Natalie Dessay was born in Lyon, grew up in Bordeaux and always wanted to become a dancer or actress. Her voice was discovered; she won the Austrian Mozart Contest in 1990, which was her breakthrough.
Interview backstage:
When asked what she was thinking about the just performed first act she says that she's satisfied but that there are of course some things that aren't "mature" yet.
(Question: What do you think about your role? Marie is quite a wild child...)
"That's me!", she answers. She says that the stageing and the dialogues have been designed after her; she has worked with Laurent Pelly (the director) many times before and he knows her pretty well. The concept of her Marie: very lively, happy, enthusiastic about her work and very patriotic - the régiment is liberty for her. All this is of course a bit ironic and consequentially funny.
About operettas: She thinks that La Fille du Régiment can be seen as kind of a forerunner for Offenbach's operettas. With Laurent Pelly she has already produced Orphée aux enfers where she was certainly more "feminine" as Euridice, as she says.
When asked if she had been similar to Marie when she had been a child, she answers that her inspiration for this role comes from her daughter, who is eight and very much like the Marie to be seen on stage.
She speaks PERFECT French, English, Italian, and German. Amazing. TOTALLY jealous.
Totally agree. But I think that such a great artists as Dessay don't need much publicity. They are popular among true music lovers, this is more important.
I like the French r's. Gives it a unique colour.

yes thats true, and you can hear some vocal inflection in her english that comes from french... but I just think it's even more adorable! :-D

Je pense que j'ai lu qu'elle parlait l'allemand avant de chanter. Et aussi, elle a chanté a Autriche plusieurs ans, et on y parle allemand. En plus, ses premiers rôles étaient seulement en français ou en allemand.
YEAH. Oh my God. She's so amazing. Still, you can hear some French coloring in her German--especially her 'r's--and a slight American inflection on some of her vowels in English. Not that it matters haha.

vraiment? mais c'est peut-être la langue la plus importante de tout l'opéra (en particulaire les rôles de bel canto, dans lesquels elle se spécialise), et elle la chante si naturellement...
je me pose seulement la quéstion "pourquoi apprendre l'allemend si bien et pas l'italien?"
