    The galaxy class was a lot more deadly than it showed. The writers just killed it

      Yeah, instead they turn the class into big spoon like cruise ship.

    Makes you wonder why the galaxy class starship in the following situations never used their huge arsenal of torpedo's:
    - In Generations, when the Bird of Prey matches the shield frequency and starts shooting at the Enterprise, but the Enterprise is such a large ship it could still easily shoot back 4 to 8 torpedo's, and from what I have seen in Star Trek The Undiscovered country, it took the 'old' Enterprise and an Excesior class only 3 or 4 torpedo's to destroy a Bird of Prey.
    - In Deep Space Nine the last episode of season 2, the USS Odyssey, also a galaxy class starship did not fire a single torpedo at just three relative puny Jem H'adar fighters. Here basically the same, even though those fighters could shoot through the shields we never saw the Odyssey's torpedo launchers being hit. And it's not like torpedo's cannot be used against those fighters because when the Dominion attacks the stations Worf destroys 3 Jem H'adar fighters that were closing in on the Defiant, WITH torpedo's. Only 2 torpedo's per fighter were used.
    In general it can be said that the both ships were not acting as how they supposed to be. Why was the Enterprise even turning away from the BoP, putting it's nacelles into the line of fire, while the phaser banks where on the saucer section and also with one torpedo launcher at the front. The first volley of the bird of prey only hit the middle hull section. Same goes for the Odyssey, which even had flanking cover fire from 2 runabouts. How much I dislike those scenes.

      In a lot of ways your right, the under use of torpedoes in the galaxy class is real but there is a reason, the ship itself was not designed for war. All of its design was mean for a long rang research and diplomacy vessel, only fitted with another fire power for defense, never to go on offense. Even when the engineers were considering the ship in a drawn out combat, they designed it to be an attack corridination vessel.
      Now back to the torpedoes, following the design intent of the ship, it only has 2 to 3 torpedoes launchers, and it each launcher only 12 torpedoes in battery. Leading to only 36 torpedoes in an overall battery. on the other hand the defient has a smaller, more advance, and more importantly replicatable torpedo style. Unlike the older, much larger torpedo that either needed to be hand made or replenished at a local space dock.
      So every time they got into combat they needed to depend on the type 7 phasers, unlike the typ 8 impulse phasers like the defient's arsenal.
      All in all it's a gardener In a war instead of a warrior in a garden.
      This is you local trekker, signing off👽

      @@budgetbiker26 There are lots of inaccuracy in your statement. Not sure where you got that from.
      First of all Galaxy class IS a warship. Not by name, but its explicitly stated in Enterprise D official technical manual by Rick Stenberg, the ship classified as "Explorer". Its stated that the classification of "Explorer" were in fact for the most powerful, most advance vessel up to date, that serves for exploration during peace time & tactical platform during wartime. The ship were designed to fill any role given to it from science expedition, first contact duty, & combat assignment.
      Second, your assessment were incorrect.
      Galaxy class have three fixed torpedo launchers with ten tubes each. But only two of them can be used ,without multi vector attack mode.
      It still gave Galaxy class capability for twenty torpedo salvos.
      Only Sovereign class, enterprise E surpassed Galaxy class arsenall in both phaser & torpedo compliment.
      Fore 1 turret launcher w/ 6 tubes each, 2 fixed launcher w/ 5 tubes each, 2 fixed launcher w/ 1 tube each. With additional 1 fixed launcher w/ 2 tubes each prior to 2379. A total of twenty salvos.
      Akira have 3 launchers (2 fore, one aft), five tube each. Total fifteen salvos.
      Defiant class only have four fore launchers & two aft launchers, one tube each.
      Total of six salvos.
      Third, Galaxy class have type X phaser, not type VII.
      Defiant's pulse phaser have similar output of type X albeit w/ different mechanism to maximize damage deal to the hull, but not against shield.
      Both rated at 5.1Gigawatt.
      Observation evidence during show, at least in two different occasion, it's consistently shown only required one to two seconds of burst of Type X Galaxy's phaser to eliminate a single jemhadar bug fighter. (A total of one hit from one phaser bank).
      In the other side, it's also consistently shown, as it required five salvos from Defiant's quad pulse phasers to destroy the same type ship. (A total of five hits from four phaser banks).
      Galaxy class isn't a gardener at all as she has almost all Defiant's technology on hers, minus the new regenerative shielding & quantum torpedo magazine.
      Both have very same model & type shield generators 3rd gen FIDSS with same output, albeit Galaxy class have twelve of them, rated at 4,608 gigawatt; while Defiant class only have four, and only two allowed to be actived at one time, due to its regenerative shielding.
      Rated at 768 gigawatt.
      Both have Ablative ceramic armor.
      (Citation : official STNG Technical Manual by Rick Stenbach & Michael Okuda, 1991, page 23 & STDS9 technical manual page 132 by Herman Zimmerman & Rick Stenbach).
      Without looking into their actual official specification, Galaxy class were really underated, while Defiant seriously overated by its fans.
      That's why somepeople fail to understand why they use Enterprise D in Startrek Picard's last episode to fight the Borg, or why Defiant was pitted against a very old (uprated) Excelsior class, rather than the brand new Akira or even Nebula class, let alone the Galaxy class.

    • @ransom182
      @ransom182 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely! People think the Sovereign is better at combat but the Galaxy class has the longest phaser array in the fleet by far (her main dorsal array is about the circumference of the Sovereign's entire saucer!). And with 2.5 times the internal volume there's no way her power plant is outclassed by the Sovereign. She's the battleship of the fleet - no doubt about it.

    • @superhayes256
      @superhayes256 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She’s also a bigger target and not designed for combat to be the primary focus. The sovereign is a warship and mops the floor of most adversaries.

      superhayes256 there’s no onscreen evidence that the Sovereign is any more of a “warship” than the Galaxy class. Neither is there any evidence she “mops the floor of most enemies”.

      ransom182 Regenerative shielding. Separate quantum and photon launchers. More and stronger phaser arrays. Ablative hull armor
      The reason why the Scimitar minced the Enterprise E was because it needed something that powerful to take it down. The Sovereign class would beat the Galaxy Class. Although it wouldn’t exactly be easy. The Galaxy was able to match Warbirds, Vorchas and basically any alpha Quadrant ship 1 on 1. When the Federation found a way to adapt to Dominion weapons they were able to tear through Dominion ships, especially with the refit. The only weakness to a Galaxy class was its lack of armor. It could be picked on and not survive the largest amount of punishment a ship of its size normally would. Thankfully it could dish out the damage too, negating that downside somewhat.

    The Galaxy class in a way was a sign of how complacent the Federation had become. A very powerful and pretty well armed multi purpose craft. But the federation felt so safe they built this front like ship as a mobile settlement ( you don't take children and families to the frount lines), and built her for a 75 year service life ( warship generally take a beating, and yould expect would get very obsolete ).
    Squadrons of Defiants working from a big ship like a galaxy that acts as a mobile base would make sence. Or The more heavily armed Soverigns as the frount line ships and Galaxy class as a major research and operations center that is dispatched later?

    • @ransom182
      @ransom182 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There’s no onscreen evidence the Sovereign is better armed than the Galaxy class. And remember, Starfleet tends to keep around older designs for a long time while giving them regular refits. The Galaxy has 2.5x the internal volume of the Sovereign and only a few years older - I doubt the Sovereign can outclass the Galaxy in terms of raw power. It just wouldn’t make sense.
      Each starship class has their role. I like to think of the Defiant as a heavy escort/destroyer, the Sovereign as a heavy cruiser and the Galaxy class as the battleship of the fleet.

    • @Nick871203
      @Nick871203 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the Sovereign is more powerfull then a galaxy class... just cause the galaxy is bigger doesnt make it be more powerfull, remember the ship carried families during peace time of exploration and expeditions which may explain why its also bigger, also good for transporting large amounts of people during situations as well. also remember The sovereign is a little contradictory of being too aggressive with the amount of firepower it actually has,
