I actually have a funny story about how Fatal Frame 2 scared me the most any video game ever has. I was playing FF2 with my friend on Xbox around 15 years ago. It was about midnight. I had gotten to a part where I could explore the dead village and had gotten lost. I came across a bridge that connected between two houses. One of the houses was locked at this time so I was basically lost and didn't know where to go. I took out the camera to look around and see if there was any hints. After about a minute of looking around, my controller shakes violently, a blaring, distorted, low tone becomes nearly deafening loud and suddenly, a ghost of a woman with a twisted neck appeared right in front of me and killed me near instantly (I was low on health). My friend and I screamed. My dad runs out with his gun, scared for our lives. He sees us playing a video game and immediately demands us both to go to bed at this point. Good times lol
My first time playing Fatal Frame I was babysitting my Goddaughter. She was asleep in the crib behind me. I walk into the room with the blinded ghost and she starts making this gurgly little growl (which my husband had kindly taught her). Of course all I hear is this death rattle noise behind me in the dark, and I turn to see her eyes peering above the bumper, ghost-lit by the tv. At that point I'm like Nope. That's it for tonight
I remember pausing this game as a kid because I was too scared and then after some time being paused bloody handprints started pressing on the screen and I had to turn it off immediately
4:30 I think it does in that case. Silent Hill and especially 2 has this sort of confused and mysterious vibe about it all. Like you never know what is real and what is imagined. All the characters are also traumatized and so devoid of life. So them all sounding very confused and unfocused fits with that perfectly.
Rewatching in 2022 (eeyyyyy) and I'm a bit intimidated by the number of comments, so idk if anyone has mentioned this. 3:35 the buddha puzzle? I totally get your reasoning, and I don't blame you. But I feel like I have to defend it? Because the positions relate to the ritual this is about, where the sacrifice is literally torn apart. So if the person is laid out, the blood represents the limbs that are torn off, and it's why it also (mostly) looks like those limbs/parts aren't there. Sorry if this was explained already but seriously there are so many comments and I'm too attention deficit to bother with that. Great video thooo ❤ (Edit: Also, if you look at the blood splatter, it's in the shape of a person spread out. 😬)
There's also much less repetition in the environments. Seriously, if he's already complaining about retreading the same ground over three chapters, he's going to "love" FF3.
Has Halloween come early haha? Was wondering when you'd tackle these games! I enjoy the Fatal Frame series myself. This one is probably my least favorite of the first 4. I tried playing on a PS2 on a monitor and it was like trying to play the game in brail because of the lack of a brightness option. Ended up using an emulator to fix that. Crimson Butterfly is easily the best of the series from what I've played. Would kill for some HD remasters, but I think this series is just kinda lost to time at the moment.
That voice acting is for sure the way it is because native japanese actors were used. I'm guessing, but the slow delivery seems to heavily indicate this being the reason.
What I like about the combat is that you have to face them directly in a first person perspective, it becomes less scary in 3rd person but once you're in first person it's quite scary because you're looking for ghosts through a camera lens where you have a narrow visibility. I thought that was pretty clever
what do you trully mean that you know the director of the game? You mean phisically within twitters and such?..How so are you even going to share it with him and what will you tell him about so? Now we are both intrigueed by such things
@@andrewz4718 The interesting thing is most of the time the normal endings are correct and they are almost always sad. The other endings are alternate happier ones which was an interesting design choice. Love fatal frame!
There's also Moonlight Syndrome and Twilight Syndrome in the PS1, when we talk about early survival horror with more japanese setting. I hope they get fan translated and covered in this channel one day!
The thing I love the most about the old school horror games was the ambiance about them, they environment was always dark. The new ones don’t have that ambiance that much. I just tend to change the brightness on them because I miss that feeling. I just hope we get more horror/scary games in the coming years. Really excited for the reboot of Dead Space
Well I believe in ghosts so I'm gonna ignore that nonsense, but I believe the "Based on a true story" thing is referring to the fact that the mansion is real and the game's mythology is, I think, actual myths and legends surrounding it.
So I haven't seen anyone mentioned it yet, so I'll bring it up. So Miku and Mafuyu are actually descendants of Yae Munakata, previously known as Yae Kurosawa, the younger twin of Sae in Fatal Frame 2. After Yae escaped from the village, she noticed Sae wasn't behind her and went back, but before she entered the village, The Repentance happened that wiped out All God's Village, as well as her memory of it. She felt the connection between her and Sae was severed and broke down crying outside of the Village, but forgot why she was crying when Ryozo Munakata, the apprentice/assistant of Seijiro Makabe, the man who was beaten, lost his right arm, then thrown still alive into the Abyss to quell the Hell's Gate before Sae and Yae's ritual was gonna take place. He took her in from the promise he made with Itsuki, the boy trapped in the Store house in Fatal Frame 2 that did the ritual with his brother to gain Sae and Yae more time to plan their escape as Mitsuki was too weak to escape with Itsuki, to take the sisters away from the village and keep them safe. He hated himself for not being able to find Sae, but did take in Yae, who then he married later on. Ryozo and Yae then moved into Himuro Mansion as Ryozo was doing his research on the mansion, but didn't want to leave his recently fallen ill wife and daughter alone while he did his research. His research progressed quickly, but some time later, while playing Demon Tag, his daughter, Mikoto, was given the Camera by young Kirie, which soon led the the family's death from Yae overusing the camera to where she went insane and then hung herself after 9 days of failing to find Mikoto or her friends that went missing in the woods while playing Demon Tag, where all but she was killed by the spirit Long Arms and she was saved by Young Kirie, and Ryozo, thinking the Mansion was the cause of their death and disappearance, decided he needed to figure out how to fix and end the curse on it. Ryozo used the Blinded mask to unlock the Demon's Mouth, but was instantly grabbed and killed by Kirie. Mikoto was taken in by a family friend nearby, and when she grew up, got married and had Miyuki, who grew up and had Mafuyu and Miku. Long explanation, but hoped this explains some loose ends!

I think it had something to do with the Japanese production team's nickname or something like that? I'm not 100% sure but I read somewhere that it was a nickname that somehow stuck around to be the title.
On our first date, my future wife gave me a copy of Project Zero. She is Japanese and I am American, so we turned the lights in my apartment off and she sat beside me and translated for me while I played. I knew then, that she was a keeper.
I’m also glad that you mentioned this games way of doing tank controls, I also tell myself that this game perfected the mechanic and if modern horror games were to implement tank controls again they should take notes from this. You retold the story very well too, I’m glad because I can recall a time when a random TH-camr flat out wasn’t paying attention or just missed the whole mark 😬
it was kind of based on an urban legend surrounding the story, because there was supposedly a real himuro mansion and the rituals surrounding the family. i would look it up, it's very interesting to read!!
I'm pretty sure the copy of this game I owned was haunted. When I brought it home, I never opened it until the next day when my friend was over. So imagine my surprise when I open the case and it's empty, then my friend pointed to my ps2 saying "Hey, what's that?" To which I see Fatal Frame's disc sitting in my ps2. My immediate reaction was to hurl the case across the room and avoid my copy of the game like the plague.
Hey, man. Really good coverage of these forgotten gems. As for the title changes: "biohazard", "Project Zero", and "Demento" were all trademarked in the west for other things
I had done some research a long time ago. Turns out, the events in the game, what happened in the Himuro Mansion in the game, minus the sacrifice, actually happened in a mountain estate in Japan. Apparently, the head of the household went insane and murdered everyone in that house, then himself. No one knows why this happened.
Favorite TH-camr doing a halloween special on all my favorite horror franchise??? Am i in heaven?! Every year for September and October i replay all the fatal frame games cause i just love them. Glad to see someone giving these games some love
There's something I always wondered about these games. If I recall correctly the description for the camera obscura says something about how using it on ghosts forms a spiritual bond between you and that ghost over time the more photos you take of it. Is there any truth to this? Does it make certain ghosts pursue you if fought frequently?
So happy to see you reviewing my favorite survival horror series! The first game in the series is legit the only horror game I have ever played which I then had trouble sleeping after playing it, so it made me smile when you mentioned how it actually scared you, too. :) Also, if you beat the game on Hard mode, you get a different ending where Mafuyu actually leaves with you, but this "good ending" isn't the canon one.
I love these games, they were my introduction to horror games. I DESPERATELY want them to give Fatal Frame/Zeroshot the Resident Remake treatment and make a high quality remake, addressing some of the issues he mentioned which I do agree with even though I still love the games and don't mind the reading personally (though some things would've been better as more show, less tell I agree).
I've been waiting for years for your Fatal Frame series review. I'm really glad the reviews are here now. I'm gonna watch all 3 in one row. Thank you so much,Nitro Rad!
Super excited to see you finally playing these games! I see you have Fatal Frame 4 on the Wii as well, so that will be cool to see. Fatal Frame 2 also had a complete remake on the Wii, "Deep Crimson Butterfly", which is more in the style of 4. Would be cool if you played that one as well
Im still surprised i havent heard of lost in vivo from nitrorad, that game seems like the perfect type of horror game from his many horror games reviews ive watched. If he havent already, he really should give it a try.
I like all your videos but your horror games one are really the best IMO. It feels as if you're in your element, talking about what's scary and what's not. It looks like its natural for you and I love it.
When it comes time to review "Fatal Frame 2", are you going to include the Wii remake as well? I'm also surprised you didn't mention the XBox version of this game, as well as the endings and how they are obtained. (Dependent on your gameplay difficulty setting, for this one and number two.)
Loved this series! You didn't talk about it, but the game also had random encounters which was always fun. I played the game with my friends watching (and all the lights out in the room) when it was released. I played ahead a bit one day and there's a room with a staircase and when I entered there was a thing bouncing UP the staircase which, once it got to the top, started attacking me (it was a disembodied head). I could never get that bouncing head to show up again. Also, had a ghost jump out of a hole at me after backtracking past the hole at least 6 or 7 times while trying to figure out how to progress. Honestly love this series, it's one of the best.
I think you'll like the later ones much better than the first one. Fatal Frame 3 is my personal favorite and I'm excited to see your thoughts on it. Also, you might want to go back and refresh your self about Miku and her storyline about her mom. It'll make sense once you play 2.
@@bunsmasterbunny Woops! Yes you are correct. I could've sword there was a character in 4 that gave her the camera. But I was wrong. Sorry about that. >
I really like it when Japanese horror games are actually set in Japan, I think that's where their games really shine. I like Japanese folk lore with their weird creepy creatures and ghosts. Fatal frame actually scared the shit out me to the point I had someone else play it while I watched and took a break. I felt real anxiety while playing.
Just a heads up on Fatal Frame 2... The game had a remake on the Wii for Japan and PAL regions only, which is REALLY GOOD. Better gameplay, better atmosphere, and even expanded story moments. I would recommend playing that version, but if you choose to play the original, you should at least address the remake.
I think the part that said it was based on a true story was referring to the urban legend about the sacrifices and that particular mansion. Though there isn't concrete evidence it actually happened I think there is an actual mansion people believe it happened in

The twisted neck woman scared me so much too!! I never really afraid with other ghosts in fatal frame 2. I really love Itsuki, the white haired boy.
Lmaooo your dad went for the gun real quick 😂😂😂
Fatal Frame 1-3 (or only 2 of them) have the chance of spawning ghosts when looking through the camera in places it is not necessary, so yeah:D
Imagine a Fatal Frame game in VR. That would be sick.
To your surprise, Fatal Frame 2 Director's Cut for Xbox was the most close one. It had First-Person mode option through entire story.

A couple of hours ago, I was thinking if he ever did a review for this game. And then this appeared.
NaqimProductions same here. I love Fatal Frame. Hoping that Nintendo localizes the fourth one soon.
I requested this alongside Shadow of the Colossus
@@edwardmajewski434 I wish, but I don't think it's ever gonna happen. Sadly.
NightFox818 I figured that was the case. But I’ll keep on hoping. I mean I thought Seigen Densetsu 3 would never get localized and it has.
My favorite version of the overused "based on a true story" line is the much more accurate "this story though fiction is based on fact".
I remember pausing this game as a kid because I was too scared and then after some time being paused bloody handprints started pressing on the screen and I had to turn it off immediately
You finally got to Fatal Frame, I'm so excited!
4:30
I think it does in that case. Silent Hill and especially 2 has this sort of confused and mysterious vibe about it all. Like you never know what is real and what is imagined. All the characters are also traumatized and so devoid of life. So them all sounding very confused and unfocused fits with that perfectly.
4:41
That was the best top 15 impression I’ve heard ever.
Crimson butterfly is probably the best one in my opinion mostly for the bosses
There's also much less repetition in the environments. Seriously, if he's already complaining about retreading the same ground over three chapters, he's going to "love" FF3.

Thank you. Fatal Frame is my favorite horror franchise.
Ayyy, I was wondering when you’d cover this series 😁
"Schoolgirl Chills" is what I will see in sleep paralysis from now on, thank you very much^^
the (based on a true story) is actually about a Japan urban legend, just saying.
american made japanese urban legend.
Finallyyyyyyyyy! I know the director, I will share with him
Whaaa? o.O???
what do you trully mean that you know the director of the game?
You mean phisically within twitters and such?..How so are you even going to share it with him and what will you tell him about so?
Now we are both intrigueed by such things
If this is true, then its too big of a coincidence

Taking photographs in horror games does seem like a very novel concept.
Just a shame that I generally suck as a photographer.
I freakin LOVED these games. The second one is my favorite.
Ahhh.... my nostalgia.
In case no one's said it. There are multiple endings for every fatal frame nitrorad
Yeah nobody seems to have mentioned this. The good ending is much better.

4:49 I lost it at the Chills reference. XD
Oh so that's the US version's story.
HEAVILY censored.
youre suprised?
Your videos make me feel nostalgic for games I haven't even played
Well I believe in ghosts so I'm gonna ignore that nonsense, but I believe the "Based on a true story" thing is referring to the fact that the mansion is real and the game's mythology is, I think, actual myths and legends surrounding it.
I'm *so* looking forward to all the next vids!
Awesome job, like seriously :
*MORE PEOPLE NEED TO SEE YOU!!* 😢
They're missing out for real.
i love the Fatal frame games! (Project Zero here) Fatal Frame 2 and 3 are just so good games!
Fatal Frame definitely needs a collection of Switch ports, especially the fourth and fifth games.
Tommy Deonauth's Archives if only Nintendo of America would actually localize them, they didn’t look to friendly towards FF4and FF2: Wii edition. They finally localized fatal frame 5 but no physical retail release and hardly any advertising, it seems Nintendo of America has no interest in the series.
Not surprised since they already suck at localizing Mother. :p Sigh. :(

I think it had something to do with the Japanese production team's nickname or something like that? I'm not 100% sure but I read somewhere that it was a nickname that somehow stuck around to be the title.
It could be that the characters 霊 (spirit) and 零 (zero) can both be pronounced "rei".
Dude I was really in the mood for a video from you, and was about to watch/re-watch an old one!
Why not both?
On our first date, my future wife gave me a copy of Project Zero. She is Japanese and I am American, so we turned the lights in my apartment off and she sat beside me and translated for me while I played. I knew then, that she was a keeper.
Review parasite eve 1 and 2. Thank you. Keep up the good work. :)
I'm so happy you covered this game
Yay! I freaking love the original Fatal Frame and it definitely needs more love!
The "Based on a true story" appears too in the pal version, only not on the box, but in the intro scene.
it was kind of based on an urban legend surrounding the story, because there was supposedly a real himuro mansion and the rituals surrounding the family. i would look it up, it's very interesting to read!!
Also, if you beat the game on Hard mode, you get a different ending where Mafuyu actually leaves with you, but this "good ending" isn't the canon one.
Nitro Rad: Ghosts aren't real.
Ghosts: Are we a joke to you?
I love these games, they were my introduction to horror games. I DESPERATELY want them to give Fatal Frame/Zeroshot the Resident Remake treatment and make a high quality remake, addressing some of the issues he mentioned which I do agree with even though I still love the games and don't mind the reading personally (though some things would've been better as more show, less tell I agree).
I can't help it the voice acting sounds exactly hi Poppy from That Poppy.
Yes been waiting so long for you to cover this series!
I'm glad you're ok after that hurricane.
I've been waiting for years for your Fatal Frame series review. I'm really glad the reviews are here now. I'm gonna watch all 3 in one row. Thank you so much,Nitro Rad!
Ok, now that you mention it, we need a survival horror set in Canada.
Just the other day I was wondering when you'd get to this series, and I am not disappointed. The Chills reference gave me a good chuckle too.
Man, America SUCKS at box art designing.
That's not true! I mean, we've got Mega Man... Or there's all of the changes to Kirby, and those are... Okay maybe that's kinda true.
Unless it was just kept the same overseas, I got plenty of games with decent box art like Dark Cloud 2. :p

Man, I saw that you posted that you were almost hit by a hurricane and even with that problem you still give us a great video, thank you man!
When it comes time to review "Fatal Frame 2", are you going to include the Wii remake as well?
I'm also surprised you didn't mention the XBox version of this game, as well as the endings and how they are obtained. (Dependent on your gameplay difficulty setting, for this one and number two.)
Yeah sucks
Digital Foundry would mention everything professionaly in detail
He is only 10k away from 200k we gotta make that happen! Share the vids.

I think you'll like the later ones much better than the first one. Fatal Frame 3 is my personal favorite and I'm excited to see your thoughts on it. Also, you might want to go back and refresh your self about Miku and her storyline about her mom. It'll make sense once you play 2.
Wolfs Bane 4 has nothing to do with Miku’s mom.
Ah finally, some good ol Fatal Frame. Can't wait till you get to #2!!!
Yes! Was waiting for you to do the Fatal Frame series. Fatal Frame II tripped me up the most when I was a teen.
Though there isn't concrete evidence it actually happened I think there is an actual mansion people believe it happened in
Dude! You finished the video with a freaking hurricane passing by?! You are THE man! Also, your reviews are top quality, always. We don't deserve you!
