelds, but his methodology were super weird, just the comparisons were useful.
I know ayn update the odin 2 and there is less input lag than at begining but i'm not sure.
I have an Odin 2. I dont notice any input lag. Unless you are planning to play super Mario rom hacks you'll be fine.
Great vid cheers dude.
Thank you so much, it's really appreciated! 🙏
Are the face buttons the same as Odin 1? I am wondering if my Sakura Retro Modding PSX buttons for Odin 1 will work in the Odin 2..
I was going to buy a red magic 8s pro, but this product totally changes things.
And I highly doubt that the price will increase because it competes with other consoles.
wow, didnt realize this is a 51min vid, 🤯
moar liek 69
@retrotechdad So I opened mine up just to see what's up, but the heatsink on my base unit is almost impossible to remove because there are 2 plastic tabs above the heat exhaust and it's basically lodged in there. after wiggling it for around 15 minutes or so, somehow physics bent and realities washed away and I was able to pull it out, but I can't for the life of me replicate it. Your unit doesn't seem like it has those tabs and allowing the heatsink to come off easily!
Great review.
Thank you so much! 😊 🙏

Hi, I see that the device has both bluetooth 5.3 and snap dragon 8 gen 2. Does this device support adaptx lossless codec for hifi audio? If so this could also be a very capable DAP for audiophile gamers with the right bluetooth amplifier
Does the Odin 2 has the power to powered the monitor, or your mintor has a separate alimentation ? thanks
black pcb looks so good
Really on the fence to change my order to the max.
I've got footage of that one in this video 37:14
I've been doing tons of Switch emulation this year with the Red Magic 8 Pro and my model had 12GB of RAM, so it should serve you very well.
@@cabobrenow you no longer have to worry about yuzu
Send it back to AYN.
@@-BarathKumarS Nah, fixed it myself. Broken PCB connector, that was the issue.
Brother would you tell me how did you have this review unit? And where did you get their contact info?

Does Odin 2 has two vibration motor and Odin mini has only one vibration motor?
tira as medidas da pelicula ai por favor , vou pedir pra fazer uma de hidrogel
How does it compare to the xr2 gen 2 on the quest 3
The XR2 Gen 2 is based on the SD 8 Gen 2 but it's not as powerful (less cores/lower clock speeds). I talked about it in my Quest 3 video here. 🙏 th-cam.com/video/bVGMSCmXh2U/w-d-xo.html
What is the memory used for storage?
Does it have an sdcard slot?
It does have a micro SD slot for expandable storage.
I actually backed the clear blue and I prefer the way the white looks, it's pretty sleek.
Maybe just a dirty person? Mine is fine after several months
Loco Roco & Katamari ❤️
One of my favorite PSP games and one of my favorite series. 🔥💗
@@retrotechdad awesome!!!! Your the man!
Gamma tricks CoD mobile to recognize the controls as a Bluetooth controller
Speaking of emulators needing to mature... Even with the 8 Gen 2, the Star Wars Rogue Leader GC games still has issues despite the extra horsepower. Dolphin runs everything else very nicely and so hopefully future versions will help. I just wanted to let others know that these games use the GC hardware in interesting ways and so you may be disappointed by stutters for these titles.
but that's how the emulator works FYI,the stutters are because of shader cache which is how the emulator works itself same goes for yuzu.
do any of these modern handhelds have the ability to use peripherals when docked/tv-out, like a guncon for ps1/2?
Depends on the emulator
I got to say I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of issues with the battery charging I already got a refurbished device due to the Odin 2 pro not working anymore and I had to pay customs and DHL (shit courier) all over again.
it's sad to see the face buttons are uniquely keyed, was planning to take it apart and changing it into xbox layout.
Yea, it's a bummer for sure. 😭
two things i don't like are screen size 6" is too small, and the type of screen isn't OLED 120Htz.
I have Odin Pro..should I upgrade to Odin 2?
It really depends on what you’re planning on playing with it
I want to play retro console as far as gc, dc, ps2...other systems work fine..some ps2 are a bit sluggish..most run fine though. Does Odin 2 run most switch games fine?
Does anyone find the screen hurting their eyes when bringing down the menu?
We need a Smaller Pocketable Variant of this that is Pocketable and can Make and Receive Phone calls and Texts.......The Ayn Phone
Try android games like Implosion, Death door,Little nightmares mobile, spongbob cosmic shake
Odin Base or Pro on the video please ? Thanks !
The D-Pad looks cramped and maybe a bit too low. How does it feel to play retro games for long periods?
I want to play modern games like fortnite minecraft gta and rdr2. Can it run that? Also can log into my psn account and play other ps4 games?
i already bought one
Did you receive yours?
I saw that the ayn loki is "able" to Run ps3 Games. Is the odyn 2 also able? I cant find any youtubrr who tried ps3
No, the Loki is a Windows based handheld. PS3 emulation is not available for Android currently.
