TIP: For anyone who may be selling these or giving them away as gifts. If they don't look "professional" when they dry, just hit them with the heat from a hair dryer before capping. It will smooth them so they look machine done.
You are a great announcer / speaker. I am only 7 years old and I want to be as professional as you are. thank you for making this video .your video is very interesting:D
Hello there~The oil used in this recipe is a Calendula-infused Sweet Almond Oil. This is Sweet Almond Oil that has been poured over dried Calendula petals and allowed to infuse in a cool, dark place for several weeks and then strained. You could also use Calendula oil that has been made from Olive Oil, Sunflower Oil, etc. Thanks for the question! ~Kori
I just made these today, and they worked great! I also made Calendula infused oil, and added some peppermint essential oil and some organic cocoa powder! Thanks for the idea, and your lip balm tubes work great!!
I made this recipe ( after failing with another recipe four times... They were not lip balm, but more like crayons) this recipe worked very well! Not too soft, not too hard. Thanks MRH! :)
Hi Kayla, thanks for the question. Yes you can use a little bit of shea butter! But make sure it's just a little bit, because it will harden the lip balm. And I'd definitely recommend experimenting with coloring. Check out our madder root that we sell at Mountain Rose, it makes a nice orange to reddish dye! Hope that helps :) -Mason
@elizabethannshapiro Essential oils are concentrated, so a little goes a long way. I would use 5 to 10 drops for every 10 tubes of balm. Hope this helps and sorry for the delay! ~ Erin
Hi Ana! This is a good question. This lip balm is similar to any you might buy in that if you leave it in the warm sun or carry it around in a warm pocket all day, it will get softer and potentially melt. If you keep it out of the heat and sun, you should be fine. Of course, the final texture will depend a bit on what additions (and how much) you incorporate. Hope this helps! ~Kori
Great question! Gently heating oils can be a good thing and can help some herbs to release their properties (namely roots and barks). It is a good idea to do a little research and see which herbs work best with longer, room temperature infusions and which ones work best with a warming of the oils. Be careful not to heat too quickly and you do not want to boil! For this, you need to get the beeswax and the oils to melt together--gentle heating just until incorporated :) ~Kori
Hi Eric~Thank you for your questions. You can definitely experiment and use oil combinations (one of my favorites is coconut oil and cocoa butter). I normally use a pyrex bowl or measuring bowl for combining the ingredients and then heat it over the water so clean-up is a breeze. I hope this helps! Good luck ~Kori
Hi Parveen~Yes, you will want to pour the melted oils into the lip balm containers while it is warm. It starts to harden very quickly with the beeswax in it, so you will want to pour it immediately after mixing everything all together. ~Kori
You should be able to use any of the carrier oils we offer. Some are thicker than others, so you may need to experiment with the recipe to get it just right. As for essential oils, they are VERY concentrated and some can be caustic to the skin. I recommend researching before using them or stick with safe oils like lavender, orange, and peppermint. Less is always best with essential oils! Hope this helps. Cheers, Erin
Hi Parveen~After melting the calendula infused sweet Almond oil with the beeswax, John adds some Anise Seed Essential Oil (this has a bit of a licorice-y taste). I hope that answers your question! Good luck ~Kori
Hi Jane! This is a good question. We have found that since extracts are alcohol based, they tend to separate out from the oils in the lip balm. An oil based flavoring or, what we tend to use, essential oils work best. I hope this answers your question. Good luck! ~Kori
I only use Bodyshop and that cost me $7 US per stick. I defiantly will start this method and make my own, might use Extra Virgin Olive Oil as a substitute. Awesome video.
Hi April~That is a great and hard question :) Laws vary and change so it is best to check FDA regulations so you are up on the laws, risks, language, etc. It will depend what sort of ingredients you use and how you classify and name your products, as well as whether you are selling locally or shipping to other states or even internationally. A little research and preparation can go a long way! Good Luck ~Kori
@marjs29 You can try using oils that are solid at room temoperature like coconut oil and cocoa butter. Their are other veggie based waxes that may work as well like carnuba and candelilla. You can find them on our website. Thank you! ~ Erin
I definitely buy all my oils from Mountain Rose and make my own hair conditioners etc...I'm having one issue though. How do I make a lip balm of face lotion with SPF? I use coconut oil on my face daily and I know that that is a natural sun protectant and my medicine cabinet is FULL of ALL Mountain Rose products, but the spf is one thing I don't get. Is coconut oil strong enough alone? Also your product authenticity is awesome. Organic unrefined oil is WAY different that store bought. Thanks
Hi! You can add the extract in the beginning and then melt all the oils, butters and beeswax together. We have shared some great recipes for lip balm in our newsletters and on our web site (including one for a yummy Peppermint Cocoa lip balm in our January-February 2011 issue) you might like to try! ~Kori
I really love the video but just a suggestion, it would be nice if you can post the ingredients detail in description with the direct link to purchase them from your site. Also, it would be nice if you can write down the measurements of the ingredients in description box because sometimes in the videos they are not very clear about the measurements. Note: I think you made a mistake when talking about beeswax ratio in the lip balm.
Really love this! for stay at home people-this is wonderful! I will order from Mountain Rose-I am very grateful! Wonderful, friendly teacher, too. thanks!
Hello! There are those who like to infuse their oils in a sunny, warm place for the added benefit of the sun. The suggestion for a cool, dark place is to 1. avoid temperature fluctuations, which can compromise how long the herbs last and 2. the dark also helps to preserve the herbs and infused oils for longer. It really is up to you how you'd like to do it. Good luck! ~Kori
You could take a block of wood and drill holes in it to hold your tubes--might be easier to pour the balm into them. Also, instead of a double boiler, you can use a pyrex measuring cup in a saucepan. If you warmed the oil before pouring it in the wax, would that work?
i bought beet powder..someone said it can be used for blush. so,im gonna try that and maybe add a bit in with the oil when i make the lip balm. maybe squeeze some berries in there..dont know if it will go bad though..store in fridge. just my thoughts.....im wondering about what to use for pigment also. think food :)
Can I add Coconut oil or shea butter? IF so, how much should I add to this recipe. I know adding too much will make the product much softer, which is bad, I dont want it melting when I carry it around. But arent there so many benefits of adding these ingredients? THanks in advance! Im really excited about making these.
If I wanted to sweeten the lip balm, could I add some dried stevia leaf to the calendula oil infusion? If so, how much would you recommend for a cup of oil? Not looking for it to be overpoweringly sweet, just a hint of sweetness.
That does help. Thank you. Any advice for blending flavors together in terms of ratios and proportions of liquids? Say something like an Orange/Peppermint?
Hi there~The challenge with hemp oil is that it is that it shouldn't really be heated. If you must, you can gently heat it for a short period of time so you could give it a try in a lip balm recipe. Good luck~Kori
which essential oils could be used for lip balm, and which oils should not be considered? i've looked on the website you provide and there are just so many to choose from, but i want to make sure i don't make a purchase on an oil that can't be used for this kind of project. please and thanks great video by the way :)
Hi Jade~You could use Carnauba wax in place of the beeswax. (It is obtained from the Brazilian Palm Tree). I have also heard of folks using Candelilla wax in vegan body care and cosmetic products. Good luck! ~Kori
We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed the video! We will be adding more recipes and informative videos so be sure to subscribe if you like what you see! Thanks for tuning in, Erica!
Hi Maddie~you can purchase those from us at mountain rose herbs (dot) com. We have them in clear and in the white that is shown. Thanks so much for your interest! ~Kori
You can also make a good double boiler by putting a big metal mixing bowl on top of a pot of water. just make sure the the bowl isn't smaller than the pot because it may tip over and get water in your lip balm! And only handle it with pot holders as the bowl will get hot!
I loved the video. I've been making herbal salves for a few years now and made up some chapstick recently. I'll have to try the anise flavor. That's the flavor of my toothpaste so I should like it in my chapstick.
would Coconut oil be good for this? Or does the oil need to be liquid at room temp? Also, does the lip balm ever clog up the twisty-thing in the tubes? I've always been scared to try that.....
Oh, one more thing, sorry. LOL! I'm a holistic kind of gal experimenting on my own and I really need a book that explains the uses and nature of oils etc...Do you suggest a book or does Mountain Rose havev their own? Also, WOW, I don't need a bunch of makeup, because of the effects of the oil, but I DO use waterproof mascara and that is all. Is there an oil that will take it off rather than using the refined oils the stores suggest? Ok, that's it.
Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate international shipping (with the exception of Canada) at this time. This was a very difficult decision for us and I’m sorry that we are no longer able to meet your needs. I wish you the best in finding high quality organic herbs in your area and thank you for your interest. ~Kori
hi john, thanks for the video. very informative. just wondering, for fragrance/flavor, can you use the flavors that you find in the baking section -i.e. vanilla extract, mint, orange, peppermint, etc...
Hi Carolina! You could experiment with some herbs that have a tinting quality. Mason suggests some madder root, for example, which can make a nice reddish/orangish dye color. Enjoy! ~Kori
Gota try this ASAP! This Simple and easy lesson was exactly that I needed to see. Question: I was shopping around and though I have a 1lbs yellow bees wax bar, I noticed white all “natural” bees wax also. Could that be a suitable substitute or do you have a preferred make?
Hi there, great question! The only real difference between white and yellow beeswax is that the color has been filtered out in white beeswax. You could use either depending on the look you prefer! - Gracie
Hi! You can choose what sort of oil you'd like to use--olive oil would work nicely, but so would sunflower, almond, or many others. You might want to check out the "carrier oils" product section on our website for some ideas :) ~Kori
Double boiler is just water that's put in a pot and you boil it. Then you take a heat proof bowl (usually glass) and put it on top. It just does the effect of evenly heating the item that you put in the heat proof bowl. Unless you don't have a pot or heat proof/glass bowl, then you don't have a double boiler. Hope this helps! :)
Do you also have a video were you explain how to make the essential oil? I watched the video were I learned how to make infused oil. But I like to make the essential oil by my self as well.

You can use honey--but not instead of the beeswax. I have seen recipes that incorporate honey into lip balm recipes. They all add small amunts of honey after the oils and beeswax have been melted. I would suggest doing a little online research and finding a recipe that includes honey and giving it a try! Let us know how it goes :) Good luck~Kori
I have watched the salve video three times now. And she did 4 ounces of prepared oil to1 ounce of beeswax. I double checked to compare to your recipe for the lip balm, with the 8 ounces of oil to 2 ounces of bees wax. In my math, that is the exact same recipe. So question, shouldn’t be salve be softer than the lip balm meaning, that the lip balm should be 4 ounces of oil to 2 ounces of wax? I am just getting started with doing my oils and would appreciate an answer as to making sure I do this properly, thank you.

I love it! Finally not just some DIY rainbow or chocolate, etc ! An actual semi professional how to, and is great step by step!
I just made these today, and they worked great! I also made Calendula infused oil, and added some peppermint essential oil and some organic cocoa powder! Thanks for the idea, and your lip balm tubes work great!!
Oh how I'd love to tey that. How much of each did you use ? I don't want to mess up.and waste product making my own chapstick.

Hi Kayla, thanks for the question. Yes you can use a little bit of shea butter! But make sure it's just a little bit, because it will harden the lip balm. About 227 grams in a cup.
Hi Parveen~Yes, you will want to pour the melted oils into the lip balm containers while it is warm. It starts to harden very quickly with the beeswax in it, so you will want to pour it immediately after mixing everything all together. ~Kori
@piccolo3431 These should stay good for at least a year. The essential oils help preserve them, but you can add some vit e oil as well. ~ Erin

I did it. Simple, fun, and quite rewarding.

how long do these last on the shelf?
is the anise seed oil the same thing as the calendula oil
