    Steps for understanding thirdhand smoke:
    1. Ross explains that the lingering smell left behind by cigarette smokers is actually a form of smoke called thirdhand smoke.
    2. Thirdhand smoke is a residue that contains the chemicals from a cigarette and sticks to any porous surface, including carpeting, drywall, furniture, etc.
    3. Aside from the nuisance of the smell, thirdhand smoke is also as harmful as secondhand smoke; a recent study indicated that children exposed to thirdhand smoke had equal levels of nicotine in their urine as children exposed to secondhand smoke.
    4. To remove the smell and the residue, Mauro suggests that, at a bare minimum, everything needs to be cleaned with a tsp solution. This process includes cleaning the ceilings, the walls, baseboards, floorboards, etc. and then painting over the materials with an alcohol-based paint to seal the building materials.
    5. Ross suggests that cleaning the surfaces may not even be enough. If that thirdhand smoke residue has been on the surface for a long time, then the building materials have absorbed it and they need to be completely replaced, which would require a full gut renovation.

I helped someone fix their recently purchased small house. The previous owner was a heavy smoker. We took out all walls, ceilings and flooring. The place reeked bad, the windows and doors had a yellow coating of the smoke residue. We saved a few wood boards that looked in perfect condition, big mistake. We ripped one to do a repair and that thing smelled absolutely horrendous when going through the table saw, felt like it took at least a tear off my life.

I'm an ex smoker, never smoked inside, always had a "smoking robe" I'd take off when coming back inside, kept my clothes and self clean to minimize the transmission to my kids while I kept trying ALL the things to quit the addiction. My parents were heavy smokers. I'd always hated the smell of a house that had been smoked in, and I had always worried about fabrics, but the insulation behind drywall!! That is a brand new eye-opener! Wow! I rent, so I'm extra glad I've never smoked in any of my rental houses, but it makes me even more worried about a particular house I lived in when my kids were younger. Luckily, the last and current rentals I've lived in were newer houses and have never had smokers living in them. This is scary because in today's cut-throat renting market, rentals are medium term at best, eventually we'll have to move on, and there's no way of guaranteeing the next house will be completely smokefree!

Same here I'm an ex smoker also. I never smoked in the house or car. I would always come in and change clothes and even take a shower to get rid of the smell. I even wore gloves so my hands wouldn't get stained up. But it is still an addiction that most can not conquer. Now I can't even stand to be around it. I would never buy a house, car or anything that was ever smoked in. You have to replace everything to get rid of the smell and at that point why bother, just buy one that hasn't been smoked in.

Going out on the porch to smoke isn't enough to fully save you from this issue either, I've shared new houses with others who always smoked outside but the adjacent living areas acquired the smell permanently. Non-smokers will pick up on the odor even sooner. It's like if you have a dog inside and you think your house doesn't smell like dog but to anyone else it's so obvious.

If all protocol is followed, was than .03% will remain. Sadly, the downside of all of this even with the R&R of the majority of the home is the massive amounts of VOC's that come into play with new building materials which is above safe levels for up to 5 years due to a lack of ventilation unless you call a professional who specializes in removing VOC's...

In all that we've toured, we've smelled, mold, must, mildew, wood smoke and all manners of other things (including the smell from a pot of soup left in the fridge by the foreclosed upon owners of one place) but never have we detected a lingering scent of tobacco smoke. The piles of demo'd drywall and insulation outside STANK. Also had to spray the framing with BIN because the studs were saturated with the smell. Hardwood floors had to come out also. Seems cheaper to DiY replace the sheetrock and insulation, whichnis usually only on thr exterior walls anyway. At about $8 per sheet and and an that would make an average room about $200 to $250 to remediate. Most American homes have 3 bedrooms and four to six common areas plus two bathrooms. I wont include the bathrooms assuming most of them are tiles and easily cleaned without having to gut them. A fair guess is about $2500 for cost of materials. Granted you would be doing this for a couple of months if you work full time and be giving up all of your weekends. Now if the floor is permeable you would need to replace it so that could really add at least double if not triple the cost. And if you want to hire everything out then you are looking at about the same price but I would rather do that and have a new home then just to clean a bunch of old crap for the same price.

DIY the paint and carpet removal and you can do a 2000 sq ft home for less than $10,000. $2,000 to $4,000 for carpet and similar for paint.
