    This is great and seems simple enough...I'm not sure if you ever do this, but it'd be really helpful if you included approximately how much you spent on projects (esp cheaper ones like this). Thanks!

    @zoec8643 7 ปีที่แล้ว +160

    The size is says when you buy it, is the size the wood was when it was first cut at the saw mill. It shrinks when it dries and you usually lose about a half inch in the process.

    • @shaliniasokkumar7617
      @shaliniasokkumar7617 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Zoe C also they sand the wood so that there aren't rough edges

    • @zoec8643
      @zoec8643 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Shalini Asokkumar that's true. some of the wood is lost when it's planed down

    • @RexPersonthing
      @RexPersonthing 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Zoe C yeah, the milling and planing process to make everything even and parallel is where the extra gets lost. It's easier to rough cut it to the same dimensions then mill it down as needed, at least when wood is milled en masse.

    • @leahmpeavy
      @leahmpeavy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True.. so when people say 2x4 the actual size is 1.5x3.5

  • @teenytinyflame
    @teenytinyflame 7 ปีที่แล้ว +110

    Trick for not drilling too deep: use a bit of tape to mark how deep you can go on the drill bit! Go slowly and when the tape is almost touching the wood you're good to go!!!!

    one thing i love about your videos (apart from the quality and originality ofc) is that you're not afraid to show your mistakes and show how you learned from them. It's not only humble and makes the process look way more real for us, it's also super useful because we all kind of do the same mistakes so it's way easier to learn how to do things properly !

    I would love a list of materials in the description, or links to where you can buy things like the legs! I cannot wait to make these this weekend. I might make myself a matching coffee table!

  • @Zoye123456789
    @Zoye123456789 7 ปีที่แล้ว +41

    WHEN STAINING, ALWAYS GO WITH THE GRAIN OF THE WOOD. I ruined a project I was working on that took me months because I stained wrong and the projects was too small and thin to sand and re-stain. ALSO stain the main project and legs separately and the assemble, its much more simple.

    • @shirink9050
      @shirink9050 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha i had the exact same idea! Did you end up with great results?

  • @hjeffwallace
    @hjeffwallace 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My daughter sent me this video to build. It looks great. You need more than 2 nails for boards to keep them from warping. The t-nuts should be on the opposite side of the wood, or they will eventually pull out. The scale is about 1/2 of what a side table should be.
    Great suggestion to have the hardware store cut the pieces!
    Keep up the great work!

    you totally saved me!! I've been looking everywhere for a moderately priced night stand and this is exactly what I want! Thank you!!

  • @colleenking8810
    @colleenking8810 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Daughter of a contractor here: I would recommend some wood filler for where you have small gaps where the sides meet each other. Or even to fill in the parts you split on the bottom of the nightstand. After staining it is not noticeable and gives a more seamless finish.

    I'm moving and I was looking for affordable night stands but nothing really looked how I wanted it to and this is PERFECT. I'm honestly so excited to recreate this and it will be so much better because I would have actually made it myself!!

  • @marshastraub2158
    @marshastraub2158 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You can counter sink the screws or get finishing nails that you can tap in below the finished suraace. You then buy wood putty to fill the holes , let it dry, lightly sand, and when you stain it looks like solid wood because the wood putty is wood particles in glue.

    I'm not sure about planks this size, but 2"x4"s are actually 1/2"x3"1/2 so when contractors are building a house the studs plus the dry wall make a four inch wall (the standard for interiors)!

    Just a suggestion: if you want to avoid drilling too far into the wood, you can measure 1/4" or so from the end of the drill bit and then put some tape on the drill bit, taping the 2 ends of the tape together into a little "flag", leaving that 1/4" end exposed. Then when you use it to drill, it'll give you a marker to stop drilling when the tape starts to hit the wood.

    A cheap way to mask nails and screws a bit (apart from going out and buying filler or putty) is to mix a bit of your shavings from sanding the piece with some of your wood glue and smearing it over the nail heads.

    My husband and I did this for our apartment bedroom. You might want to add that you need to be CAREFUL with the wood glue. We got some on the outward-facing surface of the wood, and no matter how much we sanded we couldn't get the stain to look right on that portion. Just a suggestion!

    you could have counter sunk the screws slightly deeper than the surface then used stainable wood filler to hide them. same with the nails. i have done this with many projects. also a kreg jig for hidden screws is awesome, but a little less of a simple diy.

    You know that t-nuts are normally used the other way around right? They are designed to be put at the other side of the board and tensioned. As the are connected now, you can just pull the Lets from under the nightstand 😉
    For this project, you normally use threaded inserts, with metric thread on the inside and wood thread on the outside.
