I'm mostly into black metal and industrial, and Chimaira is still my #1 pick for "metal bands that need to come back". Saw them once in 2007 and it was great.
Okay, such an honest an in depth interview. I’ll get to the point and what I got it out of it. It takes sooo much spirit and perseverance to front a metal band. I know as a practitioner at that time and still to this day. Mark, although his (your) vocal tone didn’t totally grab me at the time, really does embody the struggle. Mental health and being an introvert whilst fronting an aggressive band is what very few can pull off. But! Long story short, the pertinent reference to the 80’s BMX movie ‘RAD’ was a diamond moment for me. I thought I was the only metal head who continues to watch that movie with nostalgia and wonderment. I seriously couldn’t believe they (you) mentioned that movie, let alone talked about the ‘forum’. Crüe Jones! forever in our metaphorical tires!!!! This was another fucking great interview, glad yous brought up down again, I had no idea that film existed. Watched it this week and loved it. Fair play Mark and Robb keep these interviews coming they absolutely make my weekend every time.
Hey Robb! Im new to your podcast and I started with this one because I was easily the biggest Chimaira fan I knew and still to this day. Thanks for having Mark on!
I saw Duran Duran about 4 years ago and they were amazing. Hands down as a live act they're up there with the best. I loved the late 80's rap era too with Beasties, Ice-T, Run DMC and Public Enemy along with the metal. Glad Mark is still out there doing stuff - Chimaira are a great band
I've never been much into the Crue, but, anyone with ears has to recognize what an insanely over the top album Dr. Feelgood was. That title track was insane
I Saw Chimairas first show in Dallas Tx at the canyon clup opening for factory 81 , my buddies and i knew who they were , we had copies of in this present darkness ep and we knew it front to back , my buddies and i were up front screaming every word to every song , we were all about em , they closed their set with in this present darkness right after the middle break down before the ending chorus Mark walked over to me leaned over handed me the mic and said if you know the words scream it dude ! Was freakin awesome , you made a defining memory in my life for me Mark , ill never forget it ! Youre awesome bro ! Chimaira FOREVER !!!!!!
Yep!!!! Pass Out changed my outlook on metal, and every record after that, up to The Age of Hell, was a masterpiece, and had a unique sound!! Most underrated/underappreciated band of all time. Glad I'm from Toronto, discovered them super early, and saw them at least 10 times. You need to check Rob Arnold's channel. It's incredible..
Love you guys, this shit keeps me entertained during my lonley nights, been a fan of Chimera and Machine Head for almost 5 years now, wish you all the best in life! Cheers!!!
Now I'm about to go on a Chimaira trip been a while since I've jammed it ... not that it's a bad thing ... really rekindled my love for that time period ... Mark seems like a really nice guy ... this was a good show ... Thanks Rob and Mark ... Nu Metal was actually bad ass I don't care what anyone says ... I miss those days ...
What a rad chat! Love this two metal legends, all of a sudden their stories made me laugh my ass off in a good way, good vibes to them! I miss Chimaira.
I never considered Pass Out, nu metal. It's way heavier than any of those bands at the time. Go listen to Lumps, Severed, Let Go. Detuned, but Chimaira had a unique sound that crushed everyone. Edit: Wrote this comment minutes before Robb says it's heavy as fuck, and definitely not Nu Metal. Andols double bass, Chimaira basically brought back the pinch harmonics.
Agree but as for pinch harmonics there's some not a whole lot they were more of a double kick rhythm Fear Factory style band in beginning then Pantera/ Alice in Chains/ Metallica . Resurrection and The Infection they came into their own .
I did get to see these guys play together during the Ashes of Empires/Impossibility of Reason tour with Trivium opening in Cleveland at the Agora, it was cool cause Chimaira headlined that night cause it was basically a hometown show for them. Everyone fuckin killed it that night.
I miss Mark Hunter so much. Saw him so many times in UK starting with Roadrunner Road rage Tour 2003! Up to when everyone left and he made Crown of Phantoms with Dååth.

Chimaira was my favorite from NWOAHM scene but they aimed too high for their own good. The amount of pressure to become next Slayer, wasted energy on denial of their nu metal past plus Robs ego killed them. The DVD of them making TIOR was painful to watch. However, Chimaira and Resurrection are great records with Resurrection being perfect from start to finish, TIOR was almost great but some unnecessary songs and songwriting choices left it to fall short. Awesome musicians, great punchy wall of sound production.
