33 for me also. Retired at 54 in 2007. I had been suspecting you after I noticed a few random tools that gave you away such as a can wrench and a spudger that made it into some videos. I love to "tinker" and work with my hands. Your videos have inspired me to do my own lawn equipment repairs. I Thank you Bruce!
If I didn't repair my own things and I live next to you. You will be my repair guy just because you are always clean and like to make your customers happy by giving them back a new looking mower etc. You the best Bruce. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Bruce, another great video...These engines, no matter what make have been a bit of a conundrum for me....don't know why but now I have a petrol compressor and generator `I have had to do some 'basic' stuff and you and Martin at Retrorestore have given me the knowledge to sort stuff out....makes me look intelligent when those who much more than myself have no idea how these things work....Thank you
That spark tester, although home made, gets the job done eh? Another great repair! Seems like the word is spreading that you're the go-to mower guy in the area! Cheers my Friend! Sean~
Good job Bruce, That motor is the same motor I put on a craftsman deck. I took 2 mowers and made a good one. The other motor had a bad coil and was Tecumseh. Now I have a great mower that my son is mowing lawns with for a summer job. It just started surging just a bit. Might have to do a carb cleaning on it. Mine seems to Idle slower then that one too. Oh ya, I watched Mr. Dress Up when I was young. Remember Casey & Finnagin.
Good Job as always bruce you do a lot of things shop around here don't do and another thing you take pride and care about your work were at most shops the guys don't really care and just rush through it they are there just to collect a paycheck. Have a great weekend. God Bless!!!
I've had the identical stud problem on my Honda mower's cover. I finally replaced the steel nuts with metric nylon-filled locking nuts, so they can be just snug without vibrating loose. I don't want to use Locktite on the studs into the block because it's necessary to remove those studs to get the flywheel off (not that it's necessary very often...).
Love watching your repair videos, but wish you could find a way I could see better as you work, I am listening to you talk as I watch your back, Maybe place the mower on left side ? Keep working enjoy your work,
Quality work, Bruce! If I were visiting, I could install an in-line fuel filter, and detail that mower for you. At least you didn't have to spend time fixing the thermostat choke assembly on this one.
Sometimes Honda does the same, the cover stud's needs to be red loc-tighted in from the factory or left hand threads on the engine side to stop them from doing that.
How about some blue Loctite on the stud threads? By the way, did you turn the engine over with the drill counterclockwise or clockwise? Or does it matter. Thanks.
Well on the coil I didn't but on the other 2 I did I don't know if i showed it. Filming everything is tough especially with an audience with a watchful eye.
I would have found that little bugger after 30 minute initial search, then a 30 min search in the garage for a suitable replacement followed by a 40 min trip to the store!
Great video Bruce. I have 2 questions for you if you can help me with: 1rst question is I just finished working on and old Ariens with a 5hp Briggs and Stratton. My neighbor would cut his grass with it and it would quit running. He would pull the rope to start it and It would fire up and run great. It would bog down and then the rpm’s would rev up back to normal and it would run great for a while and then it would quit running again. I took the carburetor off and cleaned it put everything back together, then I started it, took it for a test run and then it did the same thing , it ran great and then it did the same thing it did before after I worked on it. Ran for a while and then it would quit. Is there something wrong with the fuel system? Or is it the needle valve in the carburetor? I can’t figure it out. My second question: my father has a 18hp Briggs and Stratton craftsman riding lawnmower. When he goes to in engage the mower deck, it boggs down and wants to quit. Again I worked on the carburetor and it still does the same thing. But dad had the engine rebuilt a few years back . But when I took the carb apart, I couldn’t get the main jet out to get to the emulsion tube. The guy that rebuilt the engine, took the carburetor apart and screwed the main jet so tight that he wrecked it enough to where I couldn’t turn it out with the screw driver. But I cleaned it as best as I could. Would this be the problem onto why the engine keeps bogging down when goes to engage the mower deck? or is there something else that would cause this problem. Sorry for the Long winded questions.
The mower---Did you try it with out the gas cap or a loose one. On the riding mower. Bogging down is a tough one. Take off the drive belt to the deck and see if it bogs down again. The clutches can drag or there is a tight bearing in the deck itself. Look at everything. Start with no load on the motor then work your way up to a turning deck. (I am not there to hear and see). So good luck.
I use 4.5 most of the time. I have 4 and 5 but 4.5 is my go to pull rope. Just enter it into Amzon.com. here www.amazon.com/Briggs-Stratton-790966-200-foot-Starter/dp/B003RWT2ES/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1535307182&sr=8-3&keywords=rope+for+recoil+mower

…..aint another bad video Bruce......actually, surprised that word isn't in the ' Downunder ' dictionary, it get's plenty of use down here. Would have been interesting to know how much or how little metal would cause the mower to ' walk ' like it did. We seem to have more of the disc style blades, with two or four replaceable blades insitu. I balance them on a small scale capable of two decimal places, but not often do you get much difference. Cheers, Mike.
I fond a nice application for Windows 10 that will keep track of inventory, customer information, receipts and more. ISI ( Inventory Sales and Invoices ). I'm sure you can find it on Apple Store if your an Apple User.
Do you know if a B&S ignition coil would work on honda gcv160 engine? I have some B&S ignition coil laying around and don't want to buy a new honda ignition coil which is super expensive
I take it that your new ultra-sonic cleaner is getting a lot of use for cleaning these carbs. My only question is, how much disassembly and manual cleaning do you do before dunking the parts into the bath? None? Do you use any carb cleaning spray anymore? Has it become a "routine" to simply remove the carb and dunk it in the bath while you work on other things on the mower, like sharpening and balancing the blade, replacing the pull cord, changing the oil and other miscellaneous activities?
At some time simply take off the bowl remove the float and valve and throw everything (except the float) in the bath and see what happens. Let me know.
I heard that term applied to newer Toro mowers and they seem to actually be made in Mexico. Still North America, right! No one complains about their smart phones and TVs being made of "Chineseium," just tools and outdoor power equipment.
Major tune up and R/R recoil rope. $120.00 repair. It's the one thing that people don't understand is why it cost so much to repair their equipment. You just have to be smart enough to do it yourself or pay somebody to do it.
Great video Bruce, Thanks for mentioning the ratings (7.0 on this one) on Briggs engines are torque not HP. I have the 'ugly' formula if you so desire, but this will help with the general idea. th-cam.com/video/d4opij_ehvU/w-d-xo.html

Thank you for the Mr Dressup reference ...I had to laugh . I watched him everyday as a kid.
Cool
The lost bolt - that's a classic - for me that usually means dirty knees. Nice video Bruce - thanks for sharing
we have all done it.
Nice job Bruce. It's nice having a ready supply of recoil rope at hand. Hope you have a nice weekend!
Thanks. Yes a few years ago I got a (small) spool of each except for the really big and really small stuff.
That mower is just like new again thanks to your attention to detail!!!
Thank you for watching.
Another nice job. Great attention to detail. (Nice to see the "Pioneer" sign as you passed by. I was and still am one.)
I was wondering if someone would see and understand that. cool. 33 years for me.
Attention to detail was the key back then and still is. No 80 % passing grade. It had to be 100%

Omg can we say over kill for that size deck.... The engine is almost as big as the mower.... Great video man.
Yes and it is still only a 6HP (maybe)
@@BrucesShop oh yeah your correct, it just seems over kill for that size mower, a 3 to 5 HP would surfice.

Yes they stole the idea. They even cross fit.

I know he did hit a fence post when he was cutting the grass last year. The deck was out of alignment.
Where do you buy 1/4 black fuel line for lawnmower? And what do you use to clamp on fuel line to stop gasoline when you take it off?
Here in Canada you can go to Princess Auto. In the states Harbor Freight.
Now I use a hemostat. (medical pliers)
Where would you buy a big roll of starter recoil? And what size for lawnmower and snowblower?

Do you know if a B&S ignition coil would work on honda gcv160 engine? I have some B&S ignition coil laying around and don't want to buy a new honda ignition coil which is super expensive
No They are proprietary.
How much do you charge if your neighbor bring in a lawnmower that cannot start?
$ 0 unless it needs parts. This is mostly a hobby for me.

I still clean the exterior of the carb, remove the bowl and spray a bit. I can't stop myself. haha. I should just throw one in.
At some time simply take off the bowl remove the float and valve and throw everything (except the float) in the bath and see what happens. Let me know.
you are right. i have thought's about contaminating the liquid. Crazy I know.
Chineseium as has become a popular urban term.
Well now companies are starting to insource instead of outsourcing. That actually has been happening for 4 years now.
I heard that term applied to newer Toro mowers and they seem to actually be made in Mexico. Still North America, right! No one complains about their smart phones and TVs being made of "Chineseium," just tools and outdoor power equipment.
This mower is not an example of Chinese quality, but it is going up (Chinese quality) in my mind.
