Same, my musician friend and I used to watch snl every week and they'd always complain when someone was pretending to play a musical instrument in a sketch but clearly had no idea what they were doing. It adds so much to a sketch when a performer is able to commit on this level
This tripped me out so hard! I remembered this skit when I seen the thumbnail but it wasn't until he did the "the mother, the father..." part where it came flooding back like a tidal wave! Perfect!
Back when I was an MC at DNB raves (like 15+ years ago) I used the "The mother, the father, the serpent, the priest! The foreman, the woman, the widow, the beast!” line a couple times at shows. Once and only once did someone after a show come up and tell me they knew it was from the Kids. I hugged that person.
It was skits like this when it aired late at night that made me doubt my sanity. Was I starting to sleep, and dreaming? Or was this really happening?...
Oh man, I experienced the same thing years ago. I got home at 4am after an intense punk show so I was exhaustedbut full of adrenaline. I was in that weird "too tired to sleep" mood, watching TV and the "Every day we work" sketch where they shovel coal into a furnace. I though I was losing my mind.
You know what I like about the bass player? His neck...how do they come up with this stuff. It's not just the writing that makes it funny. Their whole physicality.
I'm sure more than one person's remarked that Kevin DOES look like an escaped medical experiment! (You could pretty say that about most of the troupe!)
I love kith! This is one of the classics. So many times I've mentioned "the bass player is the loser of the band ", or "he always gets the best looking girls, best friend ". Beautiful!
I was watching them on Peacock the other day and this sketch came up. Brought back memories from when I watched it back in the day. This and the Daves I know. They don't have silly comedy like this much anymore. Love it
This was chock full o nuts. "Hes balding...spiritually", "whenever I listen to bass, I always bring cab fare", "that bass is making me chubby", and all the shimmies
@@jime6688: The White Stipes definitely has bass players of some sort. I imagine Jack White played the parts in the studio and they probably hired a touring musician when they played live.
Kevin's got some great Eraserhead hair going on in this sketch. It's remarkable.
Eraserhead! Trippy film from David Lynch! Wild hairstyle for sure!!!
That was his season one look.
He's actually playing too, which makes me happy.
So very happy

G C D and back to C. Throw in a few octaves and other cheats.
This sketch made me want to play the bass.
If anybody's curious, the band in the background is Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. If you like their music on the show, buy their albums!
Thank you dude!
Great band. They did the theme song to the show and are one of the best instrumental bands ever. Canadian legends
Sadly, they had two bass players over the years, who both died young.
This was Canada BEFORE pot was legal.
Get with it Man!!! There's no more pot on the earth anymore.👹
One of my favorites of all time!! Kevin McDonald has some serious Grover/Gonzo puppet meets Dada Artist meets Beatnik energy. I love it!
Accurate description Terry! 😂
And Beeker
I play this bass line whenever I try out new basses.
*^ * Best Comment Award.* *
Basses or bass players :D?
if you could
You keep that up and they'll put a "🚫" sign 🤣... Only for that song.
@Lennox Otto - I’ve seen Bryce’s post and your reply on enough videos to know that you’re one and the same and a pathetic loser. GFY.
Look at that smile; there's sadness in that smile.
Look at that chord structure; there's sadness in that chord structure.
Chord structure on a bass?
This tripped me out so hard! I remembered this skit when I seen the thumbnail but it wasn't until he did the "the mother, the father..." part where it came flooding back like a tidal wave! Perfect!
You seen it? Really? You’re what - five years old?
Me too.. and then I started remembering the lines! Look at him flail at the wailing wall!
Back when I was an MC at DNB raves (like 15+ years ago) I used the "The mother, the father, the serpent, the priest! The foreman, the woman, the widow, the beast!” line a couple times at shows. And most of the crowd always thought it was ALL original, coming from just you...🤣 I love it.
@@waterlec8718 Hahahaha! I admit I never tried to steal anyone's material but it just fit so well!
@Congolese Capitalist I would pay money to hear Devilman throw that in a build up line.
I thought it was a Doors lyric.
@@stevelibby6852 Hmmm, not to my knowledge but I will admit I do not know many Doors songs.
People like Kevin just should not exist. That look, with that voice, with that confidence. An absolute legend
He's like a real-life toon.
he was the great denim vest guy on Seinfeld's festivus episode
Agreed. 👍
Nice seeing Shadowy Men on a Shadow Planet in the background.
I like the fact that Bruce isn't miming that bass playing at all.
If all Bruce had ever done was this sketch and Terrier Town, that alone would been enough for several lifetime achievement awards.
And Bruce has the same hairstyle as Pavement bassist Mark Ibold.
One of the greatest comic performances I've ever seen. Thanks for everything.
Laughter is very healing.
Funny people like Kevin MacDonald make life bearable.
As a bass player I can confirm that this is all true.
100%
As a former bass player, you can read all about this in my memoirs.
I'll second this as a former student of said instrument
come on guys dont beat yourselves up.
remember that keyboardist are the real losers of any band
Regards to Heather.

I'm experiencing that now and it's 7:30 in the evening.
I miss the way Comedy Central was back then. MST3K, SCTV, KitH, etc.
Kevin McDonald: Eraserhead
I'm sure more than one person's remarked that Kevin DOES look like an escaped medical experiment!
(You could pretty say that about most of the troupe!)
Pretty close if you have seen the short. He's a skinny Eraserhead
Yes
Jazz Pauly Shore
Well we all know Dave was a test tube baby. Just don't tease or make fun of him for it.
Ah yes. The sweater tucked into the mom jean look. Outstanding.
... and a 'bat wing' sweater I believe!
How do I know?
I once heard a whole pub shout: "Nigel's wearing his mum's batwing jumper!" 🙈🇬🇧
Saw this as a kid in the 90s, it's the best sketch ever made! God bless Kids In The Hall! 💗
Still one of the best bits of all time...
These guys were great, one of the best part of my early teen years.
New episodes coming out May 13th, 2022 on Amazon Prime!
‘“If you don’t believe me, look at the one that you’re with” reference is on the edge of the edge.
Might be referencing a John Lennon song about women.
Just came into the comments looking for my people
Brilliant. Such a great show, 5 heavyweight comic talents.
Scott, Kevin, Bruce, Dave...and Paul Bellini?
the mother the father the serpent the priest the foreman the woman the widow the beast
TheSeeohhdee aren’t u glad that you’re not one
Sadly I'm 2 of those 😞

I'm going to guess you're a serpent foreman.
FunkYeah hahahaaa
No just a woman and mother
Like your name it's so funked up!

I was attending U. of Missouri and living in a dorm room when this came out. Man... let me go back there please.

Best part is Bruce trying not to crack up
These guys were amazing. Used to watch them all the time! And this, like so many others of theirs, cracked me up!
"...but that's ok, because whenever I listen to the bass player, I always bring cab fare."
Bruh i read this just as he said it.
That punchline to the rambling setup was my favorite part.
This is one of my fav sketches. Kevin MacDonald is so underrated.
Kevin has always been my favorite Kid. This sketch is an example of why.
The others were all great comic performers, but Kevin is completely unique.
This is maybe my favorite KIDS skit.
its good. for me its between "girl drink drunk" and "steel toed boots"
What about Bobby vs Satan ??
The other Kids say Kevin is the funniest. He can make people laugh without saying a word 🥸
He just has to do a take with a finger to his chin.
Kevin is the one talking.
@@keithklassen5320 Yes and Bruce is playing the bass with an occasional quip.
What’s your point?
He's balding... spiritually
Daves know...they know
I was too. Then my temporal self caught up with my spirtual self and now I am ONE. One bald bass player.
No words! Never saw this one. But I remember them changing my reality way back when, and they've done it again tonight.
The gypsies had no homes the doors had no bass.
JIM FUCKING MORRISON! THAT'S WHO
Moewissan to you
Holy shit, this is absolute genius. Such a classic. Thanks for the upload.
Absolutely love these guys...Silly and brilliant.
This has always been my favorite.
The two best cast members
Agreed!
I'm more of a Dave Foley fan, myself. But, they are all great.
THE MOTHER, THE FATHER, THE SERPUNT, THE PRIEST.....THE FOREMAN, THE WOMAN, THE WIDOW AND BEAST........
"The Wildebeest"
@@13lood13ath I'm pretty sure he said "The Widow, The Beast" . . .
*SERPENT
He looks like the love child of Kramer & Super Hans.
I would totally invite that bass player to a party.
"Oh no, I had two beers at the bar, thanks.'
Is Heather coming?
This was chock full o nuts. "Hes balding...spiritually", "whenever I listen to bass, I always bring cab fare", "that bass is making me chubby", and all the shimmies
Just catching this skit!! 😂😂😂 That's great!!! K.I.T.H. Forever!
This and my indian drum are my 2 favs from kids in the hall. I used to wet my pants laughing!!❤❤❤
As a bass player, I can relate. The singer and guitar player always got the ladies.
As a bass player, I love this classic clip.
Kevin is just funny :) He is always funny. My favorite is when he was Pastor Dave on 70s Show.
Hi Pastor Dave
Also Seinfeld
Denim vest on Festivus for the rest of us
This is very brilliant
Absurdism beyond Monty Python's wildest dreams.
It's 2021 and I LOVE that striped jumper.
this is amazing
@Certainty Exists 🤣
Oh, Canada!
I love Kevin so much!
KITH is coming back to Netflix in May 2022!
Pure kith genius.
I saw Kevin last night and he did this sketch
There's sadness in that Chord Structure
You rule for uploading this! 😂
What do you call a bass player without a girlfriend? Homeless.
What do you do when you see a bass player drowning? Throw them their amp.
No, no, that's a drummer joke. The bass player doesn't have a girlfriend...
I felt his heartache when he had to let Mr Stevenson go....
Thank you for posting this. Made me laugh out...OUT LOUD.
Brilliant. Show me something like that today.
To most average people, bass players are not necessary; but real musicians know that bass players are absolutely critical to any band.
Cheng Liu White Stripes didn't need one. Doors didn't need one. Metallica didn't need one, but inexplicably have had three.
@@jime6688: The White Stipes definitely has bass players of some sort. I imagine Jack White played the parts in the studio and they probably hired a touring musician when they played live.
Cheng Liu Nope. Any bass you hear is his guitar through a Digitech Whammy Pedal(Seven Nation Army for example). Just him and Meg.
@@jime6688: He is still playing something that is simulating a bass though.
Cheng Liu but it's not a bass.
Now I know what cartoon character he plays
How has Davie504 not commented on this video yet?
You think that bass player is into The Doors?
oh em gee!
That was bizarre and fantastic
History will underrate The Kids in the Hall.
It's humor, like the Packers, will stand the test of time.
history can blow me
Kevin looks eerily close to a muppet in this sketch...
Love them.
that cats got a groovy beat... man.
Is Heather coming?
I had the pear dream again.
We are lost.
Never enjoyed an interpretive dance so much
This is a very hard sketch to explain to a non fan. I made a shirt that says Nobody Likes the Bass Player in honor of this sketch though.
Genius.

Too bad it wasn't on any other platform but Spamazon. Jeff Bezos ain't getting any more of my money, and hasn't for years.
No one’s gonna talk about the man is playing a Hofner? It’s so pretty
I am a bass player and I personally am not a fan of the Hofner 500/1.
Why do I feel like these guys are all giant fans of the band Yes
I know I am 😉
...and the days go by!
I love how the mistake leads into a poetry slam.
I wish Primus was in this sketch
That woulda been golden
I've transcribed a fingertapping version to this using a 12 string fretless bass with hair dryer distortion.
Finally I feel accurately represented
I quote this all the time.
When listening to the bass player always bring cab fare
Kevin Mcdonald is beyond funny.
That moment you realise that Beat poetry is encoded in the flesh of your country. Jane! Get me off this crazy thing!
The merciless ribbing is a small price to pay for making the rest of the band sound competent. 😄
Total classic.
I watched this religiously.....
good to see malcolm gladwell had a previous career as a sketch comic
so good
Kevin's ponytail is so ridiculous.
lol - nothing else about this is though.
Back then it wasn’t all that ridiculous. Well, it was still ridiculous but not as much.
I think it's called a man-bun nowadays, yeh?
Ridiculously awesome……
I can confirm all musicians are obsessed with bass players.
Where can i find tabs for this
The song is either Louie Louie or it’s very close in chord structure
@@randyc1982 there's sadness in that chord structure.
Mozart used to go berserk when some pimply young violinist would demand his tabs.
B, E, F#, E. The turnaround is a hammer-on/off of the notes e-f#-e.

I feel stoned just watching this. I miss being stoned.
Bruce, could you please do a Remembers Stuff about how you learned bass and your experience playing music for the Bass Player sketch on KITH?
