@Giwrgos Petrou I listen to all metal sub-genres (except some of the more ridiculous ones that somebody made as a joke) and I think this is the best techno song from Finland... maybe ever. Darude - Sandstorm is pretty good, and the EDM part kinda ruins this song, but this song is still a little better I think.

So, in short the song tells the story of a man who after a long arduous week goes to the bar, has a couple (lots) piña coladas and is finally able to let go of his natural (Finnish) shyness and dance. I am from Finland, love this song and relate so hard, even though I would not regularly listen to this kind of stuff. Käärijä refers to the style as party metal, which I think fits.

I read that three weeks before this performance the TV producers of the UMK show flagged that they thought the choreography "lacked Käärijä" ... so - Käärijä not being a dancer - he had to come up with something simple yet visually interesting on the hoof (no pun intended!). And thus was created the _Piggy Train_ (Finnish children's fairground ride ... NOT AT ALL, allegedly, a Dutch horror movie reference) - while the dancers picked up and threw the glitter that was on the floor (nice touch!), the Conga Line / Letkajenkka and the what I'll describe as a Sailor's Jig (because no one else seems to have a name for that pumping arm with the sideways step). All a great, fun spectacle and FAB-U-LOUS 🥳.

Finland frequently send rock songs of various types to ESC, and sometimes do very well with them. In fact even though ESC is normally for much more mainstream pop, two rock songs have won ESC before: "Hard Rock Hallelujah" by Lordi for Finland in 2006, and "Zitti E Buoni" by Måneskin for Italy in 2021. Both great songs and well worth a watch.

    • @Garbox80
      @Garbox80 ปีที่แล้ว +8

And with Måneskin, Finland had our second best result ever at 6th. With nu-metalish Blind Channel (they don't think themselves to be nu-metal, but party metal or something... but I say it's quite nu-metalish).
I think ESC needed the refreshment Lordi gave them. After that it started to slowly change and it wasn't just pop (or "art" music for France usually) anymore. The last few years have been great actually, a wide variety of styles (most still pop, but still very different with each other). And mostly great performers too.

And to add background: While Eurovision Song Contest sometimes has songs in it that would work on rock radio, like the winning track by Lordi: Hard Rock Hallelujah that was a very good hard rock song, there's strong camp aspect to it these days and it's a show, not just a song.
And then people in all participating countries, dozens of them, vote and every country has equal amount of votes on the scoreboard.
This means your song needs to have something that entertains people all around the Europe and is catchy enough that people will remember it out of the dozens of contestants, sometimes with only one of two listens.
So like Eric correctly observed, it's quite a different game than songs that have to stay fresh for hundreds of listens.

This Käärikäs specific piece of "art" tells a story about a shy boy, who has done a hard week at work, goes to a bar, has a few drinks, just lets it go and partys through the night untill he passes out 😂

@Giwrgos Petrou lyrics are not flat out bs... and there is literally english subtitles in the videos so it should be quite easy to understand. But somehow in this day and age people dont know how to turn the lyrics on....

    • @Dimens1oner
      @Dimens1oner ปีที่แล้ว

@Giwrgos Petrou not sure why you are so agressive towards me trying to tell you that the lyrics have a much wider and well thought out connections to different things and they are compiled together well in finnish cultural of stereotypically shy people that turn in to wild partiers with alcohol. and as is the story is about a man that would like to be strong as himself and to be able to enjoy things without having to drink first. etc... But you can also just call it bs and then say its good song... thats fine.
it would be good tactic if they would put some of the english subtitles in the show screens imo.

@@Dimens1oner they are ok. The song have been structually put together just fine. Nothing too fancy but it flows nicely. The theme of it is Super gone over in every possible way so ok it might not be bs but it's basically ok, it just simply isn't doing That much. It's written and half presented in pretty much in rap form, with the theme it's not really hard to write a song like that. There is myriad of party rap songs written as good technically or emotion wise, it's basic stuff. In finland making actually witty rap with substance isn't viable in terms of money (there is that rap, people just don't support it or sees it somehow dirty or something, so in last 10 years it has been less and less of it). It's a party song rather than something to enwoke very deep emotions or be many layered in what it is saying. It might not be bs but it's fine, ok. They are not some masterpiece lyrics, many writers who write party songs.. because as I said that's what sells in finland can do lyrics like this with a left-hand. Then if you are in a bigger label artists have time and time again said afterwards how so many songs they put time and effort were not able to be released because the label wanted just that simple funfun or party rap. Perfect example is howTeflon Brothers actually became to be as a joke, then a big thing and they all have very openly said how it was made just to make money and the songs are written in minutes because it's minimal portion of their skillset. All done because the actual solo releases with much more layered and complex lyrics and flow wasn't picked up by others than fin-rap fans. So yeah. That's pretty much how it is.

Rough week and many long days behind
    Fascinating piña colada and track
The evening is still young and time to undo
This icy outer shell is about to be destroyed

I don't think about tomorrow when I grab the glass like
Cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, no
I want to be messed up and free from worries like
Cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, no
And I'll continue until I can't stay in the chair anymore like
A few piña coladas are already behind me
Yet I still have a serious face (yeah, yeah, ye-ye-yeah)
The evening is still young and time to undo
This icy outer shell is about to be destroyed
The dance floor calls me as I'm no longer locked
Like cha cha cha, I'm coming
I hold on to drinks with both hands like
Cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, no
I don't think about tomorrow when I grab the glass like

I want to be messed up and free from worries like

And I'll continue until I can't stay in the chair anymore like
    Now I'm going to dance
    Like cha cha cha
And I'm not afraid of this world
    Like cha cha cha
When I pour champagne all over me
Cha, cha, cha, one eye already squinting
And my speech stutters as the other half takes control
Cha, cha, cha, I'm not the same guy on weekdays
I'm not, but today I am that guy, today I am that guy
    Now I'm going to dance
    Like cha cha cha
And I'm not afraid of this world
    Like cha cha cha
When I pour champagne all over me
    Like cha cha cha

2.- ok lets do this in resignation
    3.- wth am I watching
4.- head movement at melodic transition
    5.- change of body language
6.- little happy smile at the goofiness that follows
7.- full happy smile after "butterfly" transformation
8.- ok can't control my face must control rest of body so it doesn't join in
9.- "I swear that wasnt me having fun but mere visceral reaction to beats and rythm and blah"

Käärijä means something like a roller. He got the nick from his friends for doing online gambling. His favorite band is Rammstein. The pallets on stage refers to a straining job. The dancers symbolizes the alcohol he needs in order to put the workweek behind him and to be able to connect with himself and to have fun on the dance floor. He literately got high on alcohol on the stage and rode with it.

😄I've seen your reactions to Nightwish, Peer Günt and Von Hertzen Brothers, and I have to say, this was pure comedy to see! I could see it in your face you were thinking "what the h..." 😆 I love this song because it has so many elemnts that are not supposed to work together, but they do! Rap, tehcno, rock, pop, you name it, they are all in there! And Käärijä says good bye to the traditional structure of a song! And still it works! BUT. I do understand that understanding the lyrics helps a lot. The story of the song is that on a regular day a Finnish man is very shy and timid, and with alcohol he's able to loosen up. So after a long stressfull week he goes out, has few pina coladas, and let's the stiff facade melt. He becomes this crazy party guy, doing his version of cha cha cha on the dance floor. It's about excepting who you are within and letting it loose.

As 99 Luftballons was actually very poetic, it was art, in it´s amazingly talented guitarist-writers surrealistic anti-war lyrics (and a melody + a voice that almost had the whole 80´s in its heart) this is about DRINKING...erm...and having fun, not caring about tomorrow. So two totally different tales and songs BUT the catchiness and - loving life - is there in both songs.
