  • Let’s see if the folks at PYI Inc. can restore and refurbish this 35 year old MAX-PROP Classic!
    PYI Inc. has been the sole distributor for the MAX-PROP in North/South America and Asia since it was founded in 1981.
    PYI also operates the only official world-wide refurbishment operation for ALL of the MAX-PROPS ever made since 1972.
    We take a trip to their Office/Showroom/Warehouse/Production Facility/Custom Machine Shop (They really do it all here!) to see if we can squeeze some more years out of this old bronze propeller.

    How many years/hours/nautical miles are on your MAX-Prop? Have you ever had yours refurbished? Let's hear your stories!

    • @livingforsail
      @livingforsail  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'll start... We had 35 years and somewhere between 4,000 - 6500 engine hours depending on which hour meter you choose to believe. After the refurbishment, it is difficult to believe that it isn't a brand new propeller...

      I bought a 1984 Nordic 44, 3600 hrs on the original engine, and had gone through a 5 year Caribbean cruise with the previous owner. The Maxprop was on the boat when they purchased it in the 90's, and I also had the single hole on the shaft nut, so similar vintage. (looks exactly like yours internally) I shipped it back and received a beautiful, like new prop for under $1000 as well. It is serving me well currently!

    I'm attempting to prepare my little boat for long distance solo ventures into the southern ocean, but unlike yourself my technical skills are more than a little challenged. But a modest budget means I have to DIY so learning via your vids has been very useful, so thank you. What I have noticed is how much care you put into the production of your vids. I don't mean to piss into your pocket too much but they are really good quality.

    It always amazed me what some people can do with a machine tool they know from top to bottom. Does not matter if it is mechanical or CNC. Mix that with decades of experience with the product, and many times it is better than new. It's tough to inspect that type of quality into a production line.

    I have a 16" 3-blade Max-Prop with a moderate amount of play in the blades. I am aware of the PYI refurbishing service, but have seen some high prices. I had considered the alternative of eventually replacing with a new Max-Prop Easy or a new Featherstream (as good but less expensive). I had not been able to find a good explanation of this PYI refurbishing service, but now we have it! Thank you John.
    Essentially there are two areas of wear: (1) the mating gear teeth on the cone and each blade, resulting in rotational play; & (2) the mating surfaces between the spacer and each blade, resulting in lateral play. PYI can mitigate much of that wear by replacing the cone gear and spacer. If that does not replace sufficient worn material, the blades may need to be replaced as well - significantly driving up the price.
    It seems to me that a simple DIY way to reduce the lateral play could be the insertion of a thin bronze shim between each spacer face and blade face - thereby pressing the back of each blade gear snug against its bearing surface. After measuring the gaps between spacer & blade surfaces with a feeler gauge (when partly assembled) it should be possible to have a machine shop prepare the appropriate shims from bronze sheet (McMaster-Carr 0.016", 0.02", 0.25", 0.032").

    • @livingforsail
      @livingforsail  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m happy that we could shed a. It of light on the process! Every prop will be different. Excessive rotational play could mean new blades and $$$$ but the retail cost of my repair at $1k for parts and labor is a really good investment towards another 10-15 years of reliable service.
      I don’t see why a self sufficient person couldn’t employ some of these methods in the home shop as you mentioned. It all comes down to time and money 😁.

      our prop is about 15 years old. They tightened it up with a new spacer and rebalanced. He said just keep it greased and dont slam it between forward and reverse and it should easily last 15-25 more years. If you do not want growth on it use prop speed, it woorks awesome. @@livingforsail

      there is a guy there named Phil who im dealing with to get new rudder bearings and he is incredible. Hes been there for over 20 years and found records of the bearings sold to the yard when our boat was built back in 99 and the replacments that were sold to the 2nd owner in 2014. their records are amazing. We also just replaced our PSS shaft seal, PYI has been essential to our winter projects.@@livingforsail

    What about prop coatings? Does Max Prop endorse the use of products like Speed Prop to reduce the amount of growth? Also, is there a fitting used for greasing the prop, or is disassembly required?

    • @livingforsail
      @livingforsail  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Great questions. PYI offers a coating called “Crystal prop”. It is a two component paint on coating that competes with “prop speed”.
      I’ve used prop speed before and it worked well. I imagine the Crystal prop is very good (reviews are positive).
      For greasing, there are several M6 set screws in the body of the prop. They can be removed and a grease fitting installed. You can inject grease like this in/out of the water.
      Cheers! 👍🙌
